Law / Unwanted pregnancy in Poland - threats, rights [55]

Even if it were legal then she still wants the baby Doug.

There is nothing draconian about making the father pay - He was suspicious and he had lots of other options - condoms, absitence or getting off at Wschodnia. He knows where babies come from.

You will quite rightly have to pay child support and they can bug you for it even if you leave the country. Abortion was not an option for her as it is illegal here.

Your best bet is to negotiate a reasonable settlement with her- however if you plan on no involvement then the amount of cash you pay would probably have to be higher to allow for extra childcare costs.

Real Estate / Victorian-style house in Poland? [15]

I have a brick place myself - there are plenty such farmhouses available especially in Mazury and Kujawy plus the west of the country. There are also a few Coronation St style terraces in places like Bytom, Chorzow, Zabrze.

To build from scratch would be expensive - my guess at least 30 percent more than a normal place and if it looks eccentric then it will be difficult to sell in the future (a problem with any custom built house).

The most expensive thing for me was finding tiles that match a brick house and then finding a tiler who knows how to do that kind of place - I replaced the roof and it was the best part of 50k zloty and was several months work.

News / New Polish traffic laws [25]

Can go up to 700 zloty plus points or a temporary ban, - but it's almost unheard of for the police to take action.

What is very common however is for pedestrians to be fined for crossing on red lights or in the wrong place, in fact there used to be quite a racket run on tourists by Straz and Policja in big cities, Only yhis morning I drove past some Straz taking the names of some guys who were running to ge their tram.

News / Will Poland tighten border control with Germany? [60]

Why do you assume that we are all leftists ? maybe respect for refugees comes from the way our own Polish families were treated well in Britain and in the US and even in Syria and Persia when they were fleeing from drunk murdering Russians who invaded Poland without provocation.

News / Will Poland tighten border control with Germany? [60]

It is a problem and one which piS are trying to address and the first step is to keep a strong economy by having reasons to stay in Poland - hence the need for open borders to support our growing exports to the EU

You are unlikely to be contributing to the fertility rate any time soon - difficult to meet a nice girl when you spend every night in the basement ranting about Muslims.

News / Will Poland tighten border control with Germany? [60]

Not in Poland - the economic benefits of open borders have benefited all sections of society and disposable incomes have tripled for working class Poles since 2004.

Not that you would know about that, never having set foot here.

A sure sign of idiocy in immigration and borders debates is comparing a complex problem to the locks in your own house on some crappy Moscow commie estate where there is nothing worth stealing apart from yesterday's half finished bottle of vodka and some Moldovan champagne,

Could be because we are afraid of being called Nazis or could be because living here we observe the massive economic benefits of the open borders. Difficult to perceive from Russia where you love your queues and bits of paper that provide steady income for overdressed bureaucrats.

The other 27 countires can observe in real time the UKs success when it reintroduces birder checks after Brexit, then we can decide if it's a good idea.

Language / Interslavic artificial language [35]

Maf - I spent some of my teens in the UK and some in the US - boob tube was one source of confusion- in the UK it means a t shirt with no shoulders, worn with or without a strapless bra and popular in school discos of that era !

Food / Vodka for a Polish Wedding [40]

Bols is another mid level brand you can try. Maybe Zytnia too which would be an old skool choice.

I found a few photos of family making bimber in I think the late 70s - god knows why they recorded the evidence but I guess they were bartering it for other stuff they needed.

Life / Child maintenance / expenses living in Poland [11]

Yes - 300 zloty is the cheapest state run option (which Is normally pretty good)

I also didn't take rent into account in my calculations - probably about 20 zloty per month per square meter if the kids are in their own room.

Life / Child maintenance / expenses living in Poland [11]

It's not excessive - preschool is 300 a month. That leaves 1700 for food, clothes, medicine before any fun activities, if your wife is going to work she probably needs some childcare too.

She might get by on 1500 but below that it would be a real struggle and these are your kids so surely you want them to do something more than just live in the breadline.

The 500 zloty would be irrelevant in the courts eyes. Besides she is doing the hard work in this situation- Poland is not an easy place to be a single mum.

Life / Financial incentives to increase fertility in Poland [9]

Well the way that need for babies has been presented is that someone has to pay the pensions of the ageing population - but if on top of saving for their own pension they have to shell out 300.000 for each kid that is going to be a hard sell to your average Japanese or French tax payer.

I have never met a single person who would have a bigger family for money. Most are grateful for 500+ etc but surely nobody would tot up the lifetime cost and grief of having kids and then work out how much they should be paid for that.

Not convinced about the religious argument - there are significant drops in all countries and one reason might be that people used to have 5 or 6 kids expecting a couple of deaths to Diphtheria or whatever, now that risk is less.

Real Estate / Rough idea on rental prices for Wroclaw, Poland [13]

For that money you will not be able to get a commercial place.

Also no idea about other sectors but if it's retail there is some serious overcapacity in Wroclaw right now and rents are falling as a result. Unless you have experience you are better off keeping it simple and sticking to an apartment

Real Estate / Rough idea on rental prices for Wroclaw, Poland [13]

If it was furnished and in a good location maybe 2100 - you need to pay tax on that and after your costs, vacancy, mgmt fees, repairs etc you will do well to pocket 1300.

Especially watch out for big projects like fixing the roof or parking if the whole building - these can easily wipe out a few months income and the closer you are to the center then the more likely you will be in an older building where those costs are needed.

Law / Court punishment Poland - work for punishment instead of jail [36]

I disagree with that - outside the main cities life is still very hand to mouth for many Poles, and it is not easy to bring up a family on say 4000 zloty netto for two people working, though emigration has reduced there are still many willing to swap that for cleaning hotel rooms or picking fruit

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

No surprise to see you on here praising Putin - of course he also doesn't need to worry about poverty, living as he does in a one billion dollar compound paid for from your taxes.

As for driving well the good news is that you have moved up a few places in the waiting list for that Lada after a few of the guys before you needed amputations from waiting in the frozen bread lines.

Well the Nobels loved guns and oil but now 100 years later the committee is made up of educated Scandinavians - surprisingly they have different opinions than angry old American guys or Russian trolls who are paid to be angry.

As with all of these things why not just get the Kochs or some other rich angry dudes to create your own peace prize - they can give it to Putin, Trump, Netanyahu or whoever. Then all shall have prizes

euronews.com/2017/11/30/poland-among-europe-s-worst-for-smog

Poznan and Wroclaw both have serious smog problems in winter. I don't visit Wroclaw often but last time I went to Poznan in winter there was visible smog on a clear day as you drive in from the highway.

A page of smog stories from the TVP webpage - hardly a mouthpiece of EU propaganda

tvp.info/29085572/smog-nad-polska

Most of us can look out of our windows on a winters day and see that.
