News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Don't forget that more than a few of the lovers of PIS preferred pre-1989 Poland.

That's why they want to do redo 1989 without any of that privatization or icky capitalism. It would be PRL economics and RC politics* just like the PiS core electorate wants.

*with an anti-communist inquisition that would soon engulf many of the core PiS electorate in flames, but revolutions, unless turned off in a hurry do eat their own children.

That's what the TK is for -- to rule on constitutionality.

But the TK could not make that or any other ruling on the basis of an outdated and no-longer-binding TK law, as was the case in this instance

1. Make an unconstitutional law that neuters the TK

2. Say the TK can't rule on it the law.

3. ??????

4. We get to do 1989 over again!

It's crystal clear that if the TK operated to the unconstitutional law that they passed, then nothing would get done

JK wanted to win a large enough majority to change the constitution. When he didn't do that his tactic became destroying the constitution and replacing "rule of law" with "rule of party. It's obvious that he has some very bad stuff in the works or he wouldn't need to attack existing structure of law so flagrently.

It is the Sejm that enacts laws which are valid and legally binding until delcared unconstitutional.

In other words, PiS have recreated a legal swamp worthy of the PRL (that their supporters so desperately want to return to).

Work / Salary of a Native Speaker Proofreader in a company in Poland [11]

These jobs don't go to people off the street, it's all word of mouth stuff, and any professional proofreader would bite someone's hand off for a full time contract.

The fulltime contract part sounds weird. I wonder if this is EU funded. I took part in a EC funded project (big mistake) and it was a major bureaucratic nightmare trying to fit their rules into the Polish system.....

Mafketis will know better

Not necessarily. I really don't actively seek out translation or proofreading work, it just comes to me of its own accord (at highly irregular intervals).

Work / Salary of a Native Speaker Proofreader in a company in Poland [11]

Ask for some samples of text that you would be proofreading.

Your fees should be based (among other things) on:

What type of text it is: (technical, legal - in these cases your qualifications matter). Is it aimed at other professionals or the general public? Again, in more specialized kinds of text there will be jargon that you might not recognize and you need to have some kind of feedback established at least at the beginning so you can distinguish weird (but established) jargon vs mistakes. Generally clients are unaware of these issues.

What shape it arrives to you in: Does it just need a minor correction here and there or is it a goat rodeo? Is it just language they want you to look at or also style requirements?

What shape do they want it to leave in? Do they want it to be in shape for native speaker readers or is general international crap english good enough?

I'm not that expensive, and my basic rate (for stuff that won't need much work and that's not too specialized or in a field I know a lot about) is 10 zl per page (1800 characters including spaces) after taxes. Difficulties of various kinds add to that. But most of my proofreading is for private and or academic clients and not for corporations.

News / Crash of Tu-154 at Smolensk-North--could it have been a bomb in the Polish plane? [233]

Yes. Extremely competent people who can get things done have no need to distract people with crazy theories. They also have no need to destroy systems of government and they don't need a media echo chamber telling them how great (and misunderstood!) they are.

The fact that PiS needs to attack the constitution, push Smolensk (non-stop) and turn public media into a mouthpiece cum echo-chamber tells the rational minded everything they need to know about them. This is why they appeal mostly do damaged and/or under-educated people. Like attracts like.

isn't taken seriously in Poland.

He's taken seriously by the only person that matters in the Polish government. So he has a platform for his delusions.

i myself don`t think that Russia assassinated Lech Kaczyński

This forces me to consider the possibility that they did....

certain circles from the west of Europe behind assassination of Lech Kaczyński, with intent to increase rift between Poland and Russi

Well I'm sure that Tusk and Komorowski will be blamed for Smolensk if PiS decides for closer relations with Russia (because non-horrible governments won't have anything to do with them)

. The youngest voters supported PiS

In other words, people too young to remember the last PiS government voted for them this time. I bet they won't do that again.

But it is needed.

Then it should be easy to sell to other countries, what are some arguments in favor? What would/could it achieve that's not doable through existing arrangements? (diffculty level: do not use Serbia or any derivation thereof in your answer).

Why are Anglos of this forum upset because Duda announced Intermarium?

Speaking for myself I'm not upset. I don't think it's especially needed and getting other countries to play along is not a trivial problem. My working assumption is that it's a non-starter because there won't be enough support in other countries (though if there is support then more power to them).

Perhaps so, but why did most young people choose PiS?

A couple I knew who voted for PiS voted for Duda and Szydło and were horrified and surprised (they are young) at the return of JK and AM and the rest of the toxic elders who were carefully kept out of sight until after the elections and now regret their votes.

Many young PiS voters feel tricked and betrayed (as well they might).

the informal super-government otherwise known as the post-RT establishment has called the shots the whole time.

This is a paranoid fantasy. Repeating it like a mantra won't make it true.

effectively shut out average Poles from such opportunities

Your complaint is not against cronyism but the idea that the wrong group of cronies is in power. Meanwhile I know lots of Polish people with no ties to either Solidarity or PZPR who have done just fine in post-communist Poland.

