Language / Collection of learning resources for learning the Polish language [129]

WOW!!

Thanks cjjc and everyone else! Some of these I had already come across, and have used but there are alot that I haven't. I can see some serious web surfing coming on!

A couple of other good ones that I use are byki.com and quizlet.com

With byki.com you can get free language learning software with a limited amount of lists which you can learn, but there are alot more lists available to download. This is what I actually started with, and have actually bought the full blown version now.

With quizlet.com you can use other peoples flashcards or you can make your own and they are basically learning drills. You go through all the cards and give your answers. When you have done them all, you go through any that you got wrong, and keep on doing it until you get them all right. It can become quite addictive!

Life / WHY ARE POLISH CALENDARS SKEWED? [42]

I have always been told that Sunday is the first day of the week, but don't really know where that has come from as we're not a particularly religious family. But have just checked my desk calendar, and the week starts on Monday!

As for the date, it has to be day, month, year. I get really confused when they are the other way round! But that could just be me lol ;)

Language / DECLENSIONS (the difference between suffixes) [11]

It has to be a nightmare for an English speaker to learn all the declensions.

It is...but having some very good books, and of course this forum helps!!

They should give a special medal for bravery for every foreigner who attempts
to learn Polish ;)

:):):):)

Language / I need some encouragement from Polish language speakers! [30]

Hi Andy

I am a native English speaker and have been learning Polish since June last year. Like you, I read some information on grammar near the start which made absolutely no sense and made me wonder was I a little bit mad to be learning such a hard language!

I left the grammar and just concentrated on learning phrases, words etc. I have a couple of good books - Colloquial Polish is really good and I use the BYKI software. Over the last couple of months I have started to understand a little bit of the grammar and am starting to look at the phrases that I have learnt to find out why the words are used the way they are.

Hang in there, and like everyone else has said don't worry about the grammar too much now.

Language / Polish locative and case declensions [16]

All I can say Derevon is...WOW!!

When I can actually get to the stage where I understand which case to use when, that will be extremely helpful ;)

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

you check twice whether you locked the car/front door
and a few more

Definitely LOL........that was my Mom.......I always used to think she was too security conscious I never realised it was a Polish thing......:))

Nope, not just a Polish thing. Me and my mum have gone out and she's sent me back to check that the door is locked...even after she has tried it 2 or 3 times before we left!!!!!

Language / Declension of młody and stary [9]

Cześć

If you were describing a boy and girl and were saying they are not old, they are young, which plural would you use? Would it be młode and stare because you're describing a mixed group?

Dziękuję

Emma

Law / Poland ISP's email addresses? [6]

Not sure if I'm posting this is the right forum category - not been on here for over 2 years!!!

Anyway, I need to send an email to a former polish colleague, however they had a little bit of trouble giving me the email address as they weren't sure how to tell it to me in English (conversation over the phone). I've had a quick look to see if I can find the right ISP - I was given hnt.pl - but this was at the third attempt and I don't think it was right.

So can anyone give me any idea of Polish ISP's so that I can attempt to get the correct email address.

Dziękuję
