Study / CELTA course in Poland: Kraków vs Wrocław [21]

I'm considering a full-time course next year. The search gave me options in Warsaw (Language Training Center), Kraków (British Council) and Wrocław (International House). BC and IH seem to be the most reputable so my choice will fall on either Kraków or Wrocław.

I would appreciate some feedback from people with first-hand experience. Which of the two centers provides better resources and better quality training?

Assisting with accommodations is another important criterion for me.

Study / CELTA course in Poland: Kraków vs Wrocław [21]

Curious as to how many classroom hours you've already "logged in", so to speak, prior to enrolling in the course.

I've been teaching languages for 13 years, including 3 years of actual classroom ELT and 10 years of teaching my mother tongue to foreigners.

Is English your first language?

No.

a few will insist that the instructor teach only in their mother tongue

I am currently employed by a private language school and we have only one American teacher and one Brit. The rest of the staff are non-native speakers (Spain, Brazil, Ukraine, Polish teachers of course) and the owner is OK with that. Apparently in Poland it's not a big deal (but it might depend on a school)

Thank you for the comment. Wow, I didn't know that BC centers could go autonomous..

As for the post-training employment, I don't really count on finding a job in those cities. Smaller towns sometimes offer decent pay + accommodations. And I'm not that hungry for "big city life".

Work / EU Blue Card for Poland. Which salary is needed? [47]

Blue Card for ESL teachers in Poland

Does anybody know if it's possible to get a teaching job that offers Karta Niebieska? Realistically, having a degree, experience and a CELTA certificate - what are the chances?

Work / Teaching in public school VS private school in Poland [9]

I noticed that private language schools usually offer a different type of contract (umowa zlecenia) which does not have as many benefits as a regular work contract (umowa o pracę). Any body here who has experience in public school sector and can compare it to teaching in private schools? Workload, accommodations for foreign teachers, legal status support, other benefits?

Work / Teaching in public school VS private school in Poland [9]

Thank you - mafketis, Lyzko and Nathans - for replying. Yeah, I am aware of the classroom management issues. I guess it's like everywhere..

Anything on the teaching workload? I saw couple job offers (public schools) that said 18hrs/w and 21hrs/w full time. Is there a standard?

Also, how willing are public school administrations to deal with foreigners (papers, permits etc)?

Life / Regional Air Pollution in Poland [2]

South of Poland is the most polluted part of the country. Silesia and party Lesser Poland are historically industrial regions. Coal mines are still a big deal here. People heat houses with coal and.. burn trash (a habit the government is trying to regulate by fines). Hence the smog.

I use Plume mobile app to monitor the air quality, by the way.

Life / Worst aspects of living in Poland? [82]

1) air pollution (Southern part mostly)
2) conservative government influenced by the Church
3) very difficult language (for non-Slavic immigrants)

It's not as much about the conservative part, rather about the Church part..

Too many decisions and regulations the government introduces are heavily influenced by the Catholic Church lobby. Starting from the innocent niedziele niehandlowe and up to the abortion laws.

Study / What do Poles think of a foreign person who tries to learn Polish [47]

We would never know what they THINK:)

You get a polite compliment (often it's an inflated praise) which is just a nice thing to say in order to show appreciation for your efforts. Or it can be a more sincere expression of fascination. It depends on how genuinely people are interested in you, how educated they are..

Work / To move or not to move from India to Poland [9]

It could take 6 months in one voivodeship and 1 year in another. Different governmental offices work with different speed. Bigger cities process applications slower due to larger number of applicants. I guess researching and networking in a particular area would give you a clearer picture.

Study / Studying for free in Poland with C1 [3]

I heard that if foreigners pass C1 language exam they can study for free in Poland. Does that apply to all universities? What about Master's programs?

Study / Studying for free in Poland with C1 [3]

In a state university it is one of the conditions. I googled it and found some info (not sure if I can share links here). You need to have a certificate from Państwowa Komisja do spraw Poświadczania Znajomości Języka Polskiego jako Obcego.

Law / Permanent EU resident status in Poland - what are the other benefits here besides the permission to work? [3]

The benefts of Polish EU resident card in other countries?

What are some benefits of the EU resident card outside of Poland? I'm particularly interested in correlation with local immigration laws. For example, if a person with Poland issued EU residency card decided to permanently move to another EU country would it be easier/faster to get a local equivalent of karta pobytu?

Real Estate / Landlord in Poland "doesn't" want to return the deposit [6]

Call and kindly ask to bring the proof of the "electricity bill increase" as you "can't find any info on that". Clean up. When they show up forget about "good relationship" and be firm about your point - the place is clean, nothing damaged, here is the rent agreement, I need my deposit. As a last resort, if they don't return it, let them know you will consult with a lawyer and the issue will have to be settled in court (just LOOK like you mean it).
