Worlds most liveable cities (Krakow or Warsaw don't even hit the radar screens)

Back on track ; for me , the most liveable city is Warsaw , have you got any doubts ? Nice and friendly people , clean steets and buildings , no ghetto or slum areas , no poverty , many green areas , lots of public space , sport facilities

you have got to be kidding.

Streets are not clean- people dump their garbage where ever they want and their dogs sh*t everywhere.
ghetto, seriously- have you been to praga?
Poverty--have you been to praga?
sports facilities are laughable- they are getting better but they are still few and far between -there is like one ice rink in all of Warsaw- and the one in Promenada doesn't count.

transportation system is a joke. 1 metro line, seriously- this is not a transportation system.
the trams within the city limits are good when they are not stuck in traffic. the city could extend them to the outskirts like lomianki and piaseczno- but of course this makes too much sense.

staying in a country for your summer holiday is not living in a country.

I wouldn't want to live in Toronto either- but it is not a huge village- it is a massive conglomerate of suburbs. I would only live in Toronto if it were in the core- the outskirts are like any typical north American suburb. It has some amazing neighbourhoods but they are really expensive.

On the list is Vancouver. This is the most amazing city in Canada. Pacific ocean and mountains- it is a dream.

you have got to be kidding.

The truth hurts sometimes, but anyone who has spent more than a few weeks in Warsaw will testify to this. It's supposed to be a capital city, but its facilities and culture are way behind that of even certain British regions (and I'm not even including London in this). Things may be different in 30 years time, but for now... forget it! Oh, and I really like Warsaw, I just don't think it's anywhere close to what some people claim it is.

I like Warsaw too- it is a great city and it has achieved a lot in a short amount of time, however, there is no way that Warsaw would ever be considered for that list in the distant future.

Maybe a few years ago when Poland was decidedly cheaper, Kraków would have been right up there but prices have soared and that makes it less attractive

exactly, but then again that is more for tourist. A place to live in has to have several factors to balance, like wages and rent and costs. It's laughable that someone would think any Polish city would fall into the list of liveable cities. Maybe a list for unliveable cities would be more suitable to a country with mass emigration.

me to the loss of confidence necessary for a given position, occupation, or type of activity. Three year statute of limitation, isn't it?

You are just a pathetic man and please don`t comment on my posts as I am not entertained by your opinions.

Teffle

Warsaw is the best city to live in, in the entire world??

how many cities have you lived in by the way, outside of Poland, to make such a bold claim?[/quote]
Besides those two I have lived in Rome for 6 months , but I have visited all major cities in Europe and many cities in Canada and USA , so I guess I have got quite good perspective to make such a claim . I think that a survey can`t measure the level of satisfaction of living standards, when you compare a whole city and its population .

There are a lot of Warsaw inhabitants who are affluent people living in sophisticated houses and having luxurious lives and the rest of Warsaw dwellers live in good living conditions in safe and clean city with opened for general public facilities . But still Warsaw is ranked very far on that scale . How can New York city , stand higher on that scale if the city is congested with huge traffic , has got so much of carbon dioxide poluted air, has high crime rate , huge areas of slums and ghetto districts , low level of public general education , high costs of living .In Warsaw you can go out at night and feel safe , there are no dangerous zones . How come such survey can be like that , for me it is biased and made for some purposes (on demand of sponsors ) . You have to realise that believing in such a scheme you become a victim of brainwashing, nothing else. On the general I think Vienna is an excellent city to live in , very clean and affluent, but Paris is overrated , the same with Rome (huge pollution , you can almost suffocate in the summer). So I don`t believe in surveys like that . And besides Teffle, do I have the right for my own opinion even if it is quite opposite to yours ?

I think the list is pretty accurate. Melbourne is gorgeous. My best friend has been living there for over 12 years- it really is a great place to live. I can attest to Vancouver- this is where I hope to be in the not too distant future. I have also traveled extensively- Warsaw, in my opinion, does not deserve- YET, to be on the list, or even considered. There are too many simple logistical factors that hold it back. Public transportation being important- and Warsaw's is seriously lacking.

So I don`t believe in surveys like that

The Economist's World's Most Liveable Cities 2011

The cities listed are mainly in Canada and Australia, two countries least affected by the the financial crisis, they are both commodities rich, Vienna is a very affluent banking city and also a tax haven for Europe's wealthy.

I would like to see the top 10 cities to survive on a shoestring list, to see how it differs.

what some people claim it is.

Warsaw, claims that nearly 25 percent of the city is covered in beautiful trees, shrubs, and greenery. Can anyone name any other European city that has the same volume of greenery.

Dublin - Friendly, energy, enthusiasm - maybe, but clean it most definitely is not.

I've only been there once, and hated it - full of street drinkers like any Polish city. I can see the attraction, but it's by far the dullest foreign city I've visited. 8 hours was more than enough for me. Apart from the road signs being in kilometres, it felt like a similar-sized UK city to me, rather than a nation's capital.

