Life / What income/assets and worth, will give you a "rich" status in Poland? [22]

Being truly rich and having a "rich status" are two different things imho.
I know just too many 'rich' people driving expensive cars bought on credit and 'owning' flats and houses that they will have to repay for the next 30 years...so well-dressed pauper? :-)

But yes , I guess owning a large house, 1 mln. PLN in savings and not having debts whatsoever makes you considerably rich.

Johnny you will find it hard to meet a Pole under 30 who has never been to McDonalds

You're writing it like it is some kind of "measure of civilisation"

How many McDonalds have you got per square mile? Uuu, so many? It must be a very civililised country ;-)

You forgot about the fact that most villagers have their own houses [no rent] and a piece of land which brings them their own food and/or additional income from selling raw products to markets.

About political correctness in Poland.

This track was played in all major radio stations and on TV back in 2005 and it was completely normal :-)

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

While Poland refuses nuclear energy and keeps right on burning cheap dirty coal.

Actually Poland is a burning black coal which is much cleaner when it comes to gas emisions than brown coal burned in German powerplants. Brown coal produces a large amount of Sulfur Dioxide on top of large amount of CO2.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions

I know that facts are you enemies, Johnny, but please try to make friends with them.

That said, there shouldn't be any CO2 regulations and each country should decide for themselves. This is especially important for developing countries who wants to build their economies on industry which is the only proven way to move from a club of perpetually "developing countries" to"developed countries".

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

The climate change fraud serves 3 main purposes in my opinion:

1 To distract the, so called, public opinion from real political and economic problems. And to divert the energy of a young, energetic people who wants to "rebel" into those safe tracks of an irrelevant struggle.

2 To make some people, like politicians and some "scientists", very rich and famous

3 To hamper the growth of a developing economies by more developed economies. This weapon is used by a wealthier EU countries against fast developing Central Europe [CO2 emissions scheme]

Poor climate. Now it is never going to change because of Poland blocking it. Mean, mean Poland. Shame on you ;-)

I'm sorry but there's no serious discussion about "climate change". It's like discussing with those who believe that the Earth is flat.

"Climate change" is a scam bigger than Ponzi scheme.

In case of "climate change" only the money is real.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

why trust universal free healthcare

There's no such thing as "free" healthcare just like there's no such thing as "free lunch" or a "government money". Taxpayers are paying for all of this at the end of the day.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

Iwonka, I think the best way to verify the teachers is to let them be evaluated by parents (and their wallets) of the school children. Nobody else cares as much about the future of their children as their parents. Why should we trust some bureaucrats from MEN instead?

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

Teachers, like any other groups, should be evaluated by free market. Do we have "national" or "public" restaurants or grocery stores? No. Yet, the quality of the food is satisfactory, and the more you're willing to pay for a restaurant - the better the service.

Once the restaurant lose it's reputation with clients it goes bankrupt and the competitors takes over and the system works well.

And eating is one of the most basic human needs, so why would we make an exception for an education?

You must be a humanist then :-) Nothing wrong with that. Society needs them too, maybe not in a such vast numbers.

And thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge about IT with me. I'll take your advice and downgrade myself to junior dev from now on and I'll ask my "boss" to pay me 1/3 of what I'm making now :-)

Now now, do stop telling fibs. It actually does very poorly compared to public universities.

In terms of what? Out of all of my high schools friends who went to public Uni's even as famous as UW or WSH that I'm still in touch with I've got the best paying job and the most in demand skills :-)

Public Uni's may be best place for "humanists" or some future unemployed sociology adepts yet for IT technologies you go to private sector

@Iwonka, I can assure you that Polish-Japanese Academy of Information is not one of them :-)

It scores good results when compared to public schools, even the most famous, and heavily subsidized, ones.

So in this case you don't "pay to pass" (which is meaningless because the job market will quickly verify your skills) but for well equipped IT classes and courses crafted for proving student with useful skills and not just teoretical knowledge which happens very often in public schools .

In the US the top Uni's are private and I hope that we will achieve the same results in Poland.

Who then determines whether or not a teacher is "great" or "average", Spike?

A parents of school children would decide who is great or not so great voting with their wallets.

That's been suggested before and dismissed as unworkable.

That worked for the most part of the history of Western civilisation.

I myself studied in private Uni (worked part-time and paid for it myself). That's to that I don't have to strike and hold school children as hostage because I got paid for my skills by satisfied customers on a free market.

