History / Insoluble Judaeo-Polish imbroglio? [44]

Shame he appointed a Minister of Education so tainted and malicious that the Israeli gov't refused to deal with him.

Poles hated him too. We have something to bond over, at least.

History / Insoluble Judaeo-Polish imbroglio? [44]

I propose to solve this matter in the same way we've solved the problem of Polish-Ukrainian relations: by not talking about it (with the exception of nationalists, of course)

News / Pole-basher Gross up to old tricks [284]

Since we're discussing Gross' credibility, I'd just like to remind you all that no matter how respected he may be as a historian, there are other historians who are respected just as much as he is (Gunnar S. Paulsson, for one) and yet their view about wartime Polish-Jewish relations is completely opposite to that of Gross. Whose word should we accept as the truth, then?

In my opinion, it might be due to the fact that in every historical books there's only about 10% of facts and the rest is pure speculation and private views on the matter.

Poor people robbing the dead is not so shocking in wartime...

Just in wartime? Call me amoral but I think it's a terrible waste to just dump dead person's belongings in their grave to rot with the corpse. I just don't get what is so special and sacred about it. If my family is stupid enough to do that to my stuff, I'll be happy if some poor fvck diggs it all up one day.

Hmph. Whatever truth is or isn't in his books, the guy sure has some unhealthy obsession with writing books about Those Evil Polacks.

Besides, what's wrong with impoverished people searching for dead people's valuables? It's not like they need them anymore. If I knew there's a treasure hidden in the forest somewhere near me, I'd be there with a metal detector in an instant.

Language / How can i teach my child Polish language? (I'm Russian, my wife is Polish) [35]

I think I can see what the problem is - your wife is too ambitious. She's trying to teach your daughter four languages at the same time. It's too much for a five year old, but your wife sounds so bossy that I'm not sure if she will listen if you tell her that. I'd advise you to search professional help - tell your wife that perhaps she should speak to a pediatrician or a psychologist about how many languages she can teach to your daughter and how she should do this. She will surely to listen to a professional.

Language / How can i teach my child Polish language? (I'm Russian, my wife is Polish) [35]

I speak English to my daughter all the time. I used to speak Russian to her when she was younger but my wife got irritated that she picked up on Russian better than Polish.

You shouldn't let her treat you like this. This is your heritage and your daughter's as well, you have every right to teach it to her and your wife should respect this. Tell your wife she should just talk to her daughter more often if she wants her to pick up Polish better.

Language / How can i teach my child Polish language? (I'm Russian, my wife is Polish) [35]

I know several kids with Polish mother and non-Polish father and it's usually enough for the mother to speak to them in Polish to learn the language. Even if she seems to be picking up Russian easier, after many years of hearing her mother speak Polish she will definitely become fluent. Just one thing - your wife should speak to your daughter in Polish ALL THE TIME, not just teach her some phrases from time to time. She will never achieve the same fluency in a language from programs desiganted for foreigners as with being accustomed to hearing it.

Genealogy / Do you think all Slavs are white? [178]

don't really have light skin, eyes and hair

*gasp* Neither do I! Clearly, I'm one of the many non-white Poles, then.

Love / What are the most popular ethnicities for Polish women [90]

Yes,that you can always dump them is the most important.

My mother has been through two unhappy marriages, don't blame me for being cautious.

I would like to ask vetala which of the tanned nationalities are most popular among Polki.

Depends on personal preference, I think. But any foreigner's a catch.

It may simply show that he is hungry.

He could well be hungry in his own country. Unless he's a refugee, one needs courage and determination to move abroad.

Love / What are the most popular ethnicities for Polish women [90]

The fact that the man has left his country and came to another shows that he's curious about the world, active and adventurous. Dating a Pole isn't a thrill, I could pick a random person in the crowd and I know right away that he's Catholic, he likes football, watches "Świat według Kiepskich", and doesn't really go out unless it's to drink beer/vodka with friends.

The next reason is that everybody loves challenges - I've had lots of Polish men show interest in me, so I won't be satisfied with settling with the first random man when I know that I can do better. Foreigners, on the other hand, are so popular with other girls that I'd need to try very hard to win their favour. The satisfation from dating them is bigger and if it doesn't work out, I can always dump them.

