News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

Sokrates:
He does not, he does the same thing Germans and French are doing, his mistake is he's doing it openly.

Do you think that he did it effectively while in power?

would you do better in his place convex - against the mightiest wealthiest and most influential states of the EU - don't you notice this (perhaps still subtle - because not outwardly spoken) notion that what is good for Germany and France is good for Europe

That's what makes him come across as a populist instead of a leader

well in my view a political leader with noble goal can possibly revert to populism - a populist in my understanding is a very specific guy who uses his populistic rhetorics mainly to his own (or his party) benefit

Language / Why when spelling Polish names abroad, Polish letters are ignored? [68]

Antek_Stalich

Before anyone puts the complaint on spelling the name such as "Walesa", we should start calling Muenchen the right name, and we shall get rid of names such as Padwa, Rzym, Londyn, Nowy Jork and the like.

bloody hell - you are not serious, are you?

when there are so many people out there who don't even inflect "easy" surnames such as Wiśniewski or Kowal.

surprisingly enough it is Catholic priests who lead this avandgarde of the future :P

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

Why not make it a plank to leave the EU instead of whining and moaning about it? That would put him into a much more credible position instead of looking like a populist stooge.

btw don't you believe in a strategy of changing the EU from within - is Poland only a subject of the EU ?? - is not even moaning a way to show other partners that we don't like this or that in the EU (sure there are better strategies if your aim is to change something or stop some change)

gumishu:
Kaczyński is not an euro-scepthic - he can see the benefits of the EU clearly but can also see dangers in many aspects

I see it more as wanting your cake and eating it too.

very round statement - but hmm care to elaborate - btw I don't think Kaczyński has this attitude toward the EU (he is a very reasonable guy in many matters, I even doubt he believes very much in some of his strongests rhetorics)

Sokrates:
The thing i like about Kaczyński is that he recognizes EU as a joke, every country tugs in their own direction and so should we, the thing i dont like about him is that he says so openly.

Why not make it a plank to leave the EU instead of whining and moaning about it? That would put him into a much more credible position instead of looking like a populist stooge.

you have misunderstood Sokrates, convex - he meant that Kaczyński is calling things their real name in Europe (even if sometimes exaggeratedly) and it is not in line with the official EU language and notions (important sensitive matters are not discussed publicly in Brussels) EU and espacially Germany within EU are pressing specific Political Correctness - for various reasons Kaczyński would not or could not conform

Kaczyński is not an euro-scepthic - he can see the benefits of the EU clearly but can also see dangers in many aspects

gumishu, I don't know what you are doing, but ja jadę do Rostocku. :-)

the thing is poeple talk like that as in your sentence and it makes sense especially for those complex names - and I guess this is somehow sanctioned linguistically - however if I do omitted d'Ampezzo I would say do Cortiny

btw many even simple German place names tend not to be declined - jadę do Rostock, jadę do Bonn (Bonn because it happens to be neuter in Polish), jadę do Tegel - only a handful German names get declined (appart from those who are declined after a better know pattern - Hamburg, Hamburga, Hamburgu - Naumburg, Naumburga, Naumburgu)

one comparison can be striking - say Temellin is a German (or French) place name - it won't be declined then (unless very familiar) (w Temellin)

still if it were a place in Czech Rep, Slovakia, former Yougoslavia or Hungary we (at least I) would definitely decline it (w Temellinie)

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

It was with regards to two Polish representatives being at the summit. Remember the one about the financial crisis where Rostowski ended up giving up his seat at the table...

yeah I can remember it but vaguely - tbh I don't know why Kaczyński insisted he should go there too - and PO made much fuss and put obstacles (wouldn't give him a plane to fly there) to Kaczyński demanding presence in Brussels - ironically on the day of the flight Tusk's plane broke down and he had to fly on the board of the plane given to Kaczyński

i also remembered a totally failed Kaczyński PR stunt to pat Tusk in the conference hall - Kaczyński was a weak actor and made an idiot of himself in the act (in front of the cameras)

the thing i dont like about him is that he says so openly.

the story has two dimensions - one is that Kaczyński is not a best politician/diplomat - the other there is a need to voice such things in Poland perhaps in a more blunt language - because of too much blind-euroenthusiasm and because there are plenty people in Poland who think the same and they can rally around politicians who use such statements

well, maybe it is true that he did that because he was pissed off by the article - but IIRC the official reason was some kind of health condition (diarrhoea?)- how do we know that it wasn't that way - because Gazeta Wyborcza instisted?

Right... That's where deputizing those duties come into play.

yes, it would be a very good solution - perhaps the prime minister could go in case of president's illness - now it is an interesting story to find out if the prime minister would be accepted at such a meeting

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Most na rzece Kwai"? Do you have any problem with it? "Most na Kwaju?". It boils down to familiarity with a name.

not only to the familiarity - I would agree to some extent the Kwaj (Kway) would be the case (if Kwaj was familiar then we would say Most na Kwayu) if unfamiliar 'Most na rzece Kway.)

but Kwai is a different thing - similar to 'tupi' i guess - 'tupi' does not decline (to tupi, tego tupi) - and similarly Kwai wouldn't (as it ends in i - not a regular ending for a Polish noun)

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

If I had a power of effecting people's minds and habits I would suggest to live the surnames and geographical names alone; no inflection please.

bad idea - a jadę do Rzym, jadę do Moskwa, - no regulation will make people talk like that boletus
jeśli spotkałem się z Jackiem Dukajem to dlaczego spotkałem się z Jack Straw zamiast z Jackiem Straw -
btw - if you have a name like Pat Robertson (which could be either male or female Polish declination can often show the gender

