UK, Ireland / London's POSK smeared with anti-Polish grafitti [150]

You made an idiotic statement about who the graffiti author is

No, I raised a possibility. I'm not saying for sure that the hate crimes are hoaxes, but that's how things often work out in the US.

I assume you've never heard of hate hoaxes. By now, in the US the default assumption would be that a "hate crime" was committed by the "victim". Put "hate hoax" into google and you'll find lots of examples.

But that's the US, I don't know if it works that way in the UK (yet).

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

Just think if Scotland picked up the London banking sector which is 35% of UK GDP, Wow.

And then if rainbow unicorns with wings started flying around and giving everybody ponies! Wouldn't that be wonderful?

threatening to impose a whisky and haggis export ban.

I thought they were threatening to _lift_ the existing haggis export ban and were going to start sending tons of it to England....

Question is does the EU want another poor non strategic nation like Scotland in The Union

Some of the current problems of the EU are precisely the "accept anyone!" policy.

do you think that Scotland would pass any of the entrance tests.

Would an independent Scotland want to use the Euro (fatal pseudo-currency union)?

Does anyone feel that Scotland would be a worthwhile member of the EU

Not especially. And if an independent Scotland joined Schengen then it would have to be a 100% controlled land border (a first for Britain since....?)
People don't especially want to move to Scotland but there are tens of millions in Africa and the middle east and the Indian sub-continent who would like to live in England.... England is already the most crowded country in Europe. Does anybody seriously want to see the population of England creep over 100 million? 200 million?

Would Scotland agree to British style border controls? Would Scots travelling south want to exchange their euros for sterling?

History / 60th anniversary of the Poznan uprising! [60]

Today is the 60th anniversary of peaceful protests against the communist government in the People's Republic that were met with savage government violence killing dozens of people.

Arguably the first major popular revolt against the Soviet installed communist system behind the Iron Curtain it preceded the much more widely known Budapest uprising later that year.

It was the beginning of the end of any kind of legitmacy for the communist government though it took over 30 years before it collapsed under its own inefficency.

The Russified Varsovians dislike the Prussified Poznanians (the dislike is mutual) yet it was Poznan that saw the Wielkopolska uprising after WWI that enlarged the borders of the interwar republic and it was Poznan that first fought back against the communists.

Now of course, Poznan is one of the most prosperous cities in Poland (thanks to better than average local government more often than not) and very westward looking and positive about Europe (not just in the form of subsidies).

Discuss!

(yes I was channeling my innter Polonius with the casual disdain for certain.... elements of the Polish landscape, it's no wonder that brave Poznan is, among the major cities of Poland, still the least enamoured of the current governing party....)

News / Good-change government raising minimum wage in Poland, cutting SB pensions [213]

an annulment looks at marriage from the perspective of the Gospel and of Church doctrine

So why isn't physical abuse a large enough violation of Church doctrine to dissolve a marriage?

Children are even better off if a mismatched couple grin and bear it for the family's sake

To some extent this is true. There are probably too many frivolous divorces. But still, if one spouse is regularly abusing (physcially or verbally) the other then it is probably better for the non-abusive spouse to take the kids and leave.

the principles of the Catholic faith and that incldues the insolubility of sacramental marriage

First, it's adorbs! He's talking to himself pretending to be someone he isn't!! Cutes!!!

Secondly, either sacremental marriage is insoluble or not. Annulment seems like wanting to have your cake (insoluble bonds created by the church) and eat it too (looksies! it never happened!!!)

Sloppy thinking, plain and simple.

News / Anti-Corruption Bureau investigates Warsaw city hall [69]

Many countries make do with a Supreme Court and that should suffice in Poland well.

More nonsense in the great Polonius style we all love and mercilessly ridicule.

Face it, your'e a party hack who wants rule by party leader, just like the commies you pretend to despise.

This means that the RCC states that a particular marriage has never been valid, so it has not existed really

magic thinking, not surprising, but still magic thinking

the practical result is the same, the divorcees/anullees can get married again, annulment is just a way for the RC church to pretend it doesn't believe in divorce

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

There is a huge debate going on now, as to whether parliament, or the people, really want this. The first clearly doesn't.

What parliament wants is irrelevant. There was a referendum.

What the people want is, at present, assumed to be the result of the referendum.

Except that he was a lame duck president, universally unpopular and about to lose an election.

Not universally unpopular (he always had the hardcore PiS block) but yeah, most likely to lose the election. Which brings up a point.... Russia had nothing to gain from engineering a plane crash and neither did anyone connected with the PO government. Who had something to gain? Who's in power now?

That's right. I'm halway convinced it was an inside PiS job - sacrifice the unpopular president for a return to power down the road.

No, annulment is not divorce.

So people who have a marriage annulled aren't divorced?

this is the first step in annuling (cancelling) a church marriage

In other words annulment is the way that the RC church gives people divorces.

Let's not pretend there's anything but a name and/or technical bureacratic BS distinction between civil divorce and annulment.

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

The stay crowd simply argued Britain should become more involved to fix problems

The problem is that the technocrats in Brussels are not interested in fixing problems (they think the only problem is they don't have enough power to override troublesome decisions by the plebs), they're interested in social meddling and unrealistic regulations.

It's a little sad, the EU had its day (and might yet again) but at present there's no upside for a western prosperous country.

Thought it would be close but that we we would stay in.

I thought that the polls were probably underreporting support for leaving and that the result would be larger for leave.

Hopefully, this will send a message to the EU leadership that business-as-usual needs to change.

Perhaps Poles will have to make do without some luxuries they have become accustomed to in the last few years

Is this Polly again? Are you so ashamed of your past posts that you're reduced to sock-puppeting?

And maybe the Polish people will 'make do without some luxuries' when a backbencher MP makes do without free helicopter rides....

Just the sort of vile comment we've all grown to expect from you

Spending his whole life with repressed feelings of shame, the idea of people not feeling shame about sex fills him with rage and he obsesses about how to punish them.

If so, then impress 'em with some homemade bigos

I don't think an English guy is going to impress Polish people with his versions of Polish food. And I also rather doubt if he can cook...

Feedback / Stupid limitation on the quotation length [20]

Only one way to find out ;)

I tried once, using the ham-fisted MON's attempt to make it about smolensk as a starting point from which discussion of the uprising and related issues could take place. It got attached to a thread about monthly Smolensk observances.

If discussion is not wanted, then there's no reason to offer.
