Classifieds / Polish nurses and medical staff wanted for work in the UK [45]

and if you move from one organisation to another you keep the same email address.

That's a new one. Usually you do not "keep the same address" if it is a work address. Usually the address is cancelled the day you leave.

Doesn't say much for the 'recruitment consultancy', does it...

Off-Topic / Anglo-expat ingrate still insulting Poland's head of state [33]

mouth is and start criticisng Wałęsa, Michnik, Kijowski, Schetyna

Don't be so silly Po, that post surpassed itself in stupidity, ignorance and vitriol. Why should I criticise a public figure I like any more than you criticise the fascistic pond life that you politically favour? Should I only praise the ones you approve of?

Grow up, Po and take a chill pill. Life may have treated you badly however that doesn't mean you have to write things online that read as if they were written by a very bitter, disappointed and unhappy individual.

News / PM Szydło calls V4 summit a success, may be underestimating Old Europe's guile [18]

Leftists and crypto-Marxists are hardly moderate polticians

You are probably the only person who has ever described the conservative Angela Merkel as a "Leftists and crypto-Marxists". She is neither and you are being both silly and deliberately provocative.

And you are still on the losing side; change always triumphs.

self-styled "progressive", iconoclast, family-basher, christophobe and assorted lefty loon, whacko and deviate.

There you go again, Po. Keep up the good work, keep us entertained...

alienating others

You perhaps, who dislikes moderate politicians and favour the religious right. You are however backing a losing horse; otherwise you would moan far less about the ways of the world and all the things you dislike. That and vocally supporting (on here anyway) an entirely negative political party led by a leader who has to sit as a backbencher due to being politically toxic.

Are they still pretending the plane accident at Smolensk was a deliberate bombing by their many rivals or have they managed to shut the bizarre 'National Defence Minister' Macierewicz up yet?

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Poland is hip and very wise to multi cultures.

How would you know?

forced' multi culture is destroying cultures

Don't be so silly.

Very sad to see you advocating racism, but not really a surprise.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

I would like to say that Poles are right to be racists

No, you are wrong on that point. And people here, the educated ones and the decent people, aren't generally as primitive as you would like them to be.

Life / Living Expenses in Krakow [42]

accountant. Is this a sufficient amount to live in krakow?

You can live on that, but not a luxury life. Renting a small flat out of the city centre will take about half that salary.

UK, Ireland / POLISH MAN 25 MURDERED IN LEEDS UK [19]

Leeds is OK. The incident happened just off Armley Town Street, one of the more rough and ready, not to say socially deprived bits where quite frankly all sorts happens.

The threads shouldn't be merged though (unless the title changes) since the incident outside the pub in post #17 wasn't a murder, nobody died.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Yes, decent people have to make sure that the racists stay out of political office. Fortunately these false starts serve as a wake-up call for electoral moderation and liberal ethics in the public domain.

I suspect Merkel (rather right-wing herself but at least she did the right thing in the refugee crisis) will be around on the political scene for a long time to come.

Life / Cost of living in Katowice, Poland [53]

I have been offered 5000 gross a month. I was told by HR that this is about 3550 net, is this correct? Is it enough to support a single person living in Katowice?

That net amount is fairly close to accurate and is a little above average for a private sector job. For a first or second job it's not bad for Poland. It's more than a lot of people get however you would need to be careful about your day to day expenses - as an expat from the Netherlands it's likely that you would have higher expectations about disposable income, living conditions etc than most youngish people in Katowice(as well as extra expenses like visits home.

Probably worth doing, especially as living in another country broadens the mind and is a good thing to do.

I would suggest taking Dominic B's comments with a very large pinch of salt. He only really posts here to try and deter people from taking jobs in Poland - you may like to confirm this by a quick search.

Food / Golabki - Oven or Stove top [11]

Always stove-top (slow-cooker is the same thing); never oven. Always a layer of cabbage leaves at the bottom of the pan (they get burnt so the gołąbki don't). Rice is optional; I've had traditional gołąbki both with it and without it. If you don't use rice, use another grain or even bulka tarta, almost anything will do. I use pearl barley. Fresh tomato sauce is pretty well non-negotiable - nothing else really suits.

Don't forget to blanch the cabbage leaves first to soften them.

Classifieds / ANY FOREIGNER (NOT POLISH) FAMILY ADVOCATE IN WARSAW [39]

1. Regarding visits and did I tried to kidnapped baby????

This is something you need to discuss with a very good (sadly they are usually expensive) lawyer.

If your ex is making malicious false allegations about kidnap, it looks like she is a toxic person. Unfortunately in Poland, it's pretty well expected that people lie in court and if that lie is presented in a plausible way it could cause you severe problems.

With courts anywhere (and very much so in PL) you have to expect the worst and hope for the best - a good lawyer however can make all the difference.

Life / Money Advice for expat in Poland: better using English bank card for transactions or Polish bank account? [2]

Should we begin life in Poland by just using our English bank card for transactions in shops etc

Yes, but be careful about charges for overseas use. Have a look on moneysavingexpert; they compare cards for using abroad. Basically MasterCard is always better than Visa and the best card to use by far is the Halifax MasterCard.

Or should we leave all of our savings in a UK bank account and transfer an "amount" every month to our Polish Bank to cover us for the upcoming month then use our Polish bank account.

This is usually better. If you have a Polish account that receives GBP (most do) already, Transfer it, withdraw the cash as you need it and change at a Kantor if the rate is much better than the bank. If you don't have a Polish bank account yet, use a MasterCard or even better, bring plenty of cash and change it here.

It's generally a good idea to keep your UK bank account, especially if you have any income or payments to make over there.

Law / Do I need any licenses or such to sell non-alcoholic drinks in Poland? [13]

I see. So if it's just me, I need to register as a dime trader instead of creating a business.

It's actually much the same in Poland - there are still quite a few steps to go through, registering at City hall, tax, office of statistics, bank account etc.

I need to pay a flat fee at a "farmers market". I

That's true and the flat fee is as I remember very low, though I'd point out that those markets are a lot less classy than a farmers' market ;-)

Farmers' markets do exist (there's a good one in Wroclaw sometimes and a seasonal one before Christmas in pl. Wilsona, Warsaw) but they're relatively new and I'm not sure who organises them. They do seem well organised.

Law / Do I need any licenses or such to sell non-alcoholic drinks in Poland? [13]

Does the business have to be based in Poland?

In theory no, however it would be bureaucratic overkill to register a UK company and then register a presence in Poland which you would need to do in order to get the pitch.

As for the pitch, where do I go to do that

In Warsaw it depends what sort of street it's on. Depends whether it's on a bus route or not. For one you go to the department of roads and highways and for the other to the city hall (easier, hence most of the people who sell veg on street stalls do it just round the corner from a bigger road). Outside big cities the rules may be different.

and can it be done with just basic Polish skills?

You would need a Polish speaker to help you through the process. My ex (who is Polish) did it once and it took a while. It's a little easier in one of those big markets (Wołumen, Rożyckiego, Braci Wagów if it's still there) where you just pay a flat fee to the organisers, however you would still need to be registered as a sole trader (plenty of information on the various steps to do that here in this forum).

Law / Do I need any licenses or such to sell non-alcoholic drinks in Poland? [13]

Did that mean that I could pretty much make a stand and sell drinks without anybody bothering me anywhere in Poland?

Definitely no. Looker is talking about an alcohol off-sales licence; you mean something different.

If you want to be a street trader you will first need to register a business and secondly apply for a pitch (with detailed plans in the correct format showing where exactly you want to have it) as well as complying with any environmental health regulations that may pertain.
