Travel / Hometown / Vacation pictures Poland [201]

but I found the thing that sticks in my memory the most is the people - I thought english people can be friendly, but I now see that we only scratch the surface when it comes to welcoming people

I have to agree with you there. I never felt so welcome in a place as I did while in Poland. I was related to most of the people I'd met but hadn't really had any communication with the majority of them before my trip....yet they welcomed me with open arms and in some ways treated me better then people that I've known back home in the states for years! *lol*

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

When I got back from visting relatives in Poland I got asked all sorts of questions about if my family all slept together in one bed and just the general assumption was made that Poland is a backwards nation with no modern ammenities.

Genealogy / Vintage Photos of Polish ancestors [144]

Yes you are close. My great-grandparents were married sometime between when Aneila arrived in the US in 1911 and 1914 when my grandfather was born. I can't recall the exact date and I am peeking at the forum from work (shhh) so can't look up the exact year.

The village of Niebieszczany....where my great-grandfather was born and many relatives still live. It is small but very beautiful.

Genealogy / Vintage Photos of Polish ancestors [144]

This is a photo of my great-grandparents on their wedding day in the early 1900's. They both emigrated separely from Poland. My great-grandmother came to the states through Austria and so she was registered as Austrian. My grandfather used to tell how people would tease her about being Austrian because it would get her all riled up and get her to start insisting she was Polish.

Food / chef student would like to know about polish food [14]

I'd suggest that you learn some Polish phrases as well as some Polish receipes. Even a basic I'm sorry but I don't understand Polish will go far because it shows that you made a bit of an effort. I'd write some basic phrases and words here but I learned them with an Audio CD so while I can say & understand them I can't write them.....yet.

When I was in Poland I knew only a small handful of Polish phrases and the people I was with knew even less English....but they delighted in teaching me new Polish words once they knew I didn't speak the language but was wanting to learn. It might be a good ice breaker with those family members who don't know English.

Food / Need some Polish dessert recipes [47]

Merged: Looking for the name/receipe of a Polish Plum Dessert

While I was in Poland a cousin served this dessert that had a plum in the center that was surrounded with some sort of dough. It was very good and I was wondering what it was called and if anyone had a receipe for it.

Lacking a recipe would anyone know if there were any Polish bakeries in the Boston, MA or Providence, RI areas that might sell them?
