Travel / Polish Architecture [147]

I am trying to find an image for it.
it collapsed yesterday.
I can't post the image but I can post the link to the forum that has the photo of the collapse.

This is the meteor station, so the weather forecast might be wrong until they rebuild or relocate.

Travel / Seven Secret Wonders of Poland [17]

I think that the salt mine itself isn't that cheap to maintain.

Yeah but the salt mine is one of the most visited places in Poland.
it is not cheap and it is always full but the local council can't put the money to good use.
I have had the displeasure of going to the offices in Wieliczka, it was amazing, like a prison.
The people working there were unhappy/unhelpful but I am not surprised because of the conditions they are subjected to.
I have also gone to the local council in neighbouring Niepolomice, a completely different world, possibly the nicest town hall i have ever had the pleasure of going to in any country.

The people reflected this and are very helpful.

maybe the word 'secret' is the key and they put on the list only less known things

That makes a lot of sence.

Wieliczka is a wonder, where does all the money from the salt mine go?.
Wieliczka is a very poor area, other neighbouring towns are prospering but Wieliczka, with it's salt mines, has not progressed at all.
The wonder is where does all the money go???

it takes a bit of getting used to this forum.
There are tools just above the box you type into, that you can use to post photos.

Thanks for the memories anyway.

Cool Lexi, we could see if more people from this forum would be interested in going closer to the time.
You'll have to remind me for sure, it is still snowing here, May seems far away.

Oh,
The thing about Krakow really is it has so many cool basement bars (Piwnica) and funky bars on all sorts of floors, nobody must know them all.

I have been to some amazing places but I can't, for the life of me, remember where they were ha ha ha, a good time was had by all none the less.

Let us know when you come here in May and we'll go for a beer in the Drukarnia

going back to the student pub Drukarnia

I could have this wrong but i am pretty sure someone else was talking about the Drunkarnia and said it had been bought over and changed.

They also loved it there, I hope I am wrong for your sake.

where exactly is Alchemia?

It's on the corner of the main square in the Jewish quarter.

I just love Kaszmierz.

Yeah it is great there, you should come over for the Jewish festival, great craic.

a few doors along from Alchemia at 4 in the morning,

There are loads of bars there now.
I try to pub crawls but I can never remember where I have been and I always end up in Alchemia ha ha ha.

I was the only British person there I think, had some wonderful conversations,

That must have been quite a while ago.

met some great polish people .

Do you remember her name ? ;)

. It was a great time, but I believe it has changed considerably now.

Yeah it has changed and become more hip and trendy.
And there are a lot more tourists, well that's easy cause there were so few before but it has a load more bars now, each one trying to out do or out weird the next.

I know people get sentimental about the way it was but the truth is there is still great nights to be had and conversations with some great people, be they Polish or other.

The only negative thing, is the price of beer, it used to be a cheap place to drink about 5 PLN a half litre now it is about 7?. Which is still less than 2 euro and less than 150 pounds, so not that much of a difference.

I recommend going on the Crazy tours.
This tour offers a wacky animated look at the day in the day life during communism.
Not to be missed.
It is the communist tour of Nowa Huta, a communist built (steal works) city beside Krakow.
It is near impossible for someone outside of communism to get a feel for what it was like but there is no harm in trying.

It is a laugh.

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

I thought I would do an omnibus, having not been on for more than 5 minutes this week.
I am probably the least qualified for the job and therefore the most likely to get it. (I expect a big fat severance bonus).
I hope to achieve for the writers of this thread, what Bush did for Obama.

So I will assume the norm has continued unlike everything else, consistency in a world gone mad.

Speaking of Guinness,
The male owl, with the girlie cake name, went to Kazakhstan to promote Guinness.
Only to have had a sudden thirst on him,
like the Nairobi dessert, mid flight and broke into the cargo bay and drink it dry.
In a last ditch attempt of redemption he made up a concoction of water, window wiper fluid, black shoe polish and shaving foam to impersonate Guinness.

Only, he had a little Irish flue and it was so good that he drank that and all.

Polish Forums...
I never understood the necessity for the plural,
more than likely there are other forums that I am unaware of.
But my loyalties lie here. ha ha ha

Polonius3 and Seanus have been insider dealing, "You set'em up and I'll stir it up".
Polonius3 on a quick glance has at least slowed down his rampage but Seanus is keeping his end of the bargain and resurrecting threads like an evangelist on fire.

