Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Another riddle in the second photo: what is it?

Something Smolensky? I see what looks like the end of the word kĊ‚amstwa and the smolensk crazies are the only ones I can think of who'd mix flowers and invective that way....

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

it seems you dont really understand what self-learning online is.

Neither do you sperg brain. Public education has many more purposes than simply teaching children things.

It's a necessary aspect of socialization (for those whose brains work normally) so that when they become adults they will be able to hold down jobs and take part in normal social relations.

Those who don't have that experience (esp through home schooling) experience social trauma and have major problems in orienting themselves in society.

How is watching videos going to teach people how to follow instructions or learn to work with and compromise with others (along with many other things that schools give children)?

autodidacts who swallow ideas in an unstructured way from weird websites

Sounds like Dirk (without the autodidact part... he's clearly not learned much).

History / Why is Poland weaker than Russia? [390]

Russia is on a long-term economic, political and social decline.

No Krym nash! (I'm wondering if that refrain is starting to sound a bit hollow.... things have been just going downhill since that little adventure, both in the Crimea and in Russia as well)

They have no recipe how to make Poland stronger

Poland is already pretty strong with much lower levels of social stratification and corruption and is integrated into European and NATO defense structures....

how to make Russia weaker

Russia makes itself weaker, the Russian people have tremendous potential with massive amounts of (as yet unrealized) educational and cultural and social capital but tend to throw it all away through their inability to govern themselves by any means but tyranny and corruption... then they try to make up for that with a belligerent attitude towards other countries. So sad...

Well the Americans are all in bed so we are spared their wisdom

au contraire!!!!

PiS's attitude makes some sense. It knows that large numbers of teachers will never vote for them while they're very scared of the upcoming European elections which is why JK is making promises to their feckless base in an effort to make sure they can tear themselves away from the tv or shopping malls (aren't the elections the last sunday in the month?!) and make it to the polling station.

The funniest is of course the cow and pig payments.... the sweet aroma of flop sweat is in the air...

Of course the handouts for the PiS base mean that needed expenditures elsewhere can't be made (especially after the expensive educational reform boondoggle) the government could waste tons of money on that but pay teachers?

I'm with the teachers %110!

So, either you have to learn how to live as a good neighbour

You first! When has Russia ever been a good neighbor to any country unfortunate enough to find itself in close proximity to it?

Russia hasn't fundamentally changed since the tsars... it's all rule by tyrants (whether tsar, party secretary or whatever job Putin's given himself) and a docile serf population that suffers what it must from the predatory elite of the country...

Please stick to the topic, everyone

the right of self-determination

Do they have the right of self-determination now? What about the oldest residents the Tatars? Hearing an apologist for the Russian government talk about self-determination is hilarious....

Intersex. The I in LGBTQI...

Where does the A go? Shouldn't there be and A in there somewhere?

What does the dna say? Unless there's no Y then... this is hype for headlines and not a real story...

there was a dna analysis, if he were female it would have shown up there.... best bet is that he was male with some outlier secondary characteristics more typical of females

another transgender LGBTQI+ Pole!

nonsense those are modern identities that people of the time would not recognize nor necessarily feel any affinity for...

my own idea is that this is part of the ideological war of erasing Europe's past... depsicable and (I bet) lousy science.

What about Pozen

Posen in German... and Russia already tried to split up Poland with Germany ihn 1939... Second time's the charm? 1939 is another reason that Polish people don't trust the Russian state which has never brought Poland anything but misery.

Russia can be reliable partner for Germany

Russia is a pusher and Germany is the addict (Russian gas) not really a partnership.

Your trust or mistrust (if you a real and not a "plastic" Pole) is not a problem of Russia

I'm not Polish but I live in Poland.

not interested in Polish people prosperity.

I'm very interested in Polish prosperity and Russia has never contributed to Polish posterity, quite the opposite.

Crimean oblast

Soviet gobbledeegook made null and void by the Budapest memorandum, an international agreement which Russia violated (Russians breaking promises... imagine my shock!).
And russia has singlehandedly ensured that no country will ever willingly give up nuclear weapons again (as doing so is an invitation to heavily armed neighbors to invade).

The Russian state is simply not a reliable partner and cannot be counted on to honor its word. That's why the Baltics, Poland (and now Ukraine) don't trust it.

The residents might not agree.

Who knows? It was under foreign military occupation when the 'referendum' was carried out... The fact is that something like a fifth of the population has no reliable access to safe drinking water and agriculture is dying through salinization of the soil... yeah, they had hoped to create a land bridge through the bvllsh1t Novorossija project but Putin has ended up being one of the architects of modern Ukrainian nationalism so.... not a smart move.

20% of Ukraine's industrial base.

