Real Estate / Polish building plans [16]

definitely metric. are there lines to indicate the distance? most plans today measure the distance in centimetres.

Life / Poles and the temperatures they heat their homes [36]

I have never ever in my life ever had a sore throat from drinking an iced drink. Never. There is no medical proof to say that this happens. Sore throats are passed from viruses and bacteria. And that is it. There must be a logical explanation to the reason.

I almost always get a sore throat after having an iced drink. I am not ill prior to that, but get a fever, lose my voice etc. about a day after

there is another reason. you do not get sick from drinking a cold drink. it just isn't physically possible.

the only way drinking cold or eating cold would make you sick is if the food had bacteria or virus on it. that is it. colds, sore throats and other respiratory infections are caused by viruses that have been transmitted via human contact.

drinking cold does not give you a sore throat but your already existing sore throat can me aggravated by drinking high acidic drinks like orange juice.

so your friend didn't get sick from being a smart arse.

Life / Poles and the temperatures they heat their homes [36]

I get stared at for not wearing hats, gloves, or layer upon layer of over warm clothes, but almost never get ill, whereas friends who dress up like Eskimos, neck those pointless rutinoscorbin things and wear slippers, pyjamas etc are przeziebiony throughout the winter.

me too. I get the dirty looks from the grandmother who know everything, how my kids don't have hats or mitts on when it is 2 C but yet they haven't had any sickness for years. I don't mean a runny nose- this is not a sickness in my world.....yet I know if Polish kids have the sniffles they have to stay in bed and drink only hot liquids while Babcia soothes them.

Honestly, I almost think that Poles (grandmother and grandmother in law) prefer to have the children ill- it gives them purpose and something to gossip about.

I have warm boots and warm jackets. maybe this is why I don't understand the layers. If you don't dress warmly in my part of Canada- you can get frostbite or hypothermia. I prefer the warm jacket.

I understand what you are saying but seriously, the weather is not to be feared. dressing appropriately is key. I am from a city in Canada where it goes from -45 with windchill in the winter to +45 in the summer with humidex. Yes this is celcius. A good jacket and warm boots makes all the difference.

Putting children in tights from September to June does not let their bodies adapt to the weather. It doesn't prevent them from getting sick--it makes them sick- their bodies can't adjust.

I don't need to tell the ridiculous stories about Poles and the cold----everybody on here probably has one or more to share.

When I was in my late teens, early twenties I was one of those girls that didn't dress appropriately---but it usually involved a night of clubbing.

Funny thing is we as a family don't get sick. We eat healthy, dress for the weather- not overdress- but properly dress and regular colds and flus don't hit us. I have never put two layers of clothing on either one of my kids. Never. They always wore regular clothes and if it is cold out they wear snow suits, etc. no tights underneath and no 3 layers of shirts.

absolutely true. part of the reason Polish children are always sick. we haven't even turned our furnace on yet- but everybody in my husbands office has it on. I can't breath or sleep or even function when it is that hot.

Law / Famous brands which had to give up Poland [11]

you are talking about fake food- not real food. good thing they have disappeared. I heard there is a Mexican restaurant that just opened next to the Mexican embassy in Warsaw- that is what you want---not process garbage with chemical additives.

Real Estate / Rural places to live near Warsaw and other housing questions. [9]

check where the schools are and judge from there. Most of them are in the southern end of the city. Piaseczno is congested with traffic. The main road, Pulawska, is always busy. The problem is that the infrastructure, like most of Warsaw, can't accommodate the development.

stay away from Piaseczno. It is a clusterfcuk on a good day. on a bad day it is horror.

I also think that you should make the decision based on how much you can afford. Like a previous poster said- Wilanow, Powsin and Konstancin are good areas but they are also full of expats which drive the rental prices through the roof. There is a house close to me that rents for 22,000 pln per month. no joke.

Perhaps an apartment (large one) in Ursynow would suit you. It is on the metro line and has loads of amenities.

Food / Organic fruit and vegetable - delivery (Warsaw) [33]

there is also an organic market on Zelazna in an old factory---can't remember the name. It is supposed to be really good.

The truth is the price of pesticides in poland have increased by about 500% over the last seven years.

and this is one of the main reasons I am searching for certified organic now. a few years ago I was happy to buy produce from the grocers, not now. GMO has been approved- with limited uses, but that is only step one.

Two years from now we will see it change even more.

Food / Organic fruit and vegetable - delivery (Warsaw) [33]

These are most probably not parsnips but root of parsley. Parsnips are popular in Canada but unknown in Poland.

It is a white carrot kind of thing.

I would hit Stara Papiernia market but I work on Saturdays- so it is a no go. And my husband is a tool in the kitchen so no help there. For our family-- the delivery is the best option. I am not worried about them being fake organic- I am pretty certain it is. The supplier ships to countries such as Italy and Germany.

Like the others said- I would be more worried about so called organic from south american countries. Even North America and Western Europe. I was reading a story of a farmer in the states who will not apply for organic status even though her farming is all natural because of the contaminents in the wind. she has a farm next to a few other farms and they use pesticides which travel via wind on to her crops- so even though she doesn't use them her crops are affected.

I live close to farm land in Warsaw- I have yet to see any chemicals used by farmers. All there stuff is grown organically--they still pick by hand!

Food / Organic fruit and vegetable - delivery (Warsaw) [33]

ok- then do it. two large leeks, 3 celeriac, 4 large onions, 1 eggplant, 1 large bunch of kale, 1 salad mix with edible flowers, 1 rukiew wodna (I don't know what that is-watercress?) bunch of chives, bunch of parsley, net of potatoes, net of pairs, net of apples, 10 parsnips and 14 carrots.

I am quite pleased.

Food / Organic fruit and vegetable - delivery (Warsaw) [33]

dunno, the farm label is certified organic. I am happy with it. I am paying for the convenience. I got a good amount of food and it was delivered. I simply can't run around to 10 different places for my shopping.

Food / Organic fruit and vegetable - delivery (Warsaw) [33]

I bought the family box. I got one eggplant, two soup ingredients (I can't remember what they are called, a few carrots, few parsnips, celeriac, you know) two leeks, 1 pack rukola, one pack of something green, mixed salad, a net of pears, a net of apples, a net of potatoes. 5 large onions, chives, parsley, kale.

I paid 101 pln plus tip for delivery. I am thrilled. I think it was totally worth the price. I actually don't think the price was too outrageous. If you go into any grocery store the organic selection is much less and the prices are more expensive- and no delivery and they are not local.

I am also curious as to what they offer during the winter months. Probably loads of root veg.

I found an organic fruit and veg delivery that supplies produce from local farmers. They only operate in Warsaw right now. We got ours last night. Great stuff. Highly recommend. vegebox.pl

Real Estate / Polish Nieruchomoƛci (real estate) commission madness! [25]

you are easy prey. the agent gets a hit from you and from the landlord. Unless this is your dream flat- I would keep looking and see if you can find something on your own. try oferty.net many landlords don't want to deal with agents. they are a joke in this country.

I will never accept paying 50% of the rent to an agent for opening a door.

the residential system in Poland is a clusterfcuk and needs a complete overhaul.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Apartment prices are going down slowly but surely.

ha ha ha ha----still not a bubble!!

and nobody ever said they were not going down. But a slow decrease (slowly but surely, your words) is not a bubble.
