News / PM Szydło calls V4 summit a success, may be underestimating Old Europe's guile [18]

Yes, on the whole they are doing a good job

You're kidding, aren't you? Despite _mountains_ of evidence that a majority of EU citizens dont' want further integration that's their one and only answer to everything. You can either support EU figures like Juncker or democracy but not both.

Merkel's rolling disaster of a refugee policy is bleeding money and resources and diminishing Germans' quality of life with no positive return in sight, the Greek economy is still stuck in debt bondage, Italy's about to fall over the financial waterfall of Euro-financial gravity and an important member decided to leave and you say they're doing a good job? What would failure look like for you?

Their cack-handed we-know-best attitude is tearing the EU apart and you support them? Why? What are some accomplishments of theirs that should be supported?

UK, Ireland / Indian M & Polish F planning to get married and move to UK [10]

the women go on business as usual.

Women for the most part go with winners and it's not the indigenous population that are winning in the UK or most of Western Europe.

And women in their peak years of fertility are mostly strongly attracted to violent jerkheads (unless the whole culture shames them into going with reliable, boring guys instead).

It is what it is.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

if

I had quoted more but the stupid quote limit is way too short.

The problem is that never happens in Europe (it did at one time, but no longer). Instead, that migrant is going to be encouraged to make weird demands on any German institution they come into contact with about acceptable dress and diet and then some.

those who advocate the brutal expulsion of migrants are giving in to their basest instincts, from which we supposedly evolved!

To be clear, I'm more in favor of keeping migrants out rather than expulsion. And then maybe passive expulsion by making conditions more..... European for them. No special religious-based diets (which are mostly fiction). No special clothing rules. No special holidays. No welfare for those unwilling to work (and no subsidies for children) etc.

In what way am I being cruel?

In enabling dysfunctional patterns of behavior!

a semi-literate Syrian migrant whose heard half their life about "beautiful Germany", then finally arrives there and is told "GO HOME"!!

And what possible economic role (besides economic ward of the state) can a semi-literate Syrian fill in Germany?

I've heard about how nice the Belaggio hotel is and their promotional material clearly is inviting me to go there! If I show up and expect them to house and feed me for life they should agree to, no?

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

it's simply being human to want to live somewhere which has been made so damnably attractive that the rest of the poorer countries,..., are expected to merely gape in awe and realize that it's hands-off except for the deserving few??

I had no idea you were that cruel.

Most of Europe is not very good at creating the kinds of jobs that migrants who don't know the local language or culture very well can do. And Europe is very good at trapping third world migrants in welfare dependency so that generation after generation stagnates under the burden of being completely dependent on their hosts to not starve to death (creating bitter resentment among those trapped in welfare).

Wanting to continue this dysfunctional cycle is morally abhorrent.

You haven't given one example of how to break that terrible cycle. Unless you have real productive suggestions beyond "take them all in and support them forever" there's no point in listening to you. You're part of the problem.

But following your arguments to their ineluctable conclusion, there's no other choice, is there?

Prevention is everything. If European ships dropped migrants back on the closes non-European shore then the exodus would dry up in a hurry and maybe those trying to get to Europe would expend their efforts on improving their own countries rather than dream of living on European welfare.

Although multi-culturalism clearly hasn't worked as planned, the fact is that civilized ADULT humans are often forced to make the best out of a less than favorable situation

So even though this philosophy has not worked anywhere at anytime people are just supposed to go along with it?

How should people let governments know that their actions are unacceptable (don't say elections - they are useless when all the major parties agree on a particular issue).

Always put oneself in the uncomfortable position of the minority aka migrant foreigner

Why? What good will that do (besides facilitating their predations against the indigenous populations)?

They're usually just an unwitting pawn in international money games

The plain fact is that Europeans have built a pretty nice continent to live in. Now, more people want to live in it than can be let in without ruining everything that makes Europe a nice place to live.

The tragedy is that many of those who want in are carrying cultural habits and values that cannot build a nice place to live. And the failed policy of multi-culturalism insists that they keep those dysfunctional values instead of adopting European ones.

They have made it very, very clear that nothing less than force will stop them in greater and greater numbers. If European govenments won't apply that force then it's going to be the indigenous populations that do.

I'm not advocating violence against migrants, just pointing out that it is the natural consequence of the current dysfunctional dynamic created by moralising idiots like Merkel and Juncker. Anyone who can't see that is either stupid or playing stupid.

Real Estate / Brit buying Polish land [7]

This plot will be tricky as he may part-own it with brothers after a death etc.

