Applying for Polish citizenship through marriage.

If you have been married to a Polish citizen for over 3 years you then need prove that you have both lived in Poland as permanent residents for a further 2 years you can apply for Polish citizenship.

There is no need to have a permanent residency permit; however, if applying on the basis of being married to a Polish citizen, one must have been living in Poland for at least two years on a temporary residency permit (or a permanent residency permit). From memory it's in Article 30, section one of the Polish Citizenship Act of 2009.

Seems to me a lot of European countries keep the 5-year rule. Meaning living in the said country for over 5 years. Obviously if you are a EU citizen, you don't need any Polish passport at all.


OK, if this is the case...For a non-EU person to get permission to live in Poland, even if married to a Polish citizen...It is not that obvious.

For example, we have friends...Their daughter is Polish, married to a Mexican. They married in Mexico six years ago, have lived there all the time. he would not easily get permission to live here - at least so I think.

Thank you all the info:-) though it gets confusing alot.lol. we in our fourth year or marriage, i am non-EU, we got married in Cyprus, registered for a Polish Marriage certificate while in Poland after the wedding and we actually have a Polish marriage certificate even though we only visit Poland. Will the Polish marriage certificate make a difference?? :-)

It is very simple: you cannot get a Polish passport without living here for at least two years.

Because I dont know polish we are planning to live and work in english-speaking country. My question is, if after the marriage I will have the right to go and work in different country with her, or I need to stay some period of time in Poland (to get settlement permit)?

Hello everyone.I just got my permanent resident permit in poland which is valid for 10 years.
I'd like to know if it's possible to apply for a Polish citizenship through wojewoda or through the presidency.And what are the requirements for applying for the Polish citizenship,as I am still legally married with a Polish nationals and have a child together that is also a Polish citizen.

I am not a citizen EU, I married in 2008 with a Polish girl, then in 2011 , I moved to Poland, I recived the first card pobytu temporary valid for one year, then the next year (2012) I solicited another card POBYTU and I recived it (valid for 2 years) , however when I was two years in Poland (in December 2013), I begam to tramit the permanent resident card; and in the first week of marz 2014 I recived my permanent resident Card ( valid for 10 years). 1 week leter (14 March, 2014)I started the process for the Polish citizenship (submit all documents)(a lot of documents)

At 15 May 2014, (60 days later) I received a letter saying they had sent to another office my documents ( I believe is the final step), and I am waiting .... some forums said that the goverment give the answers appear 6 months, others in 9 months.... How knows.......?

No, after marriage you cant work in any another EU country. You can live and work only in Poland, only with the Polish citizenship can you work in all EU.

but if she gets a job first ( in another EU country), she can take you as a family, and in this case you have the right to work in that country, but first she must get the contract work

I finished my education and married to polish wife in UK. for job we have to move to UAE.
I know if i would have stayed in UK i can apply for non-EEA spouse visa.
but
not we are going to live in UAE which visa i can apply to travel with her on holidays without appying visit visas everytime.

Hello. I am American still living in the States. I am engaged to a Polish national. He has left to Europe already to put a home and life together for us. He has completed this however it seems the rules for us to marry in Ireland are complicated. Does anyone know if I will be able to stay with him in Ireland if we travel to Poland to marry first? We do not want to relocate to Poland at this time as he is working in Ireland now and has already gotten us a house there. I am able to gain Irish citizenship thru descent but this process can take yp to a year and I have already been lonely and heartbroken without him for months now. What is the fastest way for us to marry and settle permanently in Ireland? I'm grateful for any advice

Hello, I've been researching a lot but am still very confused on how I should go about this. I'm an Argentinean living in the U.S. and my girlfriend is Polish living in Poland. I read that if you marry in Poland and if you are there for two years and married for three years you get Polish citizenship. Would it take five years in total to get citizenship plus however long it takes to do paperwork? And I'm not sure how to go about this, what do I need so that I can go and get married in Poland? What would be the steps I have to take? We want to get married in Poland just we have no clue how to start

No. It doesn't matter how long you are married to her; you have to live in Poland before you can get a Polish passport.

That does ruin the plans of a lot of 3rd worlders trying to make it to Germany and Uk through Poland. I often ponder this....why not check this before getting married?

I've been married to my polish wife for 3 years but we did not actually live in Poland during these 3 years. Is it possible that we move to Poland and live there for the next 2 years then I apply for the polish citizenship? since the laws stats that if you're married to Polish for 3 years + 2 years as a permanent resident in Poland then you can apply for the citizenship?

But please remember 'application for citizenship' is not the same as having the right to a citizenship. They may refuse you on many grounds (they may think this is a marriage of convenience or they may feel that you are going to divorce your wife once you get the citizenship.

Let me just tell you something. I was born in Krakow, of Polish parents and grandparents and it has taken me 13 years to get to the stage of being considered for Polish citizenship. I have not lived in Poland for 50 years. I have not yet had a decision, but I'm very near.

So what chances do you have?
