News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

Exactly he seemed like someone who tried to be nice and accommodating towards his guest

yeah - read the body language - pushing yourself to do something means you don't really mean what you say - nice - OMG - if that was nice then I am Brad Pitt - there are much better ways to show somebody they are welcome than this - even the body language can show your guest you are welcoming them - what Tusk did is say something and provide completely different message through body language - if you can't tell it for the PR stunt it was (meant to impress Polish voters) then I don't know what you can actually tell - btw Donald Tusk never again acted like this (never showed off with his English in front of cameras) AFAIK clearly because he knew the thing with Condoleeza was an utter failure PR-wise

I honestly don't know what you mean - was Lech Kaczyński showing off with his English on any occasion - I just don't - maybe he did and you know something I don't

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

aczynski probably didn't have any idea what Tusk is saying... :)

Lech Kaczyński could definitely understand English enough to understand every word Tusk was saying - his command of spoken English was definitely not good though but he never tried to show off with his English (like Tusk did in this case - a pure PR stunt - and a failed one in my eyes - shows how insecure Tusk is - propably because he needs to lie everyday almost on every topic and often feign someone who he is not)

News / Row over status of Poles in Germany sours relations [176]

I stopped asking people with Polish last names if they were Polish due to the negative responses.

you haven't met real Poles but Germans with Polish surnames - my aunt who is Polish lives in Germany (is married there to a German guy who I call my uncle - they and their son bear a German name) - in the same house lives a family with a Polish surname who have no connection whatsoever to Polishness - hope that explains a couple of facts -

if I weren't the president and would be present at the scene I would laugh even more :P - Kaczyński misbehaved but it was Tusk who was making and idiot of himself - tryign to show off with such 'modest' English

Look at the roars of applause when Reagan threw out a couple of sentences in Russian in Moscow...JFK in Berlin...

they were talking to big native publics (and they were not showing off - a PR stunt is not always showing off wouldn't you agree)

Tusk was clearly trying to show off in front of the cameras - and he failed to impress - and he was very unnatural in this gesture (i.e. pushed himself to do it)

even people (Polish) who I know to dislike Kaczyńskis with passion were ridiculing Tusk for that (and also noticed that he is very tense with his international guests in general)

a gesture of goodwill - you are giving me a laugh - to me it is plain showing off - did it matter for Mrs Rice if he addressed her in person or through an interpreter

and to repeat myself anyone who reads body language as a professional will tell you that Tusk behaves unnaturally in the presence of the 'powerful of the world' - he gets tense etc etc

btw you wouldn't read about Tusk showing off and failing in it in the press that fights Kaczyńskis - it's war - you won't read any praise of Kaczyńskis in Gazeta Wyborcza simple as that

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

I could understand him

but have you seen him nearly trembling and looking like a dog about to beaten??

in my oppinion the self-confidence Mr Tusk shows (or rather shortage of it) about international leaders shows very much what a person he is

btw Tusk was definitely showing off his English to Polish voters greeting Condoleeza Rice - and there was not much to show of with -maybe some Poles were impressed - but I'm sure not many - I wasn't a bit (as far as I know Lech Kaczyński spoke better English but from what I know never showed off)

if you speak English that well just use interpreters or you look funny/strange, Mr Tusk

Travel / Quiet places to visit outside of Krakow [15]

rent a car in Kraków buy a map and go for a trip in the Polish Jura:
summitpost.org/polish-jura/679707
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krak%C3%B3w-Cz%C4%99stochowa_Upland
info.czestochowa.pl/portal/index_page.php?IdCss=0&IdLang=1&IdGroup=1244526707&IdBaza=1226055771&IdWpis=0&IdStr=0
- plenty of walking can be involved - starts just outside Kraków - some castles and palaces (at least one turned museum) , more romantic castle ruins - nice landscapes - some caves - not so many tourists

this is just a suggestion - there are other places to visit around Kraków (though Zakopane and Tatra mountains are very touristy)

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

funny is when Tusk pretends to able to speak Englis (Inglis ;) -

just look at the confidence Tusk shows in his speech - that's how showing off ends (he has shown even hmm more? confidence when hosting Putin and Merkel in Westerplatte in 2009

well, the behaviour of Lech Kaczyński was not very nice I have to admit

History / Polish and Russian soul anno 1914 and today [45]

framed by the words of an outsider.

outsider of what?? of Russian language? very much doubt it - of communism? - you answer it for yourself?

please think a while before stating that Stalin was an outsider even in tsarist Russia (not to mention communist Russia)

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

'sukno

sukno may not be in every day use now but it is still a living word - maybe with a bit specialized meaning (or actually a couple specialized meanings - if you google it)

gumishu:

yeah sure he imposed Georgian imperial policies on poor Russians - everybody had to learn Goergian or end up in a GULAG

he didn't - but you are quoting him to demonstrate "Russian distrust of Poles".

it wasn't me who quoted this - still you point out Stalin not being Russian as if if it was somebody else in his place (an ethnic Russian) the policies of the Soviet Union towards Poland and Polish people would have been much different

Hooded sprayers should be have their tags branded in their foreheads and flogged on Plac Zamkowy.