I've only lived in one of their top 50 cities, but I'm currently planning on living in one of the top 10 ;)

Salford, of all places! lol!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Salford

Some parts of the city, which lies directly west of Manchester, are highly industrialised and densely populated, but around one third of the city consists of rural open space. This is because the western half of the city stretches across an ancient peat bog known as Chat Moss.

I've lived in nine cities in five states (US), two in Japan, and two in Poland. Thankfully, I was only in Warsaw for six weeks before moving to Gdansk. Gdansk won't make that list-ever-but it's been my home for four years and I love it.

I believe Berlin makes the claim that it is the greenest city in Europe. I can believe it- it has loads of trees and greenery.

the city could extend them to the outskirts like lomianki and piaseczno- but of course this makes too much sense.

Who in their right mind would want to live in lomianki and piaseczno, both areas have infestations of mosquitos during the wet summers, large areas are formally bogland, the ones I know who live in Dąbrowa Leśna, drive to metro mlociny and take the metro to Warsaw, there is a plan for a tram from Lomianki to Warsaw in the near future, I would also bet money that the fast train line from Modlin aiport will stop at Lomianki. As for Piaseczno, I would consider it,one of the worst areas in Warsaw.

I believe Berlin makes the claim that it is the greenest city in Europe. I can believe it- it has loads of trees and greenery.

My mistake, capital cities, Sheffield in England is considered to be the greenest city in Europe with 61% greenery.

Berlin is a wonderful city, I enjoy very much.

but I have visited all major cities in Europe

What constitutes a major city IYO? If we were looking at Italy for example I'd say, Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples, Verona, Turin, Genoa and perhaps Palermo. Have you been to all those? The list would be up in the hundreds.

Of course you do, but the dogs on the street can tell you that Warsaw couldn't possibly be anywhere near the worlds best city to live in, whatever your opinion might be.

Hahahabloodyhardyharhar........now,dont get me wrong,I love Warsaw,but............OMFGG................Rude as sin people (unless you know them then the nicest around :) ) that make Paris feel friendly in comparison, dog sh!t everywhere, graffitti everywhere, ghetto....maybe not in the western sense, but, well,Praga is still not Bel Air is it? No poverty, lols, all those rich young lay abouts with nothing better to do than hang out in front of the railway station all day.....yes,many "green areas" ,just fekking try actually stepping on the green bits though !!!

Its touching you love your city, but that aint a healthy version of love,love.......
I'll say one thing for you though....youve not blamed "the Jews" yet for Warsaw not being in the top 10 :)

Its got gorgeous parts even in the midst of its ugly parts ,but, she really must drive around in rose tinted glasses all day.
And dont blame the bloody war either, most European cities got plastered then rebuilt in the brutalist manner......
I doubt even the Polish Tourist board would make some of those claims :)

Warsaw reminds me of Los Angeles. Both have some pretty areas surrounded by miles of ugly areas. Think of an oasis in the desert and you'll get the comparison.

Sheffield in England is considered to be the greenest city in Europe with 61% greenery.

TBH though, most of that "greenery" will be Moss growing on closed factories and smelting plants..............the rest will be the sort usually found in attics lit by halogen lamps ....;)

Canadas not exactly international friendly either.

I completely agree and I live here.

It has the most expensive housing I have ever known. Would not want to live there.

Have you been to all thos

They are not major cities in Europe . Name just 10 most populated cities in Europe and you can fill in my list .

the rest will be the sort usually found in attics lit by halogen lamps ....;)

You can be sometimes funny too.

It has the most expensive housing I have ever known. Would not want to live there.

Very true , 40 square meters flat in downtown costs 415 000 CAD - thats so friendly and liveable , haha for who , may I ask ,families with children buy a house and share it with another family ( like in any third world country ) . Go to any top ten city`s less affluent area and you will be in like a Warsaw Praga district .

Warsaw inhabitants are as friendly as others and even more , but Isthatu , you probably showed no manners while being in Warsaw so you were treated with the same way . If you are a person with problems you will get into troubles anywhere even in heaven .

Bless you Moania, but no, I moved in far classier circles than you could dream of while in Warsaw.
I was the guest of true Polish patriots not money hungry aparatchiks painting false smiles on their faces to win clients or husbands.

Sheffield - England's greenest city
It's a surprising fact but it would be hard to find a city with more open green space than Sheffield.
Despite its urban location almost three-quarters of the city is taken up by natural vegetation and waterways.
More than a third of the city is located in the Peak District National Park - no other city has a National Park within its boundary.

In addition you'll find 150 woodlands and 50 public parks all within Sheffield and it is rumoured that there are 4 mature trees to every person living here!

Only someone who has never travelled, could consider Warsaw the most aesthetically pleasing city in the World, Warsaw by comparison to some cities, leaves much to be desired - the devil you know and all that.

plenty of restaurants

Sorry Monia, have to take you to task on this one, Restaurants in Warsaw apart from those in the Major Hotels ie Marriott, are pretty pathetic, unless your easily pleased by dining at McDonalds or Pizza Hut..also a big draw back is there are no major sporting events in Warsaw. I agree its pretty green and clean.

