News / National Foundation to boost Poland's international image [26]

It sounds like an expensive employment program for PiS hangers on to be completely honest....

It does. An expensive vanity project that will ultimately do nothing except make people suspicious of its purpose.

Better to spend the money on sustainable energy.

Macierewicz's sick and perverted obsession

It's not unreasonable. Basically he's pushing some sort of cult of national martyrdom and very consciously turning an accident into part of that.

News / Good-change government raising minimum wage in Poland, cutting SB pensions [213]

I don't mind the wage hike (and it could actually be higher) so much as long as there are restrictions on them doing other paid work, especially as lawyers, while holding public office.

Same with the First Lady thing: most of them (Kwasniewska, Komorowska) had careers that they had to put on hold during their term of office and they are also expected to be a bit of a clothes horse when the President carries out engagements.

A bigger worry is the cronyism and TKM attitude that PiS are known for. Better to make public appointments less vulnerable to political change.

Love / Baby naming in Poland - name chosen by the father? [48]

Well, this is a discussion forum after all...

There are plenty of people in Poland with Polish surnames and a first name from another country as well as vice-versa. Even moe in the UK.

Love / Baby naming in Poland - name chosen by the father? [48]

There's also Damian, Adrian and a few more which are common to both places. If the parents are from different countries it's quite nice to have the first name from one place and the surname from another

That could be a family tradition of his. You can give him an English name; plenty of people in Poland do and it is allowed if one or both parents aren't Polish.

Are you planning on this any time soon?

UK, Ireland / Polish in Britain - will I get decked if I speak Polish to these people? [63]

Like all great authors his work was very carefully edited and proofread, certainly by his wife (a remarkable person), Jessie.

Someone's second language is never quite like their first, and even if someone speaks a beautifully they may not write with quite the same level of proficiency or vice-versa.

I wonder if the OP has also encountered a cultural issue; Poles can be very warm with friends but cold and wary about strangers.

Classifieds / Polish domiciliary carer worker in Bromley area [20]

I think it does. After all, if a company advertised for English only, men only, no blacks, no Irish, no whatever, it would be an issue. The law to allow access to the labour market regardless of nationality was something that ordinary people fought long and hard for.

They may have an exemption under the law (care services often do if they require, say, a male carer, or one with particular experience of a culture, however in that case they're required to mention the specific exemption in the advert.

Classifieds / Polish domiciliary carer worker in Bromley area [20]

I don't think they're looking in Poland. Interesting that they want a Polish worker and don't mention any exceptions under the Equal Opportunities Act relating to language or culture of their service users.

Anyway, screenshotted for forwarding to the relevant public authority.

News / Observance of Warsaw Uprising [17]

Sure I'm. Those veterans are in their late 80' or 90', they might not even been aware what that dude is about to do

That's pretty well the crappest excuse yet here. BTW I know one of those guys, also on the same committee very well indeed. He's over 90, still works, and has a sharper mind than most people half his age.

Not necessarily and you know it.

Actually yes. He spoke as a board member of the Veterans' Associationas is his right and privilege.

Just admit it, Macierewicz dropped yet another bollock.

Backtracking again, I-S?

someone who is on board of the Veteran Association

Are you calling him a liar?

would have signed some petition stating that you are a member of that organization, it doesn't mean that your speak for this organization

A board member? Yes, very much so.

Hello Wissam, As-salamu alaykum. You might give this link to your friend. It's a forum in Polish for people interested in Islam and has a section for people who have reverted or want to revert: muzulmanie.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13&sid=325280ea4f4125d309f94007dd203a93

Law / How to get a Polish Police Certificate from overseas. [5]

Hi Shizuka, the document you need is a "Zaświadczenie o niekaralności" which you can get at any of the KRK points located in regional court buildings. The potential drawback is that you normally have to get this in person. It's possible now to do this online, however (as well as being more expensive) it requires that you have a "verified electronic signature". The embassy of your country in Poland may be able to advise you on this since they would certainly have been asked about it before.

News / Observance of Warsaw Uprising [17]

This year's observance is being marred by an ugly dispute between veterans of the uprising and the military

It absolutely mirrors the PiS fiasco in Poznań. And once again, it's absolutely disrespectful to the people the event is commemorating.

Macierewicz is one of the most bizarre politicians to hold currently elected office in Europe and puts JK's judgement in appointing him Defence Minister very much into question.. At least there's no nuclear button to have his finger on.

Even M Kaczyńska is siding with the veterans against the head of the military and his bizarre death cult obsessions

She at least is self-aware enough to realise that all this not only makes a distasteful joke of the regime but also deters voters.

Nevertheless, we will have another couple of years of them tryiny to turn every single public event in Poland, however unrelated, into a opportunity for him to push his Apel Smolenski.

Work / Krakow - living and working [18]

outside of Krakow i.e. Nowa Huta?

Those rent levels would relate to parts of Kraków like Nowa Huta.

1350 PLN

It isn't very much, that's true, however if you are young; it's doable.
