News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

some guy with a condescending smile on his face asked me "so Poland is the one with all the dykes in it?" ....no...no...that's Holland. he looked confused and disappointed.

News / Juwenalia - holidays for students in Poland (updated) [20]

I remember visiting Olsztyn during the Juwenalia event about 11 years ago. It was quite the party for sure. and it still is. My grandmother still lives near the university and she was telling me the other day that the party has started and that the fireworks woke her up at night. she just rolled over and went back to sleep.

Law / Setting up small business in Poland? [191]

Oct 8, 09, 00:13 - Thread attached on merging:
starting up a business

Just out of curiosity, what does it take to start up a business in Poland? how much money do you need? can you get a loan or a grant? what kinds of businesses are more popular in Poland?

what kind of business are you setting up? are the forms fairly easy to fill out and where do you go to register your business?

If you're an EU citizen, it's painless provided you have the relevant 5 year residence card.

I am a Polish citizen but I haven't lived there for a really long time. so it might be more difficult for someone like myself? i've never heard of the 5 year residence card.

Do you have a Polish passport?

Yes I do have a Polish passport. I'm also listed as a resident at my grandmother's place. I even got to vote once in an election!

how long have you been in Poland? do you like it? can you speak Polish very well? I am seriously considering moving back there sometime soon.

olish citizen registered in Poland should have a dowód osobisty.

I'll have to ask my family next time I talk to them. when i registered a few years back they didn't tell me that i had to get a dowod osobisty right away as long as i planned to get one eventually. i will probably get one the next time i'm in Poland, which won't be until next summer.

thanks for all the advice!

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Aphrodisiac,
I am really enjoying this thread. I hope you keep writing and updating us about settling in in Poland. You should start a blog!
I miss Poland everyday, and I live in Canada now, but I don't think I would ever move back, just visit every so often. I love reading your stories about everyday life in Poland.

Hi Aphro,
your updates about Poland are great! very inspiring of you to make that big move back to Poland.
As for the SAD, I have one of those SAD therapy lamps that I use in the morning when I wake up (for about 15-20 minutes) and they are really great. I feel I have more energy during the day and I don't feel so down. Hope you can find one of those to help you out, cause you are right, it needs to be dealt with soon before you get into more of a slump because of the dark days.

take care!
