Lifestyle in Poland - what should we prepare for?

this month, my husband is going to Polish and work there for long time. can anyone tell me some things about the daily Polish life and what we should prepare in advance?

I second smurf's advise, prepare for winter clothes, winter tires on the car, good insulation and heating at home.

he will work in Plejada as a salesman. I am wondering if I should buy him an ipad mini or an iphone as a means of communication when we are apart. at first time, he will need a medium to learn Polish. and is it easy for such a newcomer as him to buy a 3G microsim? and what is the best 3G microsim of a reasonable price?

by the way, what is more common currency between U.S dollar and Euro? I am going to buy one of those for him. thanks!

tell us about yourself. you will get different advices if you your husband is Czech for example and different if he's Indian. Buy him whatever he likes. It's very easy it buy microsim. EUR is more common in Poland that USD. But if the intention is to come with USD or EUR and exchange it to PLN in Poland, then it doesn't matter which one of this 2 he has.

He could use a pay as you go SIM, but it might cost a bit, better if he just has some decent Wifi at home and in his office.....or take a billed SIM with Play/ERA/Orange etc. (Play is the cheapest, but only has good coverage in urban areas).

He will need to have a lived at a 'permanent' address for at least 6 months before he can take a contract with an operator though, maybe if he gets a work mobile as a salesman they can provide him with a data SIM too.

He won't be able to use USD or Euros in Poland, Poland has its own currency, so he will have to change his money. He could set up a bank account with whichever currency he brings. But he should just ask him employer to help out with setting that up.

If your husband is Vietnamese, he should have a visa to legally work here.
Perhaps his employer could help him, if he does not already have one.

Then he will need to get a P.E.S.E.L number.


I recommend Skype, it's free to download onto your computer or smart phone and calls are free between two computers or smart phones with the downloaded software.

There are other cheap ways of contacting each other too.


Just to clarify, Poland has the Polish Zloty.