I also know people who marry foreigners because it gives them perspectives - they can move to another country, get a citizenship there. If a marriage with a Pole doesn't work out, most of the time she will be stuck in the same city/town as him, they'd have the same friends so she can't hang out with these people anymore without having to look at him, etc. If a marriage with a foreigner doesn't work out she can always go back to Poland and never see him again, or stay in that country and have bigger perspectives.

Plus, tan skin is fvcking hot :)

History / Polish president Mościcki and Hermann Göring hunting together in 1938 [76]

Interesting find:

Yeah, I've read this whole site. I especially liked how almost everytime the word "Poland" appears, it's preceded by "antisemitic". I didn't see an other mentioned countries treated in the same way so I assume it must be some collocation which I'm not familiar with :)

sorry but hardly hints at hostility

It does. Whatever was Poland's and Germany's policy towards Jews, it doesn't change the fact that a country isn't supposed to dump 17.000 people at another's border without their consent. It's not a very friendly thing to do.

Hitler treated Poland as a friendly country in 1938

Not so much. In October 1938 Germany expelled 17.000 Polish Jews and dumped them at the Polish border without consulting the Polish government. Poland first refused to take them in and then threatened to expel 17.000 Germans. This does hint at mutual hostilities.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

Mailboxes on the side of the roads and nobody steals the mail!!!

Nothing surprising. I live in an apartment block and we have mailboxes right next to one another and nobody steals the mail either.

never lock the house.

Ok, that's weird.

Nobody fences in yards!!!

And that just plain uncomfortable. I wouldn't want random passersby to gape at me and my family relaxing at our own backyard. I guess Poles just value their privacy more than Americans do.

My horses sleep outside at night!!!!

What if it rains?

Cars have air-conditioning!!!

You mean there exist cars that don't? THAT is a shock to me.

He'll freak out when he sees carpets and bathrooms in a church!!!!

I would too.

Life / Are Poles bigots and xenophobes? [205]

English-language textbooks

At least we'd be able to read it. How about we send you a Polish-language textbook? And ours will have a passage on Darwin and the theory of evolution, I've heard that America is in a need of those.

Life / Are Poles bigots and xenophobes? [205]

Dear God... A person from Texas of all places accuses Poles of being xenophobes by pointing out to examples which are happening world-wide and there are actually people who agree with her... I'm laughing my ass off right now. How's Tea Party and Westboro Baptist Church, by the way? Well? Great!

Life / What makes a "real" Pole? [33]

The problem with Polish Americans is that they do many things differently than we do in Poland yet they claim to experts on Poland. Sometimes, they say complete bullshit and since they called themselves Polish then everyone will take their words at a face value. So, if they say "I'm Polish and we call our grandma 'busha'" everyone will think "They're Polish so they must be right" even though it's completely different over here. It's even worse if they say something racist or stupid, then they give all of us a bad impression.

...being 1/16 (at least) German is a must....

Uff, I'm glad I pass this requirement!

Genealogy / Fabianowicz name [5]

Don't look at the ending because about 1/4 of all Polish surnames have it, so it doesn't matter where it originated from 800 years ago. I have to agree with Delphiandomine here, there are no pure blooded Poles, everyone is part-something. The spelling, however, is definitely Polish, I don't think there exists any other language with 'cz'.

History / Maus by Vladek Spiegelman - animals to represent Poles? [68]

The sad thing is that so many Poles seem to think that their nation is better than every other nation on the planet and so no Poles can possibly have helped with the Holocaust!

Well, we're the only ones who are collectively punished for those 'some people' and treated as a symbol of antisemitism and collaboration.

History / Maus by Vladek Spiegelman - animals to represent Poles? [68]

I don't believe that his choice to portray Poles as pigs was made in good faith. In Polish culture comparing someone to a pig is offensive, Jews hold pigs in even lower regards. Don't tell me Spiegelman wasn't aware of that. Plus, he grew up in France and, as I've noticed, between firebombing attacks on synagogues the Franch love to make a stop to discuss Polish antisemitism. He didn't even bother to get the names right ("Richieu", really?)

News / Is Poland headed for a civil war? [30]

What kind of circles do you have to walk in to find hungry people in Poland?

Students ;)

I find it really strange that the guy claimed to have been trying to kill Kaczyński, yet he travelled to £ódź in order to kill him, even though everyone knows that Kaczyński is living in Warsaw. If it were anyone else, I would be suspecting that the whole incident was staged in order to blame PO, but Kaczyński isn't the sort of guy who would have random people murdered just to make Tusk look bad.
