USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

1.)With the migration that has followed Poland's accession to the EU, the Polish-born population in the whole of the UK is estimated to have risen to 515,000 in the year to March 2010.[22]

Lenka, do you think that perhaps this has anything to do with the fact that Poles can emigrate to the UK without restriction while securing a green card is an arduous process? If all visa and work restrictions were lifted in the USA, do you think the statistics you cited would remain as-is?

In any case, both sides of this argument are too simplistic. Poland, like any country emerging from the iron curtain has over the last 20+ years begun to develop a middle class, replete with educated women who have no use for screwing over some American schlub. On the other hand, there are still a great many people in Poland who earn meager wages and have no hope of a middle class life while within the confines of their native country. At least some subset of these people are women who no doubt use their charms to trick older guys into marrying them and later screw them over. This isn't a problem that's specific to Poland. The recent scandal involving Donald Sterling and the LA clippers illustrates that this can happen anywhere (ie. old dude with money who has a romantic interest with a woman 1/3 his age who eventually screws him over).

I'm Polish and when I consider moving out of Poland EU always wins- so yes, I think I'm an expert on my own thoughts and feelings.

So, we've established that your opinion is such that the EU wins. This is hardly representative of anything other than your personal opinion, no?

USA, Canada / My Polish girlfriend is having the baby in Canada! Health insurance and Visa advice please [3]

Your girlfriend is ineligible for OHIP (or whatever province you're in) unless she has permanent resident status. You would need to marry her and then apply for permanent residency. In Ontario, there is a 3 month waiting period after landing before health coverage kicks in. There may be some exceptions under extrordinairy circumstances, but I would expect that you're going to need to pay cash for the medical services delivered to your girlfriend should you choose to deliver the baby in Canada.

Note: it is true that you can confer Canadian citizenship to your baby even if born outside of Canada. However, if you're a first generation immigrant, the rules under which your baby will be able to retain citizenship in adulthood are more complicated. You may want to check out the CiC website.

Cheers bud.

Work / I am a graphic designer. Is Poland a good country to come to and work? [16]

Not to sound dickish, but if you don't know whether it's a good place to work why are you interested in coming to work here?

In any case, my vantage point is that if you have good gig at a fortune 500 company that is willing to give you a nice package to come over here, then its a fabulous place to work. On the other hand, low skilled labour is not highly rewarded here, and while services and some foodstuffs are relatively cheap compared to western europe, you'll find manufactured goods are generally just as expensive (if not more) than in Germany. I would certainly never recommend someone come here to work under such an arrangement. I should also note, highly skilled labour such as medicine is also not as well compensated as in western European countries.

If you'd like more advice, try providing more details about yourself.

Cheers
