I will always learn some Polish.

But I am usually learning more than once at the same time. In my family everyone speaks Russian, my grandmother is as fluent as a native speaker and even worked as a translator in the soviet union. ( All of them had to learn it at school ). I had Russian friends and always understood one or the other Russian word, while I always had struggles learning French. I still learn much faster than most, but even I need motivation, same as you and other people.

To me, Russian makes more sense.

1. Because I can already read and write Russian, why not using this knowledge to actually learn the language?
2. Russia is spoken in quite a few countries. Russia,Belarus,Kazakhstan,Kyrgyzstan,Tajikistan and in many other countries it is used as a second language like for example Armenia,Mongolia or Estonia. And so far, I can myself visiting countries where Russian is an official or even secondary language rather than visiting African countries where French is spoken a lot ( of course I will visit France, but I've been there a lot and always could use my basic French and some German to communicate ).

3. Because I feel like I have way more connection to Russian speaking folks. I could always find friends along the Russians, while I could mostly find hate along the French ( I know it sounds generalizing, but this was my experience so far ). Besides that, my family says they are pretty sure I have some Russian ancestors more than I have French ancestors. ( but this might not be a reason to learn a language ).

4. Russian has similarities with Polish and I found quite some Poles who claim to speak some Russian.
5.I've always been interested in Russia,Ukraine,Kaz & Belarus. The chance I might even live in a Russian speaking country or even a country that uses Russian as a second language is quite high.

So now I decided to continue my Russian studies. It just seems to be more effective for me, and it definitely is a useful language, especially in times of permanently changing politics and Russia being one of the superpowers. Who knows..maybe all of us have to learn Russian in a couple of months :-)))

Maybe because people always react like this when they see something new? The French and the Brazilian are not very common in Poland, while it is quite a normal thing to come across a Russian, German or Czech guy.

I don't understand why you are claiming a culture is not strong just because it changed over the last 200 years. Of course there are hardly any aspects alive, but only because these so called " aspects " have evolved over time. Besides that, I am sure you would find quite some aspects that are still exactly the same if you would just search for it.

I also don't understand what 'the Frankfurt school' has to do with this, if we are talking about the same school, the school I know, is about finance and management.

In fact, not even most countrymen themselves have a proper idea about their own country. Either because they don't know how to analyse,judge and compare certain things, nor because they have lived in their own country for long enough.

I have left Germany at the age of 20, do you think I have enough of a clue about Germany and it's people? Not really. I can only talk about people I know ( friends & family ) but not about people in general, this would need some advanced analytical skills. This is why I always talk about " PERSONAL EXPERIENCES ".

Johnny reb talks about Polish people like he knows every Pole in Poland. But I think I understand what he is trying to say, however... it's not correct. I don't know where he draws the conclusion about " Polish people being political incorrect " and " British people wanting to control Poles with 'British brilliance ( whatever he means by that ) ".

This guy, Johnny, is obviously bad-mouthing things he hasn't got a clue about.

Absolutely not. Non of what you have said is even close to the real reason they are trying to keep their units down there. Please don't take your knowledge out of talkshows and petrol-station wardens.

Go and see some high-ranked US military members who have been leading operations down there for years over years, you might be able get some proper logic from them. But so far I can't see any of it in your comments.

The US has got a population of 322,369,319 humans. How can you even claim, most of them would be " grossly UNDEReducated " This means you would have to know more than 60 % of all American's to even build an opinion about them, at least when it comes to things like education.

Such claims are just arrogant and stupid. I've lived in Canada, near the U.S border, so I had quite some contact with the yankees. I haven't met many who were " under-educated " most I've met were well informed about history,geography & languages.

A comparison between Polish forces and U.S forces is ridiculous. U.S forces are the most modern military in the world who spend the largest amount of money on military equipment & technology.

Polish army evolved quite nice the last 30 years, but they still wont invest more in to military, like Brits and the French do.

Bank took me a couple of months. So more than a day. They needed tons of proof of residence, and it took quite a while until they could create me a PROPER bank account.

National Insurance number. As far as I know you need your ID, maybe a copy of your birth certificate and some residence details in form of a bill like rent or waterbill or something like this.

It was about 3 years ago, and back then my wife helped me a lot, so I can't remember everything I needed. But if you want to make sure 100%, you could try to contact the British government and ask for what you need. I recommend calling them, since they wont send you more than some auto-mail with some auto-standard text.

Hi.

I don't think Polish is easy, but no language is " easy ". It's only as easy as you make it.
If you have some serious motivations to learn Polish, you will do " easy " learning it. To learn it for your ancestors is a good reason, and it will motivate you.

But don't expect to be fluent in a years time. It might take much longer than expected, especially when you haven't learnt any other language before up to a fluent-base.

But everyone learns in a different speed & way.

I don't think it is true.

I think only uneducated Brits. don't like Poles. Because educated Brits. know that not all Poles are the same.

I've met Poles that were idiots, and I've met Poles that were totally fine and very polite and respectful people.

It's a thing you can't generalize, and people who hate Poles, usually build their opinion on cliches.

I am an " Einwanderer " from Germany. I also experienced a hard time getting a job at the beginning, probably because I did not have much job experience in the first place, and was a bit picky about certain jobs. But I've never felt treated " unfair " by the English folks over here. The government was always extremely helpful and polite, certain job search agencies also were quite helpful. The only negative experiences I experienced in my first job in a restaurants-kitchen which only used people for a couple of months to get some cheap workers in and a German factory which mostly employed Poles ( which by the way treated me like ****, not the English people, the Poles ). But besides from that, I've not experienced any trouble with the Government or laws in the UK.

Yes, it is a different country, and it might not be as much of a " paradise " as people especially from eastern-european countries imagine it as, but it definitely is a country which offers you many opportunities as long as you are willing to work hard for it and pay the price. As every capitalist country I guess !

I am here since about 3 years by now, I am self-employed but mostly work with Austrian,German and American customers based in Austria,Germany or the U.S.

However, maybe I am treated differently because my wife is British? Or because I am German? Or just because I came to the UK having in mind to 100% integrate in to this society? I don't know. But it finally worked out. So far, the only thing that annoys me, is that I am not a British citizen yet, and that the weather is not great :-)

I am a foreigner in the Uk myself, when I moved to the UK 3 years ago. I remember me just flying to the UK & living with my British wife. I remember that I needed a National Insurance number and a British bank account to be able to work. I guess to get those two things, you need a residence in Britain first, which is hard to get without exactly these two things you need anyway. The best thing is, to live with a friend first & just set it as your British location/residence, so you are able to apply for most of the things.

But as far as I am aware, you are a EU citizen, so you only need a National Insurance number and a British bank account.
