What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland?

If you get caught you pay 40 times the price of the ticket or you have to accompany the policeman to the nearest police station.It is on your own risk.


In Poland you see far less flags than in America where everyone seems eager to proclaim his love for the country.However there are in Poland some king's symbols and other peculiar things to be found with crowns etc and you think about Poles with horses.

exactly we pay even 70 times ticket price and still ppl do it. I was caught 3 times in my life ;)

There are fewer flags here but more than you might think, southern. Many left them up after Smolensk.

Yes,because they estimate that they will get caught in less than 1/40 of times they don't buy the ticket.

Allowing gay pride marches, that was a shock here. I can imagine the mohair berety being renegades and gunning them down ;)

its shcoking that whenever they allow to gay parade they allow either to organise MW parade in the same day in the same city and even on the same streets...

Poland is a country that could spawn many fanatics if the climate was right. I don't see many NS people here in Gliwice but they are in quite a few big cities.

That's not true and we both know it.

I wish some property owner in Poland would take the idea of a "parking lot" seriously. It's not just an empty space to put your car. PAVE IT! I hate getting out of my car and standing knee-deep in a puddle every single time.

The thing that caught me off guard the most was that people actually pay attention to the signals at metered zebra crossings, even at odd hours of the day. Where I come from, the "don't walk" light is just a suggestion; you're free to cross as long as there are no cars.

The thing that bothered me the most was the lack of drinking fountains anywhere at all in public places.

All in all, I'd say neither is exactly earth-shattering, but then again, I did my homework before I decided to move.

That idea never stuck :) You have to take care of yourself :)

It'd be nice if some place other than KFC had a soda fountain. 120 ml isn't enough to let my tongue know it's wet.

Educated, cultured Brits like Poland... unfortunately, the bureaucracy is the worse trait, but other than that, Poland's a lovely country :) the girls are nice too ;)

Heh! though I don't do so often; my honey was rather shocked just this past week when I brought home a "large" drink not even super sized yet.

"That is ALL soda..? you're not going to drink that?"

(That would be, I think, a 900+ ml beverage incl ice displacement)

I could see that as something I'd boggle over.... even for just water I like to have a larger cup

The biggest culture "shock" (BUT in a GOOD way) was the ability to live without an automobile.

Polish drivers.

Dealing with people who always looked for the cheapest option rather than the most efficient ( mainly in the workplace)

Yes. The amount of trouble caused by this is incredible.

2 weird observations........1. I was with my wife for 5 years before we moved to Poland.....I often had to talk to her about this strange thing she did in UK, she would walk straight at people....even the kind of men you just don,t, you can see that they are looking for trouble, many was the time she would bump into people...I worried that she had bad eyesight...she must have had an angel watching over her because we kept out of trouble.....Now I live here in Poland, I know she has no such problems...all Poles do it...! 2. UK Model....public toilets in a big mall.....maybe 10 stalls...... You are using one, somebody comes in, they will go to the other end as far away as is possible..it is the polite thing to do!!!! Polish Model....whichever stall you choose the Polish guy will come to the stall right next to you and treat you to all the noises and rich smells of last evening's dinner and beer.!!! (I don,t think they like to be alone whilst taking a dump!)

Using decent public transport for a reasonable price and drinking vodka neat.

Refrigerated tinned fish. Uncovered displays of food at mouth level on top of perspex deli counters, so people can breathe and cough all over it all day. Beefy guys in sandals and white socks. Not shaking hands across the threshold. Fruit syrop in beer. Dogs chained up their whole lives.