In the meanwhile there's no money for teachers, nurses or the disabled.

I believe that's not the issue in private shools where teachers get paid according to their skills and their results. So instead of looking for "governement" money for pay raises for tachers en masse we should change the education system.

Parents of a school children should vote with their money. This way great teacher would make great money, average teachers would make average money and bad teachers would have to re-train or upskill or lose their job.

How about giving 500+ to any salary?

Kaprys, much better idea would be to not deducting those 500PLN from salary in taxes in the first place.

It's a huge waste of money and resources to first take it away from citizens, then run it through beaurocratic machinery, and then give it away as "government money". Each 500+ costs us 600+.

Government doesn't make any money. It is our money and they only distributing it as they wish.

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

Women in the workforce is hardly news

This kind of [gender] diversity has been naturally and effectively achieved in Poland a long time ago. We have a very smart women in Poland and they've achieved their position thanks to their skills and hard work not socialist "positive" discrimination programs.

"Poland is leading the way with the number of women who hold managerial jobs in the EU, second only to Latvia."

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

however as in most places there there are department managers who recruit people they feel most comfortable with

How dare those blood-sucking capitalists employ who they want and feel the most comfortable with? :-)

How come they are not ashamed to employ those who are the most suitable for the position instead of, first and foremost, taking into account affirmative actions [which also goes by the name of a "positive" discrimination] which are completely incompatible with Polish socio-economic reality?

There's no problem with diversity/minorities in Poland? Then we should create the problem first and then solve it in a way that will create even more problems! The good 'ol socialist way :-)

@Iwonka, When it comes to sex and age diversity I think we don't have problem with that in Poland.

Unless we take into account pseudo-science which defines gender as fluid and non-binary :-P

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

@Iwonka, I have nothing against immigrants from other EU countries and from countries with similar cultural and religious background.

I'm against making Poland some failed 'multikulti' experiment playground which I've witnessed in the UK and which we all are witnessing in Western EU.

When it comes to Indians as long as they come to work on temporary work visas, like most of the Ukrainians right now, I'm fine with that.

Anyway, once Konfederacja Korwin+Braun+Narodowcy get into Polish parliament they will regulate those matters and they will be much more strict than PiS is (or ever was). They've already have 5 MEP in Polish parliament and they're growing in popularity.

Do the international companies all of a sudden forego diversity tactics

When there's no diversity diversity tactics are impossible, right? And they are not in the position to dictate rules to Polish government nor to the Polish nation. They can only operate within Polish law.

diversity is key or needed in these companies to make them function more effectively

In that case they wouldn't invest in Poland, yet they do. In fact Poland is a top FDI [foreign direct investment] destination in Europe*.

History / Poland and Israel getting back on the right foot...maybe [132]

"Polish" property was doubtless owned in part by Jewish families and so we're back to square one in terms of the entire question of reparations!

The matter is more complicated than that.

First of all, in pre-war Poland Polish Jews very often bought real estate on credit in Polish banks, like the biggest bank in Poland: PKO Bank Polski. Most of that credit was never paid back to National Bank of Poland [PKO] when WWII broke out.

So the price of unpaid credit should be deducted from the sum of a final reparation.

Furthermore, almost all real estate in Warsaw (and to lesser extend in other big cities of Poland) was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt by Poles after war.

This should also be deducted from the sum of the final reparation.

In many cases the sum of deductions would exceed the value of a lost property.

And obviously I'm only talking about rightful claimants, that is those rightful claimants with all the proper documents and not some NGO's like World Jewish Congress with absolutely no rights to claim any reparations from Poland.

What about the property of ethnic Germans who decided to become Polish citizens after WW1?

Most of those ethnic Germans have quickly decided to become Volksdeutsche once Hitler took power in Germany and especially later on during the occupation of Poland.

Poland is not against giving back lost property to its rightful owners. Poland is against giving it away on baseless claims from some non-governmental organisations such as World Jewish Congress.

So to make it clear:

1 Pre-war Jews were citizens of Poland so any property they had became the property of the state unless they had living relatives.
2 Those living relatives of those who died during WWII can seek compensation in Polish courts.

@delphiandomine, knowing you I wouldn't be surprised it if was like in this old Russian joke from radio Yerevan:

It didn't happen in Wroclaw but in Poznan, the man wasn't Russian but Scottish, and he didn't get beating for nothing but for public indecency :-)