Who in their right mind would want to live in lomianki and piaseczno, both areas have infestations of mosquitos during the wet summers, large areas are formally bogland, the ones I know who live in Dąbrowa Leśna, drive to metro mlociny and take the metro to Warsaw

loads of people live in Piaseczno and Lomianki- Some of the houses here are massive. I used to live outside of Piaseczno- I couldn't take it after 5 years --we got flooded 2 times and the traffic is a nightmare. So we sold and went east.

There is space between both lanes on Pulawska for tram lines, there is also an existing train track that runs through. For some reason the city or conglomerate of Piaseczno is not focused on that- they just keep building houses and there is no infrastructure to support the people there. But this is much of Warsaw- build as fast as you can, sell and then let the owners worry about plumbing and roads.

On the list is Vancouver. This is the most amazing city in Canada. Pacific ocean and mountains- it is a dream.

It has the most expensive housing I have ever known. Would not want to live there.

It is the most amazing city ever. You are also buying a lifestyle- being able to ski, windsurf, bike all in one city is amazing. Mild winters, not too hot summers--the only thing you have to watch is the bears.

Very true , 40 square meters flat in downtown costs 415 000 CAD - thats so friendly and liveable , haha for who , may I ask ,families with children buy a house and share it with another family ( like in any third world country )

How much does a 40 m2 flat in downtown warsaw cost- mind you, you don't have the view of the ocean or the mountains.

People will buy houses that have a rental suite in it. It is not two families sharing one house. It is one house with an apartment in the basement. When you buy a million dollar home- you often need to suppliment the mortgage payment. I wouldn't say living in a 250 m2 house with a rental suite is like living in a third world country. Not like Poland where a family of four lives in a 35 m2 flat with the mother in law and two dog.

Warsaw was destroyed in WW2 and rebuilt by the Commies... the city is definitely no beauty. Public transport is pretty bad, compared to other cities. The quality of residential property is low(?) to average. Cleanliness? Ever been to Zurich or Geneva? I also miss the advantages of more multicultural cities, like the bigger choice of restaurants and food. Culture is average, since many museum collections were destroyed in the war, and the number of theatres, operas, philharmonic orchestras and so on is only average compared to some other cities. And Warsaw can't score with beautiful surroundings either, unlike cities like Geneva or Vancouver.

I would also bet money that the fast train line from Modlin aiport will stop at Lomianki.

Do you mean that the fast train will pause to let people on and off at Lomianki or that the line will be built from Modlin to Lomianki and the thought will be 'You paupers who don't have a car can just get a bus from there'? Given that Warsaw still hasn't managed to connect the main airport to the city by either tram or train, despite train tracks going almost right past the airport!

Given that Warsaw still hasn't managed to connect the main airport to the city by either tram or train, despite train tracks going almost right past the airport!

exactly. there is no way Warsaw could ever be in the running for the worlds best cities to live in. Public transportation is a joke. Time and time again, developers are able to construct osiedle's or blocks but don't have to worry about infrastructure- such as roads or plumbing. At any point during the day- pulawska to piaseczno is a traffic jam. Same with the road through Lomianki. There also used to be a light rail track that ran from konstancin to warsaw- this is no longer- for some reason.

all modern cities should have some sort of direct line from the airport to the city centre- not Warsaw.

you would think that with all the EU funding Poland got they would be able to fix these problems.

Tricity is connected with a great train that is totally efficient. There is a train that runs hourly from Gdynia to Hel. Warsaw is the capitol and it is a bloody mess.

The street that I live on was just repaved and a bike path was created along with new plants and trees and bus shelters. It looks great. However, people here don't grasp the concept of bike path- so they walk on it and the new bus shelters are being used for places to sit and drink beer.

And with Warsaw, there is a train spur line 200 metres from the door of the terminal!

Not a lot of people know this, but there is actually a train station located underneath Terminal 2, which has been sitting idle for five years.

Isthatu - you with their mediocre comments about the city which do not know, standing in the front row of people who hate everything what is Polish. However your personal campaign against me shows that you are a little man with a big mental problem .

Secondly I have never said Warsaw is the most beautiful, but it is very liveable city and this is my opinion. I also have given you my reasons to back up my opinion.Your negative comments will not change a thing because I live here and know the city very well.

I will not argue with Polish haters at all, it is a waste of my time. For me it is enough to see your nick names to foretell your opinions.

You are not Wielki Pan by any chance if your only choice of resataurants in Warsaw could be fast food outlets.

And finally you Pipa, you rule with your stupidity, I advise you to leave Warsaw to Vancouver and buy a tiny shack for half a million built from some wooden sticks and plywood.

Also , read what I wrote , did I try to compare the Warsaw`s beauty to other cities , no .

Think about the mass destruction of the city and piles of rubbles which were left from the city after the war and the commies who built ugly buildings . You people simply are unfair with your biased comments about Warsaw and your negative comments are just rubish .