Huge red warning flag! Polish inheritance law is essentially a dysfunctional cluster fvkk and relatives are generally loathe to sign away anything they think they have a claim/right to. I wouldn't try to buy that with my worst enemy's money until the ownership issue is settled.

If your wife still has family and connections in the village that could definitely help (as some will be less likely to try to screw you over as their reputations could suffer).

Language / Appropriate word selection to positively describe someone in Polish [10]

Yes, I am looking for the word that would mean "great" or "fantastic" that might be used to convey a parent's pride in their adult child (proud of their virtues, accomplishments, character, etc)

That complicates things as Polish parents tend to not do that that much about their adult children.

Do you mean talking to the children themselves or to other people?

But the idea of a Polish person calling their adult child "wspaniały" seems kind of odd to me. Native speakers will have to say what parents say then because I don't have much clue.

In talking to other people, if they're proud of their children they're more likely to list their accomplishments and/or add wspaniały or somesuch to particular accomplishments and not make blanket character statements.

Language / Appropriate word selection to positively describe someone in Polish [10]

not a native speaker, but... (my translations are general and not exhaustive)

zadziwiający - amazing, not used so much about people but more about accomplishments I think zadziwiające wyniki - amazing results

wspaniały - wonderful, is used to describe people, jesteś wspaniały - you're wonderful (said to a man), wspaniała kobieta - a wonderful woman

znakomity - outstanding, used to describe a person's performance of a job than the person themself, znakomity piłkarz - outstanding footballer

uzdolniony - gifted, used more to describe a person's ability in a particular field, as in uzdolniony matematyk - gifted mathematician

I repeat, therefore they are not "COMMITTED" to respect muslim women

Western (non-muslim) governments are very "committed" to respecting Muslims' rights (far more so than most muslim governments).

This is your opinion and I don't agree with it.

But I can back it up with examples, here are three...

Why are you so unconcerned with the values that non-westerners bring to western countries (for the sake of this argument, Poland is 'western')?

Do you think that everybody in the world is just waiting to become a liberal in search of social justice? I hate to break it to you but a great many people in the developing world are attached to a great many destructive dead-end ideas and will continue to pursue them if they make it into a western country.

News / Petru wants Tadeusz Mazowiecki monument in Warsaw [25]

Tylko cztery złotych kochanie! Missus Clever Shopper! And I'll only need to use a tiny bit of it. Relative to the amount in weight though, it is ludicrously expensive.

For some reason it's ridiculously cheap in Bulgaria. А 15 gram bag costs something like 10 zloties.....

Like turmeric I mostly use it in the preparation of Spanish rice. I used to love some curries but in recent years.... meh. But I love me some yellow rice. Too bad black beans aren't easy to find as black beans and yellow rice used to be a big favorite of mine.

the locals have moved on from what happened.

"We do not move on" could be one of the Polish national mottoes.... On the other hand "I'm not interested in that" is another so you often get a weird mix of stubborn apathy.....

Love / Polish Girl Friend (Im Turkish) [30]

the reason why its not allowed in Islam for a Muslim women to marry non muslim men is that a non muslim man will not have any religious commitment for respecting Muslim woman

how could you (or anyone else) possibly know that?

Muslim men are committed to respect the people of book ( Christians and Jews ) Monotheistic faith and prophets

This is absolutely not true in practice. the rights of religious minorities in places with large muslim minorities tend to only be respected when the minorities are under the stated or implied protection of a monarch or dictator. the increasing humans rights abuses against Christians in Egypt and abuses against non-traditional muslim groups like the Alawites or Ahamdis show that muslims tend to hate any minority and do their best to wipe them out.

rather than the so called "double standard".

It's the exact defnition of "double standard". Not to mention that it assumes women are the property of groups and not moral agents.

if a Muslim is a healthy person and read his book correctly

If you look at the muslim word today the only possible interpretation is that a large majority of muslims are not healthy and/or do not read the koran correctly.

turmeric, another of your obesssions

What's wrong with turmeric (kukurma in common Polish usage)? I find someone obsessed with it to be very, very sad.

I've taken your advice of putting saffron in the rice

Missus Big Spender! Good day at the races???????

spend one's time, energy and money not in arguments or monuments, but in putting aside differences to make present day Poland a better place for Poles to live

Very true and anathema to about 60% of Polish people (probably more) who quite enjoy arguing and holding grudges and never letting anything go (the more it should be let go the more tenaciously some hold on to it).

Law / Polish citizen moving back from USA to the EU (Ireland or Netherlands) with American partner [31]

so I don't need any knowledge of Dutch.

You're going to be living in your program?

