Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

BubbaWoo: you will go and view 2 properties, next to each other - one has been renovated beautifully, the other is a mess. strangely enough they will be priced identically. mr greedy in property 2 thinks his is worth the same as the one that has been renovated. because he is a greedy fool.

No, he does it because he knows that the banks will loan some sucker to money to buy. Mr. Greedy has changed his tune a bit over the last couple of months, but he knows it's just a matter of time before the slop bucket comes out again.

Life / Mosquitoes in Poland [40]

[Moved from]: Mosquito season in Poland

Well, I just took one of the f*ckers out, so I suppose the season is upon us.

Other than keeping your windows shut, how do you keep yourself from getting covered in little itchy bumps (...from mosquitos....)?

Law / Kaczyński doubts the Euro currency will survive [49]

Euro for Poland? no not yet, Polands not ready at all....

It won't help Poland at all. Control over the currency is one of Polands most powerful weapons in drawing investment and will be the key in long term growth.

The Euro brings nothing to the table for Poland. It's only as stable as it's weakest member.

Law / Why have they built another huge shopping centre in Lodz? [7]

There's a flight from Lodz to Warsaw? What on earth is the point?!

The company has code share agreements with LOT, it's for people connecting in Warsaw. It's the same airline that is flying the Zielona Gora and Bygoszcz routes.

Law / Why have they built another huge shopping centre in Lodz? [7]

This is the 3rd large shopping centre in Lodz, Manufaktura and Galeria. Most polish people in these places seem to only window shop, why keep building more when the roads and airport are so bad?

Someone is buying, or else these places wouldn't be able to pay rent.

How much money can a private investor make putting money into roads? Quite a bit of money has been dumped into the airport. Expect more to go in soon.

Just out of curiosity, do you know how the flights to Warsaw and Vienna are doing? Are those pringles cans full?

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

The percentage of ther liquidity has still not been decided so in the meantime, the banks are only investing in government bonds and increasing the interest rates to existing customers to build up as much cash as possible to make sure that they have adequate reserves to meet any regulations that may be brought in.

Banks already have liquidity ratios which they have to uphold, but 1:9 doesn't do much good when 20% of your loans go sour.

The value of property will be governed by the ability to borrow and the supply and demand.

Spot on, you've already explained the cost of construction here. On the flip side, buyers will either have to make enough money to afford the new constructions, or the price will have to come down.

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

You seem to misunderstand what value actually is (a common problem here when it comes to property). Something is worth what a person will pay for it. So a flat is worth what somebody will pay for it.

Or what someone will loan you to pay for it. Money is close to free at the moment, once that changes, prices will adjust accordingly.

Travel / Travelling from Wrocław to Prague [7]

Also a great experience to anyone who has taken this route.

I remember that, used to stop in Miedzylesie in the middle of the night... It was especially nice in the winter when they took the pissed off wet dog through the train.

Travel / Travelling from Wrocław to Prague [7]

There used to be a direct overnight train, but it looks like everything runs through Katowice now. There are a couple of sleeper trains leaving from Katowice though.

Eurolines runs to Prague.

If you're going to be three people, why not just rent a car and drive down? Takes about 3-4 hours. The roads are nice once you get past Klodzko, and it's highway from Hradec Kralove.

Travel / Travel to Lwow from Rzeszow [18]

And in German cities you can speak German?

2. When in Lwow, am I better speaking Polish or English? I don't want to invite a smack in the mouth.

If you're paying for something, it doesn't matter what language is coming out of your mouth. Your wallet is speaking the universal language.

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

Hey, stop worrying about the jokes and fix the streets. Smile a bit, and stop trying to cheat people. Start being proud in the work that you do. That would help the psyche a lot more than to stop telling lame jokes.

What, where on earth did you find English menus? We visited a fair few cafes and only really found Polish menus.

Amadeus and Kupel have english menus and oddly enough, friendly english speaking staff :)

Law / Kaczyński doubts the Euro currency will survive [49]

Greece is a good test for how well the Euro can cope when one of the member countries grossly undermines its financial underpinnings. How much are other members willing to contribute in order to keep it stable? At least Greece is still manageable...what happens when Spain or Italy start having problems?

