News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

In June more than 600,000 European fans flooded Polish stadiums and almost 2.5 million foreigners crammed into sweaty fan zones across Poland

What a load of rubbish!! 2.5million foreigners my arse!.... why do you paste this rubbish? So 1.9 million people came to Poland to watch the football on a big screen? tripe!!

There was 675,600 maximum tickets available for the games in Poland. Say 100,000 to sponsors leaves 575,600 in total for the public. So lets say that 50% went to Poles that would leave around 330,000 tickets for tourists. Some of those bought 3 tickets so probably around 140-150 different foreigners at most attended the games.

So 150,000 different foreigners (EUROPEAN FANS) watching the matches out of 2,500,000!

Wait for it!!!! 6 people in every hundred who came to Poland actually watched a game in the stadium? 6%!

Thats about 12 people on every flight that came into Poland?

Did you visit a fanzone...the one in Gdansk would have held about 20,000 tops! what a load of RUBBISH! the one in gdynia was around a fountain and probably held 1,000!!

Peter stop pasting this crap!

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

A degree is completely different to O levels or GCSE's, that was my point

And the calibre of students enrolling in degrees now compared to 30 years ago is a lot less. Labour 50% of students in higher education paid to the idea that degrees were for the educated elite. Most degrees now arn't worth the paper that they are printed on (general studies? media studies? David Beckham studies!!! ffs).

I still stand by the fact that experience counts for more then education.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Mouse_degrees

In fact an awful lot of people have done really well without one.

dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-1301921/Weve-gone-degree-Why-university-longer-passport-success.html

Apart from jobs where degree's are needed in order to get a qualification to practice then degrees on a whole offer nothing to the prospective employee that a good amount of hands on experience or a good practical college course does. Trust me... I employ people.

It's about time it situation reverted back to decent degrees for the brightest of students and the rest of the money saved to create decent work-based training for the rest.

Silly remark.

Really? 1986 'O' levels not an ounce of 'coursework' or 'multiple choice answers'. Exams have been dumbed down so much in the last 30 years. Makes the teacher/lecturers (labour voters) look good. To me a GCSE is nothing... i did 'o' level, 16+ and GCSE in Maths (all in one summer in 1986) and the only one i failed was the 'o' level.

They are educated to the same level, so experience would count more. We are talking the about between GCSE and degree level, which is a massive difference

Ah-ha... the problem is that since 1987 the whole of education has been dumbed down by successive UK governments and employers know this. A good 'o'

level from 1986 is probably as hard to come by as a first degree nowadays!

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Polish hotels rake in high profits from Euro 2012 fans

No Sh@t sherlock! We'll then that's 20 nights occupancy levels that are higher this year. What about the other 345 days!... what a waste of an article. Maybe the odd hotel in Gdansk was charging over 800zl per night. I can imagine alot of hotels outside of the centre of Gdansk were empty! Gdynia was dead.

The paper quoted the latest forecast by the European Commission, which predicts the Polish economy will grow 2.7% this year, the fastest rate in the EU.quote

The great EU! what a success story!

Maybe there's a reason that youth unemployment is so high. Companies won't employ new graduates with over the top expectations and rubbish qualifications. Experience always wins out. p.s. if there is a 50 year old with 5 o levels and a 25 year old with 12 gcse 'a' plus's i know who'd i take on.

Not true. All depends on the level of the position. Mostly - employers look at education (relevant) + experience.

I can't think of any industry where employees looking for an employee would overlook somebody with experience for somebody with a better education. Especially nowadays when most degrees arn't worth the paper that they're written on.. Unless the employer is looking to cut costs!

Not true at all. Employers will look at experience before education. If i'm employing somebody i will read experience, then achievements and then education. Stricly in that order

Finally, comething that me and Peterweg agree on. Although the word stupid is a bit stong. No amount of education can provide university educated idiot with commonsense. Take a look at the 'blair babes' for a idea of how university fails.

peterweg: There is no place in the world for the uneducated - except for minimum wage work slaves.

So then Peter. As an economist how does it work when everybody is well educated?

So you are a British citizen not an EU citizen.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I am english citizen because of where i was born and a citizen of the street in that town.
i am a british citizen because england is a member of the island of great britain...
I am a Uk citizen because britain and northern ireland make up the uk
I am a european citizen because the uk is a member state of the eu.

