News / About fifty injured after two trains collide in Poland [73]

So far 15 bodies have been recovered. No more living people in the wreckage, only bodies remain.

Edit:

54 injured and 2 people ok.

There were about 370 people on the two trains.

This is sad and Poland mourns again.

News / Independence Blood Bath on Polish roads over the long weekend. [69]

but my understanding is that the numbers are gradually decreasing-or at least that is what a TVN report has said

Last year: 39 dead 532 injured
This year: 90 dead 652 injured

That's a 130% increase in the number of dead people.

But hey.... apart from pgtx, Poles just don't care.

Except that small amounts of alcohol can actually increase both your sensory processing and reaction time.

Care to provide a credible link (as I did) to back up this wild claim? I won't hold my breath.

No, I don't care. Educating you is not my priority.

So your outragous claim remains exactly that.

The car was a wreck,

Oh! You didn't mention in the first post that you were driving so fast that you completely lost control and wrote your car off on this....."safe bend".... in fact, you suggested the opposite...

not speeding, and I skidded on a safe bend, ........ I just managed to turn the wheels sideways, so I didn't jump over the kerb onto the bus stop full of people.

So it's not me that is sugesting that your are lying, but your own words, that you change and add at will in order to suit your UNBELIEVABLE story.

edit:

nott:
try to avoid suggesting that I am lying.
He believes there was a bus stop but not the sand. Lol.

I think you missed the irony. I was mentioning the mystic bus stop because I didn't believe a word of his fantastical tale.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Well, actually sun shine, as a professional driver with 26 years experience, I'm afraid I do know what I'm talking about.

and I skidded on a safe bend

I good driver would have 'read the road', taken into account the crowd of people at the bus stop, and slowed BEFORE the bend, and therefore not skidded. Besides, there is no such thing as a 'safe bend'. In Britain, where the standard of instruction is much higher, a bend is considered a hazard and you learn to adjust your speed before you reach it.

because some idiot spilled sand on the tarmac and nobody cared to sweep it off.

yet the sand was still there until heavy rain two days later

Do I need to point out the obvious to you? I suppose I had better. You claim you skidded on sand and almost had an accident where you could have ploughed into a crowded bus stop, and that this sand was on the road for two days until rain washed it away. Your only course of action was 'to call those maintenance pricks'. It never occurred to you to clear the sand yourself? I mean you felt so strongly about the situation that you felt the need to report it, yet you did sweet FA over the next few days to prevent any further risk of accidents. Strange that! I wonder if I'm the only one who smells the Bull Sh1t here? Further more, I reckon that on a busy road like that, next to such a crowded bus stop, the volume of traffic would have cleared most of that sand away in two days.

On a 'clear black road' I saw the traffic light some 150 meters ahead, so I slowed down, not being sure if I will get the proper timing. Only the car didn't listen, I slid through on the red, because this particular stretch of the whole 400km was covered with thin ice. Now tell me I should've driven this distance at 20km per hour.

You seem to be drifting away from the point here. We are currently experiencing one of the warmest Novembers on record. It's just after 00.30 and the temperature is +9c. Black ice wasn't a factor in the 90 deaths over the weekend, alcohol was.

As for your comment, if the temperature was 0 or below, as a driver you should be aware of the risk of black ice and you should adjust your driving accordingly. But I guess that's a little beyond your ability.

No need to make things up

Fact: 90 people died in the carnage on Polish roads over the independence weekend which is a 130% increase on the previous year.

Fact: 1880 people were found to be over the limit (and for sure a lot more got away with it).

With out a doubt there is a link. I'm not the one making things up.

Are Poles supposed to be outraged by the number of victims?

Yes. Or more to the point they should be ashamed.

The main reason for the body count is that during the long weekends there's much more Sunday drivers on the badly maintained roads than usual.

You know, in the three years that I've been a member on this forum, I've often read Poles defending the indefensible but that just takes it to a new extreme. I've got news for you, the state of the poorly maintaned roads should only slow drivers down.

What Poland needs is a slight increase in legal alcohol level

Really? That is the most rediculous thing I've ever read on this site.

How drink affects your driving

and this is bad propaganda. Counter-productive

The propaganda and counter production is in your response.

The article doesn't say that 90 people are dead, and 652 injured due to drunk drivers.

Would you like to argue that alchohol wasn't a factor in the 130% increase in deaths from the previous year? If so, can you back your argument up with some data?

It's quite sick really. When I ask Poles about their opinion about this they just shrug and accept it.

Very sad.

The holiday was one day longer this year but the death toll rose by 130%

...but still...except the lovely pgtx... no one seems to care!

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

Merged thread:
Smoking Ban

It may be a surprise to some of you out there, but as of today you can no longer smoke in ANY public place.

I for one feel it will be more pleasant to visit the pub, and I'm delighted to know I can enjoy a meal in a restaurant without some ignorant smoker polluting the air as I eat. But as usually is the case in Poland, they've gone too far. People can't even smoke outside, and that I think is an infringement on smokers' human rights. 7 out of 10 people in Poland smoke so I think it will be impossible to enforce this ridiculous law.

Life / Is it hard for a foreigner to give birth in Poland? [15]

The USA is #37 on the list of infant mortality. You're better off in Poland...

However they still perform barbaric practices here in Poland. They cut the vigina (an episiotomy) as a matter of rutine. When my wife refused the arsehole in charge tried to frighten her by saying the baby is big and that she will tear to her anus and could even die from the infection. At a time when the last thing she needed was stress, the head honch stressed her so much she broke down crying, and then he continued to try and push her into being cut. I had to send him away in a less than polite manner.

As it happened she didn't tear, get an infection or die; as a result her recovery time was shorter than it would have been if she'd 'let' them cut her.

Euan Wallace, an obstetrician at Monash Medical Centre, said it was once the orthodox view that episiotomy was preferable to allowing a vaginal tear because it preserved pelvic floor muscles. But evidence since has challenged that view.

"It's quite clear now that in terms of long-term health it's much better to tear than it is to cut," Professor Wallace said.

This is no place for neutrality!?! :)

I'm neutral because as an English resident it's not my buisness. This is a Polish issue that should be decided by Poles.
