Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

But there's nothing wrong with holding on to your own identity and cherishing it. The British have never expected the Poles who've settled there to change their names, not eat Polish food, not observe Polish customs - why should the British who've settled in Poland behave differently?

does anyone insist that you do so?

It was Goethe (I think) who said that a man is as human as many times as the number of languages he speaks.

it was also Goethe who envisioned replacement of Polish by German and suggested the means to that measure - can find some links if you really insist

News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

this reminds me of one story - in the early 50's a couple of hundreds of Korean children (orphans, half-orfans and the like) came to Poland - they encountered completely different attitudes here (there were times that only (well mostly) people who had a calling to work with children used to that) - there were some problems with the kids at first but then they accepted many things that were new to them - some of these kids learned Polish pretty good - then after a couple of years all of them had to go back to Korea - most of them had problems in fitting back into Korean realities - some even wanted to go back to Poland

there was a documentary on this sometime ago in Polish state TV

Work / info. work in Poland with and temporary card residence? [5]

the most obvious thing to try is to get your partner to marry you officially - even if only in a state ceremony (so not Catholi/religious marriage) - then as a spouse of a Polish person you can get residence card pretty easy

if this is not an option then I personally don't know enough to advise you on the topic

Genealogy / Family Name UNIATYCKI from Lwow [11]

there is a town called Uniatycze in western Ukraine Polonius

Uniatycki / Konopska or Konopski / Chec ? Thanks.

these people could have been equally Polish or Jewish
while cki/ski surnames are typically Polish many Jews accepted surnames of the noblemen they used to work for in the late 18th an early 19th century (they worked in various roles for the noblemen but were free people)

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

b) nobody outside Poland speaks Polish. years and years of studying to finally, [i]maybe[i], learn a language that is essentially useless.

well it proves to be useful for some - every country needs translators and interpreters also of Polish language - not all of them can be Polish themselves (it is easy to learn the basics of English but learning it thouroughly surely takes time and/or some other investments)

also some in Britain now are better off knowing some Polish
but it's true Polish language won't ever have any international importance - an international language needs to be easily learned and this is not a case with Polish

you sure agree that it is good job guarantee to learn Mandarin (though Mandarin is not an international language) - sure Polish knowlegde is much more of a niche ability in terms of demand

Work / Does it make sense to move from the UK to Wroclaw for this salary? [50]

4.5k brutto is not much money especially when you need to rent an appartment in Wrocław
still if the benefits include good health insurance (you don't want to wait to see a doctor) and can add some good ammount of money based on your reputation among customers up your salary maybe it is worth it - you should try learning more about the benefits or ask here if anybody knows what they can look like (I have no idea)

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

Also, unless you land yourself a job in a factory surrounded by Poles who happen to not speak any English, it's just as useless in the UK. No business owner in the UK would require,or even expect an Englishman to speak Polish so that he can hire him for a job. They came to England, they should speak English. Simples.

the realities are sometimes different - i.e. English enterpreuners advertise jobs only for people able to speak Polish (because there are plenty of Polish workers) - the aim is only Polish people should apply - the practice has already caused much outrage among the local populations (the British) which is no surprise - the practice has also been challenged legally but I am not sure about the outcome - the thing is many businesses hired lots of Polish people (for minimum wages) because there were no British people willing to work for such wages (or they soon abandoned the positions) - now with the recession in Britain people are looking for whatever jobs they can have - even in the environments where hardly any English is spoken - from the business manager's point of view it may be impractical now to employ British people in such circumstances -

there is some fault here on the British workforce - business owners went to hire people with better 'work ethics' (mork hardworking simply) when only they could- some businesses might have gone out of business had they not managed to attract Poles or were forced to increase wages significantly

Real Estate / IS IT A GOOD TIME TO INVEST IN POLISH REAL ESTATE? [83]

I would wait a bit with the investment - Polish zloty will fall a little more - I think it will reach 4.50 PLN for Euro in the middle of the next year

The promise of three million appartaments was nothing more than a worthless electoral promise which no one at their senses was taking seriously.

the 'Rodzina na swoim' programme started by PiS is still running - PiS only envisioned other measures to make it easier to develope new housing areas - some of these were also adapted by PO even if in somehow modified form

Study / Film study in Poland [5]

as far as I know Polish film making is known for it's solid school of photography (there are many Polish directors of photography in Hollywood (Dariusz Wolski - the Pirate ot th Carribeans; Janusz Kamiński et all.)