At a time when industrial bases are less important (and a friend from the area says it's the Ukrainian equivalent of Radom...)

Crimea? Any fool with a map could see that it's a useless white elephant without a secure water supply which only Ukraine can deliver, so...

Eastern Ukraine? Essentially useless land with the least social capital in the country?

Invading Poland in 1939?

Occupation of the Baltic states?

Katyn?

Budapest in 1956?

Prague in 1968?

Poles and baltic states population constantly told that russians are coming

Well in living memory the Russians (in the form of the SSSR) had come to both (with massively disastrous effects) so... why shouldn't they worry about an unrepentant Russian government that acts like an aggrieved infant?

Land with brainwashed population

No brainwashing is ever needed to convince populations that the Russian state is not a good thing... just direct experience with it has always been enough.

Work / Diversity in Poland especially in workplace [90]

There's no reason to keep those in wheelchairs out of the workforce.... nor any reason to force them into jobs they can't do. I'm all for expanding opportunity but programed diversity tends to lead to dumb things like quotas. so.... blech

diversity in the workplace (which is mostly not about skin colour or culture)

then what is it about? again, define diversity...

yet another thread about immigration.

Again, through what other means is the idea relevant in Poland?

Well the left have become completely co-opted by the neoliberal consensus and have become fanatical in their support of the financial sector and liquid capital.

The American scholar Philip Mirowski writes about how neoliberals find ways of pushing their agenda across the political divide so that both left and right end up arguing for neoliberal goals (which do not include the well-being of the working class).

For leftists this meant convincing them that anything less than open borders is deeply racist... so now American liberals are pushing for the economic disenfranchisement of American workers in the name of anti-racism (first recognized as a modern religion by the great British novelist P.D. James).

he current 'crisi' isn't a crisis. It's a beginning.

Well Africa's population is set to quadruple over the next century and even the poorest in Europe have lifestyles that a massive majority of Africans can't dream of achieving at home (given the persistent inability of Africans to create stable and prosperous societies). So... things don't look good for Europe in the long term....

people had better get used to colleagues who look a bit different to them

The looks are the least of it. The values created and enforced by religion and culture are the far bigger problem and not a single European do-gooder has found a way of getting large numbers of migrants from Africa and the Middle East to embrace European values...

My personal opinion is that large scale immigration is not needed anywhere... except by employers who want a large army of interchangeable and disposable employees without many rights...

They say it is good for the economy

A lot of that fudges the data, they say that places with lots of immigration have great economic growth... but don't control for the fact that immigrants go to places where the economy is already doing well... Venezuela is not getting many immigrants these days... if only the immigrants would go there and revitalize their economy!

They say immigrants take only those jobs they cannot be filed by locals

My impression is that immigrants take jobs that are so low paying that locals don't want to do them (again, open borders is a Koch bros scam to keep wages as low as possible).

Of course it's normal for there to be some movement of people.... but large scale immigration is a sign that something is going wrong in both the source and destination countries...

almost every thread here ends up about immigration.

Well the topic is about diversity in Poland... who else is Poland going to get diverse except through immigration? And wouldn't it behoove those who are cheerleading non-European immigration to Poland to look at how the experience has gone for other European countries?

Are are countries simply supposed to create policy based on ideology divorced form real world experience?

My idea is that a lot depends on country/culture of origin but it's very hard to talk about, one the one side there are the 'see no evil/hear no evil/speak no evil' monkeys like... you and on the other are the nazi-larping edgelords like dirk...

Does anyone want to weigh up the relative advantages and disadvantages of migration from (say) Vietnam vs North Africa in Europe? In a sober manner? (I'm not going to hold my breath)

giving the locals the opportunity to widen their horizon and learn something

So you're all in favor of a few million Americans moving to China so that the Chinese can broaden their horizons and learn something?

The sad reality though is that these people hate anyone with a passion who is not white and/ or Christian

Yeah, the hate is a drag.... yet I've still yet to see any real proof that large scale non-European immigration to Europe helps either the local European population or the migrants themselves... no hate, just why keep running a failed experiment?

Whites, blacks and indigenous people in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest?

And two of those are not-native (in the same rainforest)

Humans seem to be the only species that opposes diversity amongst its members

Are you kidding? For man species a new dominant male kills any offspring he can... .how is that diverse?

Again, what are the benefits of putting people together who can't easily eat together or socialize together and who have diametrically opposed views about things like the importance of law vs family loyalty?

walks into a rainforest

not that much human diversity in a rainforest... (or most other natural environments)

the problem with 'diversity is wonderful!' rhetoric is that a) diversity isn't really defined... b) no concrete benefits (apart from better fast food options) are ever given...
