Study / Cost of Polish lessons, courses (private) [34]

skype internet connection.
£12.50 for 60, £17.50 for 90 minutes, one to one.

Material e-mailed as pdf files to be printed or listened to/mp3.

Excellent method for people living outside Poland.

IKO is a Warsaw based language school that gets good feedback.

Life / Is it me or do any guys in Poland not have shaved heads? [113]

Comb overs......................!
Only the most confident men dare to stray into the 'comb over'.
Julius Caesar first made this style fashionably iconic (1st century B.C) and it's never gone out of style.

SHAVED HEADS ARE EASY!
That's the point.
Straight out of bed, out of shower, after sharing a long car ride with 6 other people in a very small car...............no fuss, no bother.

You can even attend to your own hairdressing needs with an inexpensive set of clippers.
In fact all 7 in a Fiat Uno can share the clippers and save even more money.

Language / Pimsleur v Rosetta stone [27]

pimseurs is a good aid but useless if your using it as a primary method.
rosetta stone, again, can help but it's essentially deductive logic, not language theory or anything that leads to a person being able to compose their own dialogues.

both are available as free downloads.

History / Battle of Grunwald 1410 The biggest medieval battle. Germans smashed. [174]

According to Giles Milton's 'Samurai William' The battles of the Japanese in the 16th and 17th Centuries eclipsed European ones in scale of amount of fighters involved.

I'm hoping to make it to the 600th anniversary celebrations of Grunwald in 2010.

To Germans, west of Europe gave loyalty, to Slavs - only oblivion

UK and France, 1939, declared war on Germany for attacking Poland (Slavs).
Post war politics was about ideology (communism/capitalism) not racial matters.

So what are you saying?

History / Battle of Grunwald 1410 The biggest medieval battle. Germans smashed. [174]

It amazes me when I witness history repeating itself in current events.

Example.
When Princess Diana died and the Royal Family kept a 'dignified silence'.
This was very similar to how the population of Ancient Rome reacted towards their Royal Families 'dignified silence' over the death of Germanicus...2000 years ago!

I love history. Especially ancient to, around, 1700.

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

I LOVE THE POLES being in my country and it makes me sad when I read angry guys who have decided on the age old strategy of 'blame the minority'.

The fact is the average Pole has 4 years more education/training than a Brit of similar age.
They have a better attitude to work.
They may not feel like the life of the party EVERY DAY but they usually do not turn into obnoxious, shouting thugs when they meet disagreement. They are mature enough to accept problems and socially motivated to not ruin the atmosphere for everyone in the same enviroment.

Why come onto this forum if your only interest in Poland and the Poles is to scapegoat them for all the problems that greedy businessmen and corrupt politicians have caused you?

Nice words. Are you sure you are not in love with some pretty Polish blond currently? :))

I've always had great respect for the Poles....
The fact that many Polish women are gorgeous, funny and intelligent is not the point.

Love / Nigerian Girls and Polish Guys [43]

OK it is tragic but we have lost the actual subject.

He had a Polish name but was raised in America.

How would a man born and raised in Poland feel about falling for a black girl?
How would his friends, family, neighbours view the relationship?

I witnessed a few incidents of racism in my 3 weeks in Krakow but I'd put that down to excess drink.

Love / Nigerian Girls and Polish Guys [43]

I'm taking some knocks here for asking a simple question but, unfortunately, Poles have a reputation for being less politically correct than Western Europeans.

They are percieved as being about 25 years behind. Throwing banana's at black footballers. Black face paint and curly wigs for easy laughs.

AGAIN. THE MAN IN THE STORY WAS BORN AND RAISED IN AMERICA. HE WAS NOT POLISH!

Love / Nigerian Girls and Polish Guys [43]

I don't understand this.
gtd and myself are simply saying what we have seen or heard from Poles.
No one is calling every Pole racist. But it is a fact that racism is more open here than in more western nations.

Language / Chodzic versus Isc. When and why? [18]

When should I use versions of the verb Chodzić and when should I use Iść?

Examples, exceptions and explanations appreciated.

Language / Chodzic versus Isc. When and why? [18]

chodzić: to go
iść: to be going

But both of these verbs have future tense forms.
Idę translates as 'I go'.

Life / Tips on tipping in Poland [45]

My Polish friends were annoyed at me when they saw I wasn't tipping.

I didn't know I was supposed to!

I then started to leave about 10%.

Poles are laid back about it BUT a few tips makes a big difference to a poor wage.
