Love / Are Polish Girls scared of English Guys [124]

Absolutely.
All Polish girls are scared of English guys.
They're attracted to Spaniards.
They think Germans smell.
They adore Scandinavians.
They steer clear of Austrians.
They make out with Frenchmen.
They cheat on Greeks.
They hate Asians, looks askance at Africans and despise all Americans.
They've never heard of Australians because Australians live too far away.

Language / Poland in different languages? [74]

Lengyelorszag

It's Hungarian, isn't it? I'm really looking forward to learning this language. It's fascinating! So different! :)

Travel / Poland Warsaw Airport to Train [26]

Bus line 175. I don't remember exactly, but it takes about 20 mins to get to the railway station (depending on the traffic... if you're unlucky, it may take longer...).

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

What??? You pipe in and shoot against Germans and expect to be treated with satin gloves???
Keep out the next time when you can only dish out but not take it...

Now I'm convinced only British people understand irony and can laugh at themselves!
I made a casual comment on your language which IS harsh and sounds bad in most circumstances (apart from when it's used by generals to give orders to their soldiers) and you attacked me personally. I've got nothing against you as a person because I don't know you and you shouldn't call me names just because you feel insecure about your own language and can't accept a few jokes about it.

I had a nice argument with EbonyandIvory...and then it got downhill thanks to you and others...great! :(

Sorry to interrupt your learned discussion! :/ Please try to restrain your aggression next time though.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

And why should I say these words to such a Hackfresse like yours???

Hey, there's no need to get angry! I'm just teasing you a bit and that's all! You Germans are so stuck-up!!!
BTW, I went to Berlin twice and I really enjoyed it! :) And I met some nice and helpful German people there! ;)

Anyway... it's not nice to call sb a shitface. I don't think I deserved it.

Says a Pole! *rolls eyes*
At least we have some vowels to avoid spitting....:)

There are plenty of vowels in Polish - a, ą, e, ę, i, o, ó, u, y... not much spitting going on (unless you suffer from a speech impediment...).

I bet you can't avoid spitting while saying "Ich liebe dich" - come on!!! Try and say it without spitting on sb's face. Not something I would consider extremely romantic!!! :P

i've never heard a worse spoken language, so serious, so offical and army like 100% of the time, sounds like you have to stand up straight lift your head up high just to speak a few words

I couldn't agree more!
Love songs in German sound hilarious :D

Life / Polish culture do's and dont's? [106]

Seanus wrote:
Charge onto trams as quickly as possible

Not true. Most Poles have gentlemanly instincts, and let old people, women, or disabled on first. If it is younger people, yes, you may see a bit of pushing.

Haha... I absolutely agree. I've got one curious little observation of mine to add, though. You may see a bit of pushing on the side of young people, but they won't win with all those stooped half-dead grey-haired grannies who miraculously shake off their lethargy upon the arrival of the bus/tram/whatever. I've had several near-death experiences with such grannies! They can be a real pain for us, young well-behaved commuters. They will stop at nothing in their struggle to be the first to get on the bus.

A short film, just to give you a clue (starts somewhere after the 40th second...)

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Jova:
It surely does. Still, I hate when people assume I'm a catholic, a thief and an alcoholic just when they hear I'm Polish.

thief -I`ve never heard that stereotype before.

I wrote it with reference to capellanna's words:

i am an atypical pole, i am not religious at all, i hate vodka :),i do not steal, i have a very high academic degree and i teach english in America

Language / Learning Polish, good for beginners? [29]

Really? :(

Surely you know a book for beginners?

Well, if you give it a try... 10 years of studying should take you to a communicative level :D
I don't know any books for beginners since I'm a native Polish speaker ;) I'm sure others will help you out soon.
Good luck with your learning! :)

I know some good British comedies btw ;)

Do you want to talk about it? :P

Language / Learning Polish, good for beginners? [29]

My ability to grasp languages (other than English) is virtually non-existant

Sorry to say that, but you don't stand a chance :P

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

being Polish myself i feel kind of uneasy about admitting that we are racist

Being Polish myself I feel kind of relieved to notice that there are all kinds in Poland, just like everywhere else. Some of them are racist, some of them aren't.

i am an atypical Pole, i am not religious at all, i hate vodka :), i do not steal, i have a very high academic degree and i teach english in America

Yeah, I must be very atypical as well then. I just happen to teach English in Poland... and my academic degree is coming soon...
I could characterize many of my friends in a similar way. Are we all so atypical???

we are highly critical of others, but to ourselves we are crystal clear

Really? 100% percent of us? I'm not very critical of others and I don't think I'm crystal clear. That'd be 99,9% then...

we do not accept other religions because we don't know them

I know quite a lot about different religions. However, I don't find them attractive (including Catholicism).

we owe it to communism, we have a scar in our minds

Communism is equally important to me as the Battle of Dunkirk (I've heard about it but have no particular experiences connected with it). It means nothing to me and has left no scar in my mind whatsoever because I simply don't remember it. I was a little girl when it collapsed. Moreover, I think it's always best to look ahead.

i am ashamed that some of us do certain things that later on create stereotypes and misrepresent polish people as an entire nation

Aren't you causing this by writing all this nonsense?

i remember once a guy said to me that polish people are dumb. and i asked him to elaborate on that and he was at a loss for words. i challenged that guy and it turned out that he was dumb.

I find all the people who make generalizations (usually basing on some silly stereotypes) dumb.

cultures are different, that's what makes it all worth exploring

It surely does. Still, I hate when people assume I'm a catholic, a thief and an alcoholic just when they hear I'm Polish.

Food / Stuffed cabbage - gołąbki - recipe [59]

Голубцы (russian) Golubci .. he he .. we have the same dish )))

Мне кажется, что между польской и русской культурой вообще много сходств... Жаль, что взаимосвязи между нашими странами портит политика...

gołąbki are made of minced pork meat ,egg, cooked rice etc and stuff wrapped in cabbage, in a tomatoe sauce are they not ?

I've never succeeded in making "gołąbki" by myself, but I saw my parents do it hundreds of times, so I assume your recipe seems accurate.