USA, Canada / My boyfriend is being deported to Poland because his US visa expired, help needed [53]

We don't know if there has been a decrease in overstays, we only know that there has been a decrease, over the last year, of visa refusals. So basically it looks like this:

2004 - Poles are allowed to work in EU countries
2006 - Refusal rate is 26%
2007 - Refusal rate is 25%
2008 - Refusal rate is 13%

No one knows what the overstay rate is. It's not published. I have no clue what the reason is for the change in denying 1:4 to denying 1:9 over the course of 12 months. That's all. I'm sure there's a reason for it, but no one knows it. It would be nice to know what it is so that we have something to talk about on the third trip to Krakow for a visa interview....

USA, Canada / My boyfriend is being deported to Poland because his US visa expired, help needed [53]

I guess I don't follow. Poland and several other countries did not meet the requirements so they're not part of the VWP. Czech Republic did - so they're part of VWP (I think?)

Right, the VWP consists of two criteria. One is the refusal rate, which is arbitrary, and some how magically dropped from near 30% to 13.8% in a single year. The second is the overstay rate, which is a bit more scientific, still a guess because US-VISIT doesn't work, but still hard criteria. The first is known, the second number is nowhere to be found. I'm not saying that it was some sort of conspiracy, but it is very, very, very odd that the refusal rate would drop by such a large amount over the period of 12 months.

Back before the latest round of countries included in the VWP, I knew quite a few people from both countries applying for visas. I don't know any Czechs who were refused, that includes recently graduated students, young people with no property or jobs...you know, people you would think might not come back.... On the other hand, In Poland I know of a 12 year old who was refused a visa as well as a grandmother... That really boggles the mind.

Seeing as the refusal rate is the statistic that is constantly referenced as the reason for non inclusion in the VWP, well, it just looks a bit odd.

I agree with you completely on the Mexican issue, it's important to remember that they're becoming a very powerful voting block as well.

With the health care bill fiasco, we're pretty much assured that the Republicans are going to sweep congress. Hopefully this time they'll focus on domestic policy...

In 2008, Poland had a 13.8% visa refusal rate

Right, the refusal rate is arbitrary, and up until recently was near 30%, which was a complete joke. Before the VWP, Czech students just went down to the consulate, had a quick interview, and were given a visa. Some Poles had to come back two or three times. We're talking kids and the elderly, not young workers. The criteria was different for Poles than that for people from other CEE countries. I don't have a problem with tight controls, but why apply them so unevenly?

Regarding US-VISIT, it's broken beyond belief. Fix that and you take care of 50% of the illegal immigration problem.

It's a good start, but god help you if you have any problems while you're over there. Crisp US currency seems to trump just about everything else. It comes out of the ATMs over there.

News / Hollywood's War with Poland. [150]

What mean peace of anti-polish prejudice and propaganda!

There was a Pole in that? I was subjugated to it on a plane, I don't remember any Poles in it.

There are countless shows of the positive things of Britain. When one thinks of Britain they think of "Royalty" "Kings", elegance, "Sun doesn't set on the British Empire" a positive etc.

I think of sharia law, disgusting political correctness, ridiculous household debt, good people, and great IPA and stouts.

Language / Poltran? (the free online Polish-English dictionary) - where's it gone? [48]

Concerning Esperanto, I think that the World needs a modern spoken lingua franca :)

How about this, the current linua franca is English. Esperanto is a Western language, English is a Western language.

Trying to forcefully replace English with another language at this point would be a gross misapplication of resources to reach some sort of utopian vision. Sound familiar?

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

As a smoker, i support the smoking ban. I have no problem with going. My problem is with the proposed 15m rule. It could ruin places!

As a supporter of private property rights, I'm completely against the ban. I would be more supportive of a ban of smoking on public property (say...outside a pub...).

USA, Canada / My boyfriend is being deported to Poland because his US visa expired, help needed [53]

The way I understand it they apply simply statistics.

I'd still like to see that statistic.

which is of course why so many Poles get their visas denied

People that overstay their visas are sh*tting in the pool. They are completely f*cking Poles who follow the rules. It's criminal. Confiscate their property and sell it to cover the cost of deporting them.

Nonetheless, I still would like to see the overstay estimate numbers.....