I have already mentioned that I wouldn't do that anymore - I guess I grew up :)

and hell it was pleasure - it was so much fun ;) - btw you would love the messages (no no tags here) I have inscribed :P (as you are so anti-catholic :P)

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Bestsellery is the worst I have seen so far. Next time you hear someone speak in Polglish like this, ask them what language they're speaking.

bestsellery (the basic form of the plural of bestseller) is a pretty word - and it has firmly grown into the Polish language - it is no polglish thus - there is no one-word Polish term to replace it (and even that two word term appears to be clumsy in use - so bestseller wins in every aspect)

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

If Germany and France wanted to ruin Poland, they could do it overnight.

and will be hated around Europe - all benevolent reputation gone in minutes - then border controls is not the same as throwing people out - Poles going to work in Germany would simply bear it -

you can't manipulate the big players in their own game - we are rookies here - and I generally don't trust those Polish people that were insiders of the EU or IMF (like Lewandowski, Krzysztof Bielecki, Marek Belka (a bit less) - those former guys were part of the Tusk's KLD and also some shady privatisations are alleged to them)

By the way, could you publish your home adress here...Sounds as if you you would like your home and car sprayed over as a piece of art

this is a blow of an arguement - congrats

gumishu:
btw I had a spraying spree

you... rascal

well the spree resulted in three inscriptions on walls and one unfinished (someone left the block next to where we were spraying - OK it was me who was spraying )- and hmm - I have copied 2 of the inscriptions from an article in a newspaper but hell they were provocative

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

Poland also (in terms of voting strength) is one of the big nations in the EU - under the current rules, Poland has 27 votes. Even the big boys (Germany/France/Italy/UK) only have 29 - so what Poland is complaining about, I don't know

ever heard of Lisbon Treaty - it will give European countries voting powers proportional to their population - (which is unfair in an international organization as explained by many politcal scientists and mathematicians - Poland proposed square root system which is much fairer) - should I post some links?

Anyway - at least in my book, Kaczynski had the Presidency and the majority in the Sejm - if the EU was so bad, why didn't he remove Poland from the EU? Right now, and Lisbon hasn't changed anything - EU membership can be revoked by simply repealing the relevant law.

you completely missed the mark - Kaczyński is no euro-sceptic (I am repeating myself) he is very aware of the benefits of the EU to Poland but can see how bigger countries want to screw us here and there (proportional voting system is a major step to do that)

Kaczynski completely forgets to mention that Germany bent over backwards to include Poland in the EU - I have a book dating from 2002 which makes it clear that Germany has refused EU expansion without Poland included - even though Poland should never have been allowed to join in 2004.

you should be aware of the cost Poland payed to join the EU - and it was a huuge cost (mainly because of the asymetrical trade agreements and resulting trade deficit) - some industries in Poland were only bought by western companies to put them out of business (to get rid of the competition - Polish 'sellers' are of course also to blame) (the first that comes to my mind is Fael Ząbkowice)

Language / The Case System - help? quick question [3]

put some more context of the phrase - if it is a Bible quote I can find the translation in my Bible (if you provide the book, verse data)

is it "przez swietym duchem bozego" ?? im confused whether to use accusative or genetive???

przez requires accusative case so it would be przez świętego ducha bożego - but it's not the exact translation of 'by means of God's Holy Spirit'

Okay....Sok got voted prez for a day...what would you change in Poland:

you can do very little as a president of Poland (you mostly can react - little initiative is there) - and on one day - you can well - show up in the TV and say hello to everybody :)

delphiandomine:
Anyone with half a clue about criminology will tell you that serious crimes often begin with far less serious ones.

anyone with half a clue about history will tell you that totalitarianism doesn't come all of a sudden but begins with taking little freedoms away and calling little provocations a crime

little provocation is when someone writes sth on in chalk on tarmac (even Policja to tacy i owacy)- when he sprays things all over it is just vandalism - btw what provocation is there (unless it makes people furious for devastating their property/surrounding) - what thought is there? what idea do they promote? - most people here can see the difference between some artistic or intelectual provocation and vandalism - why can't you?

btw the totalitarianisms I know had strictly totalitarian aims and had not worked in the little steps manner (do you call killing all political oponnents step by step action)

btw I had a spraying spree (one evening together with a friend of mine) early in the 90's - and it was provoacitve believe me - I wouldn't do that now of course

spoken) notion that what is good for Germany and France is good for Europe

I would pull out of the EU and remain a member of the EEA and EFTA.

these had not unlimited trade agreements with the EU before (AFAIK) also Poland needed this work force surplus somewhere (no reasonable amount of foreign (any) investment in Poland would ease the issue of unemployment considerably)
