News / GDP of Poland.. 338 billion pop-38.5mil Cali GDP 1.7 Trillion pop-37.7mil [70]

If you take 500,000 emigres out of the available labor pool, you still end up with about 450,000 jobs created in order to give a 3% decline in unemployment. That would only work everyone that emigrated was unemployed. Looking over the longer term, to get from 20% unemployment to the current 10%(ish), there either were a lot of jobs created, or 1.7million million unemployed poles emigrated.

Do you know if the majority of the emigres were officially registered as unemployed in Poland?

But I must add, that in Poland part time workers also don't fall in unemployed category as long as they receive half of minimum wage.

I saw that too in the wikipedia link.

The reason that I ask is, lets take 2006 for example. Unemployment fell from 17.6% to 14.9% with the creation of 31,000 jobs (this may be off, got it from E&Y, up for better sources). From a labor force of about 17 million, 17.6% is about 3,000,000 unemployed 14.9% is 2,500,000. Do you think that half a million jobs were created in 2006? It seems like something is missing.

Just seems kind of strange, the only thing that I could think of would be some sort of changes being applied to unemployment criteria.

What makes a municipality a city in the Netherlands?

van wikipedia:

"Het wettelijke verschil tussen stad en platteland is na de grondwet van 1848 en de Gemeentewet van 1851 definitief komen te vervallen."

In short according to wiki, in Poland you are unemployed when you are registered as unemployed, doesn't matter for how long.

Do you know of any changes in the criteria over the last couple of years that may have effected unemployment numbers? Has land ownership always been part of the criteria? Or underemployment?

Life / Can foreigners really understand Poles? [136]

Poland seems to be the country most wanting to move on from the past. A lot of the other ex-commie countries seem to be still stuck on what they should be, more to Russia....more to the West.

Do you honestly think that? In what way? Is it just a problem of execution being the reason that it's not happening? The will to do so being there, but for some reason, it's not being done?

Have you got a link, please?

I was using the IMF data, which was a bit kinder to Poland

Eurostat has Poland dead last in PPS

epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/tgm/graph.do?tab=graph&plugin=1&pcode=tsieb010&language=en&toolbox=data

In 2008, it was lower than in most EU countries (incl Germany, UK or France):

Keeping comparisons with the 2004 accession countries is probably a better gauge.

In fact, Polish rules for calculating unemployment are harsher than EU rules and lead to higher figures..

i was thinking what is the criteria for someone being "unemployed"?

etting hold of some simple books sounds like a good idea.

Magazines and comic books helped me quite a bit.

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

I think it's safe to say that Poland is completely ignoring this law in practice - the "French" approach to the European Union if you will. Of course - has anyone actually asked them to comply with the law? Then again, given the state of the Polish justice system, it would seem unlikely that any judgement could be enforced anyway.

It's more of a question of application. Inviting you to Warsaw in 3 months for a meeting could be considered compliance. The document is very vague.

As long as that growth translate into real gains to PPP. Right now, that doesn't seem to be the case. Of the 2004 ascension countries, Poland is right above last place in PPP. Poland is also carrying a fairly high public debt load. With the unemployment rate dropping (except for 2009, of course), are there really that many jobs being created? How does Poland calculate unemployment?

Life / Typical Examples of Polish Parking Entitlement (post yours) [57]

This is new for 2010, we welcome our new friends parking on the street and creating a clusterf*ck at the intersection. Bonus points for the use of snow covering the no parking zones to support "out of sight, out of mind".

Off-Topic / Europe according to Poles and other European nations [44]

Kind of sad that we appear at every other map as gas suppliers

and you know, the real strange thing about that is that most of the europe destined gas just passes through russia from the 'stans.

News / The Internet totally uncontrolled in Poland? [19]

Both are addictive and suck up money, not even mentioning moral issues...Hey, if anything goes, anything goes...

As long as one can go to the corner shop and buy alcohol and a pack of smokes, your argument makes no sense.

Yes and no...I am aware of the 'chains' used for these purpose, but a good 'cyber man' or network man can do some grunt work and trace them...Just eliminate the sites...

Good luck trying to trace onion routing. Just don't go to the sites that you have issues with, and stop trying to press your hypocritical morals onto others.

Love / Do you think that Polish should stick to Polish? [128]

I agree it would make life easier in the sense that if I were to have kids we would teach them Polish and teach them Polish culutre. But if I were to end up with someone from a different culture/nationality it would be hard to mix the two together and teach them possibly two languages and cultures....

If it ever comes to that, we've got 4 between us. You end up proud of your heritage(s), but never bound to any one in particular. I think it's given me personally a much more open approach to the world, and people in general. There is no 100% tie to American, Slavic, or German culture, but at the same time, you get to be a part of all of them.

Travel / When is the best time (month) to see Poland? [31]

I've gotten the most from places in Central Europe during early to mid fall. The tourist hordes have generally already left, and the weather is very agreeable. Football is just kicking off at that time, every teams supporters will still have hope at that point (except Cracovia, the season is usually depressing for them from the start...).

Food / Polish Beer Recipes [39]

Apparently, USPS will not ship alcohol under any circumstances (which is ok, because I don't trust Poczta Polska with pillows, and wouldn't be real comfortable with them handling beer).

UPS and FedEx ship it, no major questions asked if it's labeled as something else. Let me check on the legality of this, worst case scenario, I have a military APO address that I can use...

ya drunk, brew some beer. I'm sure Paz and I can help you out.

If anyone wants to do some trading, let me know. We should get a nice trade up program going. I'll start putting a bit of the good stuff aside if you're interested in trying some of my babies. (Ron, if you do end up making some good Krupnik, I'm willing to make the mighty sacrifice and drink some of your moonshine :) I have some sloe gin going that might be right up your alley...

Never seen one of those American contraptions before. So the word barbecue means something different depending on where you're from. And since we invented English, the yanks must be wrong. ;) (just chain jerking)

Your wastefulness was fixed. Two words with the same meaning, pfft!

grilling - flames, two beers and you have your meal

barbecuing - smoke and indirect heat, a case of beer and you have your meal (or something resembling jerky because you managed to fall asleep and leave your chunk of meat smoking over night...)

Had you tried some better before that? :) Maybe you just don't like the very taste.
Well... my bad... I rephrase it from "decent" to "acceptable" cause what one could buy in shops in early 90th had been "unacceptable".

Kvas is one of those drinks that I really want to like, I mean, it has everything that one needs to make a good drink, but I just can't make the connection. Maybe it's just been bad kvas, or maybe there is a beginner or baby kvas to start and work your way up to street vendor kvas... Kvas tour in Moscow this summer?

Basically if you can kill it, we can grill it!

Grilled deer burgers is where it's at. Good lord, nothing better. A nice slab of brisket is also up there if you have the time :)