As I said Poland is now in an income trap. In any rapidly developing country there comes a time when income is lower than it should be because of structural economic reasons. A country in that position either finds a way forward allowing incomes to Grow (Japan, Germany) or through unrest halts development so that incomes fall back to pre-development levels (Latin America, Greece, Portugal).

You're in favor of stopping development so that the whole country can settle back into equitable poverty.

Although it's not in the constituion, it was the SB, military and PZPR biggies that came out further ahead than those they had oppressed for decades.

If you're convinced of that, it's because that's the reality you want. Realize that no one else is obliged to share your desires to be oppressed and blame others endlessly....

Approved by the people of Poland who hadn't the foggiest about what was really going on behind the scenes

And you think you do?

If the constitution needs reforming, under the rule of law you convince the public and then vote on a new one. Simply modifying it on the fly and retroactively sets a terrible terrible precedent.

But you're in favor of rule of party and not rule of law and you're convinced that the end justifies the means (where have we heard that before?)

Ignoring international law will have consequences

Ignoring the VC after they asked for their opinion will make them seem non-serious (at best). At the same time most citizens of most countries don't like perception of being attacked by outsiders. Outside opinions need a deft touch that the EU doesn't have...

News / How would Poland change for the better (or worse) under a PiS government? [257]

Basically a copy of Putin-ism.

The relationship between the Russian orthodox church and Putin is no different than their relationship with the communists. The church is a big supporter of the rehabilitation of Stalin....

But point taken. The leadership of PiS was formed by the PRL and so they're sub-consciously trying to recreate it. It was a world that might not have always been comfortable but it was far more familiar to them than the reality of younger people in Poland now.

small, tight-knit hand-washes-hand clique

I suppose one form of belief in the supernatural (catholicism) makes it easier to believe other things for which there is no real world empirical evidence....

The time has come to spread the benefits around.

And a small group of politicians practicing cronyism and appointing their unqualified buddies to important poistions is just the group to do it! (talk about believing impossible things before breakfast)

I have called you out as a liar

So? Is that supposed to impress anyone?

The basic facts are that PiS sympathisers had no sense of apolitical decorum and booed the president (de jure head of the armed forces) and prime minister at an occasion meant to honor war veterans. At the very best that behavior showed no class and a crass disregard for Polish history. And you defend the booers?

with all the subterfuge, lies and bullying that KOD are leveling on them.

Please give examples.

The measure of support for PiS in the east and in the countryside is support for PSL. 40 per cent is a sign of an unhappy base.

Who you to dictate to Polish poltical parties?

Me no dictate to Polish political parties.

Anyhoo, all I'm saying that if someone politicizes an event, they shouldn't complain when other voices chime in. The side that opens the political pandora's box doesn't get to cry 'foul!' when others treat the event politically.

This has nothing to do with party politics (since I support no Polish political party).

Study / Study in Gdansk and want to know about foreign student life in Poland and working environment [6]

That poll is by a private company selling English lessons and is meaningless. For over 95 % of jobs in Poland, English is useless unless it's backed up by Polish. Polish is far more important for anything in the service sector.

Gdańsk is mostly a tourist destination for Polish people (and secondarily German speakers) neither of which finds the prospect of dealing with a waiter in English to be delightful.

Poland was never a British colony so English is just a useful foreign language and not the be all and end all of education and work.

a passing mention was too much. They should not have mentioned the election at all.

Just imagine a similar event with the parties reversed....

I sincerely hope that you are not talking about Anders.

Of course I am. For the record, I have no interest in debating him. I'm just saying that when the decision was made to politicize the exhibition they're opening up a very large can of worms. Had they postponed the opening until after the election (or not breathed a word about the election) then I would disapprove of anyone bringing up his record.

I'm in favor of mutual respect. PiS did not show that so they have no cause to complain if people openly disagree with them.

Someone attacked Anders for condemning the Warsaw Uprising.

Only after the event had been turned into a campaign stop. Once the decision to politicize the event was taken (by both W and Andersówna) his record is up for debate.

What does have to do with the exhibition of Anders' mementos?

See above.

Why did they attack Gen. Anders? Or Father Rydzyk?

They attacked neither you silly goose.

They attacked the party that tried to turn what should have been an apolitical event into a campaign stop. And if Father Rydzyk is going to be sucking up tens of millions of zloties from the current government then he's an active political player and as such is fair game for criticism.

Had no one mentioned the elections then I would condemn people who complained about the event (though I still think postponing it a couple of days until after the election would have been _far_ more fitting).

That remark sounds as if in your books KOD-ites can do not wrong

You are soooooo tiresome that's not even in the universe of anything I wrote.

Meanwhile, at the exhibition Mariusz Błaszczak, the minister of the interior said...*

- Jest z nami (...) Anna Maria Anders. Mam nadzieję, że po niedzielnych wyborach do Senatu pani senator Anna Maria Anders, która będzie reprezentowała Suwałki, która będzie reprezentowała ten region ku chwale naszej ojczyzny.

(And here with is (is) AMA. I hope that after the elections sunday to the Senate, Senator AMA who will represent Suwałki, who will represent this region for the glory of our homeland)

Sounds like it was PiS that turned the event into a political campaign stop, no call to get upset when people react to it as a campaign event.
