Life / Why do majority of Polish are afraid to admit their nationality? [28]

After few more encounters like this I've realized it's very common.

Well it's true. I met a guy in Mikolajki at a live music concert and he said he was from England. We started talking and it was pretty obvious after a couple of sentences that he wasn't. He thought I was Polish at first and just try to speak English. When I told him I was an American, he went to the bathroom and never came back, lol. I saw him later that night, drunk and speaking fluent Polish with his friends at the bar.

USA, Canada / Are you a US citizen? Test for Americans. [67]

I'm not going to argue with you enkidu. I just told you how we use those words here.
Another choice would be aggressive. Just come to the US and ask someone why he's so offensive (lol) and I'm sure you'll get the right answer.

It is intended to be somehow offensive?

offensive? Do you mean if it stinks? We say offensive when we mean that something doesn't smell good, otherwise it's defensive.

UK, Ireland / No job unless you're Polish [201]

British people who live in Poland and expect anyone and everyone they come into contact with in Poland to speak English and often get miffed when people don't or won't

I'm sure it has nothing to do with discrimination but with what I've mentioned above, English language is a world language and wherever you go, you'll find people who can speak it. To learn Polish is rather a kind of showing respect to Polish people while in Poland or while having a Polish partner, otherwise where else do you need this language? Then again obviously it's smart to learn as many languages as possible but like I said above, it's not a necessity if you know English.

UK, Ireland / No job unless you're Polish [201]

The British public gets an inkling of what life is like for billions of people around the world who are discriminated against because they don't know some language well enough

It sounds like you're pretty bitter but don't forget that it's a matter of a language popularity here. English is simply more popular than any other language (unless you count Chinese due to the Chinese population).

But, even if it weren't it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I guess, you're not English then.

it's supply and demand

it's just bad when your own people are being treated like that in your own country.

No job unless you're Polish

if it happened in Poland, I would kind of understand it but in UK? It sounds like a bad joke.
I wonder if something like this ever happened in the US too.

Haha....please.

It's so obvious that this is a catch and he believes that Americans are too stupid to realize that. This is what happens when people believe word of mouth.

Ignore Beelzebub

why, because he's right about you not being an American, lol
Well, face it, you're not and the "Americans" you know are probably Polish expats just like you.

Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines

A man, a husband and a soldier died, a very sad and a tragic story. I only wonder if it's relevant for you guys only because of his last name which is accidentally Polish.

UK, Ireland / Which country is more corrupt - Poland or the UK? [35]

But the figures involved in Britain are much, much bigger

Not the figures but most likely it's more public over there. This is the problem in our western world, our medias are spreading it all over the world while in Poland many things are still being swept under the carpet.

Law / The 'Secret' of Poland's Economic Success [83]

They can only keep up the charade for so long.

I agree with you. At the latest when the cash quits flowing from the EU the way it does at the moment, the problems will appear, slowly but surely.

Travel / Do I need a visa to visit Poland for 6 weeks? [20]

I am excited to go.

I wonder if you'll be excited to come back like I was after staying in Poland for a while :-). Then again I believe, the circumstances are different.

I don't think you can carry a grandma across as proof of residence ;)

I can, lol Since my grandpa passed away back in 1986, she's back to Germany and lives in Bremen.

Love / How to convince English boyfriend to learn Polish? [39]

I know that in the past he was dating Spanish girl and learnt Spanish so I cannot understand why he could not learn just few basic words in Polish.

It's good to learn as many languages as you can however you have to admit that Spanish is a world language and is pretty useful all over the world while Polish is not.

Your boyfriend however, should learn at least a little bit of Polish, just enough to show you some respect and feelings.

Love / How to convince English boyfriend to learn Polish? [39]

If i could make an effort to learn your language fluently then why can't you?

...why can't you?... was your question

where did i say that i expect that sort of thing?

see above

Maybe I misunderstood your intentions but your first comment above made me answer
like I did
"Don't get me wrong but Polish is not exactly a world language."