I gather there is film photography faculty at the £ódż Film-making school - they have a website - filmschool.lodz.pl - this is where Polanski and many other Polish film artists graduated from (cinematographic faculty) - there are couple of other faculties there

there is also an entry on the school in wikipedia (in English) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_School_in_%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA

USA, Canada / Why are there so many Poles in America? [6]

ever heard of population expansion - the former serf were granted freedom and ownership of the land they cultivated for themselves - however former gentry latifundia hadn't been divided - and within two generations there were too many people on the land used by former serfs too feed - the issue has been addressed after Poland regained independence and latifundia were diminished in size and number then (Reforma rolna 1919, Agrarian reform)(though did not cease to exist completely untill 1945 and the communist rule)

Food / Problem to find "cream" in Poland [23]

you are wrong here - creme fraiche is actually somewhat soured cream high in fat content (28%) there is an entry on it in English wikipedia - creme fraiche is not widely available in Poland but should be available in at least some shops of the delicatessen sort - eventually one can prepare creme fraiche on his/her own using Polish sour cream and the thick sweet cream (śmietanka 30 to 36% fat) in 1 to 2 proportion - you need to heat and mix both of them but not too much (60 degrees) and them leave for at least 10 hours - I found this recipe on a Polish website

creme fraiche is known not to curdle while heated (contrary to Polish sour cream) - that's why it is widely used in French cuisine as an ingredient in sauces and soups (and in many other recipes)

Love / How to please Polish women? [216]

she even get at me if people dont say hello to her when we go out i feel she watching me all the time seeing am looking at other women when she drunk she always starts fights

it only shows how insecure she is, the problem is she thinks other people are responsible for that which is simply not true - I don't mind insecure people as long as they don't blame the world for their misery (I am myself very insecure person) and don't act it out

then again it is not your responsibility to drag her out of that especially when it is against her will - and you have to keep your self-worth sense which is endangered in that relationship - think it over - if you don't feel that you can face her and tell her all about what is not acceptable for you in your relationship then just arrange things to get rid of her after you are sure you are utterly fed up with being treated the way she treats you -

and I am Polish

if you think that you still owe her anything you actually owe her the truth - so tell her about how you see it/feel it if you only feel you can - you are worth better treatment than this

Love / How to please Polish women? [216]

master
i dont know what to do

you are simply to good to her and she really needs it the other way - if you don't feel you can provide her with that just be prepared to part (which can actually be not hassle-free and you will be perhaps forced to call the police)

the thing is she feels she is not worthy of all you give her - that's the reason she's jealous and insecure - that's what aggression springs from

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

Russia can act with impunity and cripple Europe this winter. Polish business is heavily reliant on Russian gas and even temporary cutoffs can visibly hamper industrial progress here.

industrial gas consumption is already limited in Poland - one fourth of Russian gas went to Poland through a middle man - RossUkrEnergo which is also a middle man in Russian-Ukraine gas deal - since last January gas crisis the RossUkrEnergo is out of business (as agreed between Ukraine and Russia) and Poland was left without its one fourth of supply - RossUkrEnergo is bankrupt - what is more Russia doesn't wish to sign long term deal with Poland (even though the conditions offered by Polish side were pretty favorable for Russians - there is a need for success in the present government's foreign policy - one of it's claims was Kaczyńskis were obsessed with Russians and antagonised them - so PO government is ready to make big consessions to Russians just to strike some deals with them to enhance their 'diplomats' image) (you can be diplomatic to whatever extent - if someone is bent to screw you and has an egde over you he will have at least short term success)

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

Buffalo, NY - $0.63/liter
Niagara, ON - $0.90/liter

Explain that.

simple - more tax on gas in Canada than the US - in Poland all taxes amount to almost 80 per cent of gas/petrol prices

enormous deep gas fields beneath the Carpathians

Dont believe the hype. I took a 75% loss on these.

well there was no hype in the media in Poland about that - I only read it online on some industry related website (it was in Polish) -

what I have read they take gas from 5 km deep reservoirs in southern US (Luisiana) - they have prospected it according to newer gas/oil origin theories (I think it was the 80's)

there was a suspection that such reservoirs lie beneath the Carpathians (it is often that smaller shallower gas fields (or oil fields) lie above vaster fields beneath) - the thing is these deeper fields are much more expensive to develope

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

I know who'd I would choose for.

it does not matter who you would choose for for obvious reasons - btw it is very sympthomatic that the Westerners seem to know better what kind of politicians should govern Poland - I tell you stop thinking you know better - what is good for you is not necessarily good for Poland

Russian will always own Europe coz the EU will never stand up against them:)

this is why Poland (at least part of Polish political scene) seek close alliance with America but America seems not be interested at the moment

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

Tusk seemingly does.

Tusk is a known cheater and liar (to use a quote;) - curious if anyone here will know where the quote is from)

Watch Tusk behaving confronted with Angela Merkel and Putin - it's not the way the host is supposed to behave - the guy was shaking after the famous conference whereby he dismissed his closest political allies (working as ministers in his cabinet) and went on to cast grand accusations on CBA and it's boss - it must have been tension within (am I able to lie so blatantly and will they believe me)

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

well, the oil and gas prospecting works in Poland were not the highest world standard during the 80's and now there are voices we have enough gas of our own only the fields are not being developed - actually one can think there could have been high level sabotage in Polish governing bodies influenced by Russian agents so as not to prospect and develope Polish gas fields (sidenote: I am not sure if it is true, but read once that American prospectors in early 90's have discovered enormous deep gas fields beneath the Carpathians - this is not included in the estimates made that we could be self-sufficient as for natural gas, AFAIK)

Work / Average salary in Poland for PhD in IT [40]

someone mentioned in another thread here that developers salary can ammount to 7000 zl - but it is hugely city-dependent as far as I know (you will earn most in Warszawa and perhaps Wroclaw as a software developer)

the thread was started by the Kiltmaker guy and it was quite recently