A special award for Seanus is in order, passing the winter blues by, he is an example of a true PF member (no insult meant he he he).

Some none-Poles,
If there are any on here???;)
Have been wondering why their girlfriend parts their hair to the right
and has a dodgy recording of "Prefab Sprout - The King of Rock n' Roll",
which apparently only people from this gene pool have???.

There has to be something about the way the Polish hate Jews,
there couldn't be a day that goes by without a "good auld" Jew hating debate,
unfortunately none of these people have actually been to Poland.
Frozen dew on the car does not count.

Big talk about the retaliation for the muslins, no doubt, I am a blinds man meself (easier to vacuum without tearing).

Not to forget all the rest of the other racists, heroically fighting problems the rest of us don't have.

Speaking of communism, there is a leak in North Korea, who has access to the internet amazingly enough.
Our new? comrade is a red through and through, although he communicates with us, capitalist pigs, he is on a one way course of re-educating us, there in lies the problem, to re-educate we have to be educated first off.

In technology, it has been noted that on here, we are all in fact Spy-Bots, that is why we do not change our minds and stick to our agendas.

The car manufacturers are having a Pink party with the ressionator.
Proving once again that they have stacks of cash in reserves.

In the midst of life we are in death of winter, it seems on PF we have an early spring.
Some of the seasonal birds have flown back, like a blossoming flower in the snow and like everything precious, it should be appreciated.

Others have left,
for a while anyway,
Change is as good as an arrest.
So go on get yourself arrested.

Travel / Best method of transport to get from Warsaw to Kaunas? [14]

Yes there is a train but it takes about 7 hours, it has to change tracks because Western and "old Russian" Lithuania track sizes are different.

The coach is probably your best bet, many people hitch-hike.

I am in Vilnius now, I often drive from Krakow-Warsaw-Kaunas-Vilnius, depending on traffic.
The road from Krakow to Warsaw is good and getting boarder, the road from Warsaw to the Pol/Lith Boarder is very bad and under huge amount of construction (thank goodness).

Best time to drive is in summer on Sunday, most Trucks are not allowed to drive then.
Leave early in the morning, it should take about 6 hours.
I have never taken the bus.

Remember Lithuania is one hour ahead of Poland.

If you have anymore questions, just ask.

Best of luck.

Law / Irish welcome on Polish building sites ? [47]

no luck yet!

Did the Irish develpoer pull out?.

why do you think it would be 'strange' for this to happen?

Irish people have not come to Poland to work labouring.
I have yet to hear of an electrician or plumber living off their trade here.
The 'strange' part is that hundreds of thousands of poles went to Ireland looking for work on site.
If things would have been different this would not of happened.

meaning Irish people looking for work in Poland?????

I have met a few Irish living here, English teachers for the most part a few publicans and property developers.

I have met some Irish architects considering working here.

History / The Celts in Poland. [71]

Celtic, Germanic, Slavic, Italic, etc. languages all descend from the same group.

Fair point, how far back was that?.

Ok, so this thread is talking about Celts in Poland.
I am going to go slightly off topic and talk about the people and about one building in particular, in Ireland before the Celts arrived.

This is a plan and cross section of the interior of Newgrange.

It is cruciform in shape but of course this was over 3000 years before Christ.

This is the entrance, behind the huge stone. Notice the purpose built hole above the door, called the roofbox.

On the morning of the Winter Solstice, the rising sun beams through the roofbox and floods the passage with light. Illuminating right to the very end chamber.

Poland Celt

To be continued....

History / The Celts in Poland. [71]

That is a fair enough point and I wonder how closely related we are?.

"The Celts were originally a Germanic people" from Here
newkerala.com/topstory-fullnews-67115.html

Which I have never heard before and think it is wrong, to a large degree.
Not to say these peoples did not mix, of course but the Germanic people have/had a different language and culture to the Celts.

Here is a clearer map of Krakow's Castle, market square and the green part around it (the old moat). And the Jewish quarters in the bottom right.

Map of Krakow

Also Check Cracow-life. They have up to date events, pubs, clubs, places to sleep, shopping, museums and art galleries etc...

Also for news in English about Krakow, check the free newspaper Krakow Post. You can find it at the airport and various tourist information offices. It is not a fantastic paper but some of the articles are of interest.