Students studying in English language programs in the Netherlands often decide the country is a nice place to live and start to think about settling down. But since they don't speak Dutch (or just know basic survival Dutch) they're effectively locked out of much of the job market.... even if the working language at a company is English, the hiring process is about people who can fit in a team (of Dutch people).

The unofficial (but real) Dutch attitude toward such students is roughly: Give us some money! Here's your diploma. Now leave!

If a program doesn't require/offer Dutch language then you can rest assured it's all about extracting money from you for a degree of no real value in that country.

Sorry I didn't realize you were a Muslim, if non practicing then there may be no problems

This was partly my point (that the insufferably stupid moderator didn't get).

Traditionally many in western Turkey have a very..... loose relationship wtih Islam (similar to many in western countries who claim to belong to a religion they mostly don't follow).

But that's changing for a bunch of reasons. If the OP is, for example, a supporter of Erdogan than he would probably make a very poor husband to a non-muslim woman. If he's more.... moderate in practice then maybe things could work out.

How many Polish Male + Turkish Female?

It happens. Things are mostly kept kind of low key because of the number of violent maniacs who call themselves muslim but I've known of a number of non-Arab non-Pakistani muslim women married to non-muslim women (with their families' approval).

Attitudes toward muslim women in relationships with non-muslim men are also a good barometer for general ability to live in the west (outside of a self-imposed ghetto).

We are mortal enemies with Turkey.

Actually Poland has a mixed, but mostly positive history with Turkey.

Of course things are going to go to hell with Erdogan turning the country into an Islamic Republic (the more theocratic the government the worse life is in muslim countries). I wonder if he's going to reintroduce the Ottoman script (one of the ultimate symbols of Ataturk whose work he's so determined to undo).

If sensible turks can get rid of this pious thief then their country has great potential. If not, then a decline to third world standards will quickly occur.

stick to the topic please

Language / Polish online slang phrases? [12]

I'm assuming the orignal was "nasze" not nas which makes no sense. If it was nasze then:

Our girls ran in high heels.

Laski implies the girls are cute or hot, so.... compliment?

If you put the sentence into google images it will give you a good idea....

Language / Grammar question about conditionals in Polish. [20]

"to" is a 'spójnik międzyzdaniowy' here, so it is written jointly)

was always convinced that it should be written separately in this case.

Well toby looks wrong, I checked a bunch of sources before believing it was right.... I think to by looks better in all cases, but... (but then I always want to write "potym jak" rather than "po tym jak" so what do I know?)

You can see that Polish often surprises even its native speakers.

True of all langauges, English spelling is an endless source of speculation, disappointment and surprises for native speakers....

News / Poland's resentful and frustrated poor losers' camp still at it [53]

And in this 1% true term you too see and believe the wholly fabricated 99% Harryesque lie alleging that Jarek signed up to prosecute political dissidents

You're becoming unhinged. It's not Harry's claim, it's Piotr Semka's as relayed by rzeczpospolita. I take no position on the veracity of Semka's claims.

In journalism there is a thing called 'atrribution'. You need to learn about it.

Again the pidgin syndrome has kicked in. In this context aplikacja is not an English application, a form one fills in to obtain some benefit (scholarship, job, membership of some organisation, etc.) It is a type of traineeship, apprenticeship or internship,

"In 1971 both Jarek and Leszek applied to become trainee advocates

this is okay as a rough approximation of:

startowali w 1971 roku w wyścigu o aplikację adwokacką

he's translating "startowali ... w wyścigu l" as applied

and "aplikacje adwokacką" as "trainee advocates"

As a rough approximation it's okay (I don't like 'trainee advocates' and would probably say something like 'legal traineeships'

In this case i'd say the pidgin syndrome is yours.... mic drop, Soookoh!

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

They benefited indirectly by landing in America

Only about 5 % of those taken to the new world by the Atlantic Slave Trade ended up in places that are now the US. One reason for that was that slaves were treated (comparitively) much better than in the Caribbean basin or in Latin America.

Of course slavery was terrible everywhere but it was much milder in the US than in other places in the western hemisphere (where most were worked to death with a steady supply of replacements).

Of course no one wants to dredge up the dreadful history of slavery in places like Haiti, Brasil or Cuba which was far more savage and bloody than in the US.

Travel / Help: Travelling from Gliwice to Zilina (Slovakia) [7]

I am currently living in Gliwice and I want to go to visit some friends in Zilina. However, I could only find trains (3 trains in total) to travel there.

And your problem is.....? Unless you speak Polish and some Czech and/or Slovak you're not going to find any better connection.