Spotkałem się z Patem Roberstonem. vs Spotkałem się z Pat Roberston. if you used nominal form for a male Pat Robertso many people would think you met a female eventually

and it is sometimes important to know the gender to use the correct grammatical forms that should reflect the gender

I've seen foreign womens' names declined both on polish internet pages and in print. In Poland.

some do get declined - Alicia Huggins, Alicii Huggins (gen, acc, loc, dat), z Alicią Huggins (inst.), Alicio Huggins (voc. however rare or strange even to the native speakers) - you should be able to see the pattern

Camilla Parker, Camilli Parker, Camillą Parker

Wiera £awrowa - dat Wierze £awrowej - gen Wiery £awrowej - acc Wierę £awrową loc Wierze £awrowej ins Wierą £awrową voc Wiero £awrowa

Martha Fonseca - acc Marthę Fonseca/e gen Marthy Fonseca/i dat Marcie Fonseca/e loc Marcie Fonseca/e ins Marthą Fonseca/ą voc Martho Fonseca

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

I think he is a very crafty player.

he is not - he makes scores of political mistakes - often divulging on issues and in situations it is best not to - hardly a good politician

media are equally a threat of democracy - it is actually media+PO cooperation that creates monster out of Kaczyński - media are a threat to democracy because they paint false pictures, manipulate, disinform, misinform, twist and bend :p - the media created hate of Kaczyńskis creates a split in the society the size never seen in this country after the war - it is not only Kaczyński that is hated, it is mostly all who support him or even dare to criticize the current govenment (no matter how good your arguement is) - you will notice that if you read various political sites and the comments of the readers

History / Why did Russia attack Poland in WW2? [178]

the Soviet army was so concentrated in the border area that it is very possible they wanted to attack first - Viktor Suvorov claims that after the German offensive started (July 22) one of the first orders from Moscow to the troops was to destroy sealed 'in case of war' orders - he claims further that those new orders never reached some fighting troops and some officers knowing the new orders were desperate for guidelines and opened the envelopes only to see that the orders called for an offensive actions and were worthless

some other points show that the Russians were preparing for an assault on Germans themselves - the share of their air power they have kept in the vicinity of the border - Germans destroyed couple of thousands Russian planes on the ground in the first days of Barbarossa - I wouldn't be surprised they have thus eliminated 2/3 of the total Soviet air power - also the biggest tank battle until the famous Kurks battle in 1943 took place sone 20-40 kilometers from the present day Polish-Ukrainian border which was then German-Soviet border

if you want to defend a country you should have deeply set defences and reserves - the Soviets had little in terms of that though they sure could afford that

History / Why did Russia attack Poland in WW2? [178]

If Russia was with the Allies why would they back stab Poland.
Was it for revenge or Coal.

because you need to learn the history of the second world war more thoroughly - including it's background (btw the history is taught quite thoroughly in Polish schools)

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

Canceling his Weimar Triangle meeting because he got his panties into a twist over an article in a private newspaper would be one.

well, maybe it is true that he did that because he was pissed off by the article - but IIRC the official reason was some kind of health condition (diarrhoea?)- how do we know that it wasn't that way - because Gazeta Wyborcza instisted?

The debacle at the EU summit...

well, why a debacle actually - if you care to explain
- it proved Poland could not force its position and had noone on her side (except international political scientists including Germans) for reasons obscure to me - perhaps there was some fault on Polish diplomacy's side - I don't know any details) - so Poland went for a compromise that would be advantageous for Poland even if only in a short term - had Poland chose to object to the whole Treaty thing it would definitely end up ostracised a possibly suffer other difficulties in the EU (their were voices to get Poland rid of the EU before the summit - perhaps it was just a rhetorical black-mail but who knows now)

btw if you had seen the man in an interview with Tomasz Lis once you wouldn't call him insane - he was eloquent, intelligent, self-assured and calm enough to dominate Lis (Lis is not a Kaczyński lover as you probably know) - sadly I haven't found the interview in youtube

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

I live in Poland
Personaly i think Kaczynski is insane

I personally find many Kaczyński haters insane (after reading many comments in various places in the internet) - and most who vote against him only have a loose connexion to Polish political realities (like only read headlines of articles on the web) - (of course there are plenty of people who are afraid of Kaczyński for very specific reasons - people like Sławomir Misiak, Beata Sadowska, Mirosław Drzewiecki ect are only the tip of the iceberg of those who are afraid for a reason - not because someone told them that Kaczyński is evil

I guess the younger generations are better at making these silly declensions with foreign names.

not really - I am not that young firstly - secondly true younger generations do have problems with declensions of foreign names (and with ortography in general)

Pata Richardsona (gen of Pat Richardson).

should be Johnny'ego Deppa - you only use apostrophes when the original foreigh name ends in a mute 'e' or 'y'

as in Clark - gen Clarka; Clarcke - Clarcke'a

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

in Polish one can be completely wrong-footed ... ;).

is Alex Scunthorpe definitely a male in English?

For example, for most of us a name ending in -a means the person is a woman .

Pata Richardsona (gen of Pat Richardson) - both the first name and the surname get declined - if you are somewhat familiar in Polish you should not have hard time guessing the original form of the name

now Pat Richardson can also be a female in English - in Polish it shows in the declination - tej Pat Richardson (gen of female Pat Richardson)

News / Kaczyński wants a people-friendly Poland [64]

With electoral silence, they can't even push people to the polls...

one simple message in one TV station - or an sms/text message campaign can prove enough to mobilize the negative electorate of Kaczyński who would only vote on the second day not to let him in power (and talk about logic here) - many who are fed up with PO can possibly not go to the ballots at all on the first day but then they can be mobilized by the perceived threat - you remember the sms campaign before the election of 2007 ('Change Poland - hide your grandma's ID' - perhaps I have twisted it a bit) - it must have been quite massive