My passport is issued by a member state of the EU... it therefore is an EU passport. To somebody from outside of the EU a passport to enter and work in any EU state should they get one.

As a member of the EU I can be afforded protection of another EU member states consulate should i need it outside of the EU.

I hope that clears it up for you.

If you want to be the funny guy by splitting hairs go and do it with somebody of a lower intelligence.

Poland overlooks US citizenship:)One dont have to giveup US citizenship!

Polish law does not deal with the issue of dual citizenship. Therefore Poland will view a dual citizen as if he or she was solely Polish. Thus, Poland does not recognize the foreign citizenship of its nationals when they are on Polish soil.

Grand dad = Born in Ireland

Get an Irish passport. If your grandad was irish.

Q. What is Citizenship by Descent?
A. A person whose father or mother was an Irish citizen at the time of his/her birth is automatically an Irish citizen. A person whose grandfather or grandmother was born in Ireland may become an Irish citizen by registering in the Foreign Births Register at an Irish Embassy or Consular Office or at the Department of Foreign Affairs. A person whose great-grandfather or great-grandmother was born in Ireland may register for Irish citizenship provided that their parents had registered in the Foreign Births Register at the time of the person’s birth

You'll find the Irish more accomodating then the Poles. Once you have your Irish passport then you can travel/work anywhere in the EU.

So only well educated people should have houses? Great thinking!! So you are trying to upgrade your house and need to sell your apartment but the only people wanting to buy are 'not very well educated'.... do you a) sell to them and move on, or b) stay were you are as 'uneducated' people shouldn't buy houses!!!!

You Poles...23 years of democracy and still can't grasp it!!!

Stick to Communism!

You'd be suprised at how many billionaires and captains of industry never went to University and how many useless people did!. Education doesn't supply you with common sense.

No doubt gdyniaboy and Fuzzywickets will be along in a second to tell us how everyone should be living in huge mansions despite doing an unskilled job.

That's not what i've been saying. All i say it that everybody has to have the chance to get onto the property ladder. You've still got no idea of chains!

Then work harder. Not rocket science.

Delph you are an idiot! Everybody can't be as wealthy as each other.

Poland isn't a communist country anymore ;) It's called democracy... some people earn less then others... you'd soon be sick if the beidronki Girls were earning the same as the Bankers.

News / Bieganski, the Brute Polak and Debbie Schlussel (about the Polonia) [19]

Further: the truth is much more complex than "Poland is really, really great and her enemies are really, really bad." Only sad old chauvinists, marginalized from, and utterly inconsequential to the mainstream of society, will embrace that message.

It's funny that it's not only me that thinks of the average Pole as the above. No smoke without fire!

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Given that the latest year for which figures are available - 2009 - the net contribution by the UK was a mere EUR 1.9 billion - it would seem somewhat impossible for the Poles to take 8 billion.

So nett contribution of 1.9b euro...the UK government just gave the eu 1.5billion pounds yesterday!!! ... Poland in 2009 took nearly 7 and the figure has risen since then.

The British government has only take more from the EU that it gave once...in 1975. Which was coincidentally the year of the EU referendum. The EU costs the UK around 118 billion each year (including trade deficit) the EU couldn't exist without the UK... it could without Poland!

telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/6198708/EU-costs-Britain-118bn-a-year.html

Let me know your source for the UK begging to joining the EU... because by my recollection it wasn't called the EU back then (of course a Pole wouldn't know this) It was called the 'common market'.. Entry was vetoed by the French in 1962 and 1967 but on the 3rd occasion the UK joined. In fact the UK refused entry at the inception of the common market but changed it's mind after the Suez conflict. However, the French vetoed the UK member ship as it said that the UK had too close ties with the US and would be detrimental. It was French anti-Americanism (scared of US food imports hampering French production - they still hang on the the CAP today) that stopped the UK joining and nothing else.

So before you spout off about UK history get your facts straight or read it from a non polish source!!

1.9 billion Euros!!! you make me laugh! Ever considered a role in comedy?

Indeed. And plenty of tax money goes to subsidise those living in houses, too. None of that nonsense in Poland.

That's because plenty of UK tax payers money is subsidising Poles!! How many Polish kids living in Poland are supported by the UK tax payer? (50,000??) As usuall the British Tax payer pays for all of the scum of the earth!
