Travel / Why some travelers hate Poland? [45]

As far as I know they are allowed to vote and there are Arab parties according to my Israelian friends over here.

Who's they? Is the West bank part of Israel? Can the people that are living there, and that were born, can they vote in the elections of the country they live in?

Same Arab parties that were banned from national elections (recently overturned by the Supreme Court)?

The free people that get kicked out of their houses after 30 years because they were "illegally" built? Freedom of checkpoints all over the place while traveling? Freedom of being told when you can tend to your land? Freedom to have homes built where you used to farm without compensation. Yup, that all sounds like a model of freedom and democracy...

I'd say Jordan and Lebanon seem a wee bit more free and democratic to me...

That is a sad, sad article that really reflects the quality of the source. A writeup by an American student...Yay JewishPost.

Let me quote

In reference to a Polish Jew:

She probably does not even know what it is like to not be hated.

Sounds like a horrible place Maya. Sounds like nothing gets past her.

Much better writeup from Haaretz...as usual.

Language / Poltran? (the free online Polish-English dictionary) - where's it gone? [48]

It's called English. There's lots of material out there on teaching it. There are lots of native speakers. It's easy to pick up the basics, no reinvestment needs to be made. Esperanto might work for the western world, but the majority of new language learning is taking place in Asia, particularly in countries which have been largely influenced during colonial times by the English language.

News / Can Poland expect similar bomb attacks as in Moscow? [85]

So, will it be silence again or you will fight your fear and utter your soul out, Crowie?

There is a long explanation coming, I'm guessing proto-slavic will be mentioned a couple of times :)

Life / Why Poles are so crazy about their country? [55]

Torq: Wind-up for a wind-up - that's how it works on PF ;)

And that works back and forth up to the point that you get so pissed off that you have to have a beer with the person on the other end of the keyboard. The PF way.

Torq: I am crazy about Poland too, but not a nationalist at all. I appreciate the achievements
of other countries but Poland is more important to me obviously.

I guess having a pair of passports probably makes this a bit different for me. There are too many people around the world that have an allegiance for no other reason than their parents f*cked somewhere. It goes back to a pack/herd mentality that usually ends up causing problems.

Life / Why Poles are so crazy about their country? [55]

Torq: How long is the history of United States - 250 years or so? Polish is over 1000 years,
so why don't you come back in about 800 years and then we'll talk about short man
complexes and stuff ;)

Remember, I'm half Nazi and half savage Indian.

I still think it's short man complex. Possibly because of the 1000 years (is that counting the time while under the thumb of invading countries?). Of course for some, there is something to prove now. I like Polish history, I think there were a lot of very brave people in Polish history... I also think that nationalists are a cancer on society.

Life / I'm from Polish descent. CAN YOU GUYS EXPLAIN THE EU TO ME? [115]

delphiandomine: The problem is that without the EU having the power to dictate, we would never see things like Open Skies in the EU.

Holland signed up for a bilateral open skies agreement in '92 despite huge objections by the EU.

delphiandomine: It actually does make things significantly better in many areas - the EU should be more efficient now

How's that working out?

delphiandomine: Remeber, people voted for national parliaments

Which is why we know that the majority of people in the UK supported the war Iraq :)

So what is the EU endgame? To have parallel governments? Does that make sense?

jwojcie: As for production it is kind of cliche that US or UK don't produce anything anymore. They are and still have quite big industrial base.

It's a service based economy that consists primarily around consumption.

Life / Why Poles are so crazy about their country? [55]

Partyzant AK: Your not gonna understand it...

Sure I do, I just think that nationalism and taking credit for something you didn't do is a cancer on society.

Partyzant AK: What are u doing on this forum ?

Just blowing time between conference calls.

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

SeanBM: Are they? I haven't read that, salaries have been rising slowly but quite steadily for the past four years or so.

They have, the forecast is now for them to be stagnant, which makes sense considering the zloty is appreciating.

SeanBM: I believe it also takes into account that both parents work.

And not stay at home with the kid? :)

SeanBM: Are you comparing renting and buying the same place?
It is cheaper to rent but not close to that much, based on a flat in the centre of Krakow.

Yea, same place. The mortgage and insurance on my place would be 3x the rent.

SeanBM: How much rent will you charge? :X

depends on how many weeks you're planning on staying.

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

Ziemowit: Describing this information as "idiotic" reflects your enormous disbelief in the breadth and depth of the property crisis in the US rather than in the actual facts.

It's not realistic. Bidding a dollar for a house, and receiving a house with no liens against it, that's not happening.

That is, well, idiotic. I have crisp $100 bill in my wallet right now, I wouldn't mind being a slum lord in Columbus.

I'll even pay for the removal of the house and sit on the lot for the next 75 years.

News / Can a Polish person give up EU handouts? [15]

Every man, woman, and child in Poland needs to come up with a check for €1705

that's 500m out of the coffers vs 140b into the coffers... Talking about "millions" and the EU isn't even worth mentioning :)

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

Right now renting in Poland is much.....much much much cheaper than buying. It breaks down to paying 30% of your income to rent, or 70% to buy...

So wait, the people that run the international media, international banking, and international foreign policy haven't been able to wipe out a couple of poor Arabs?

Law / KaczyƄski doubts the Euro currency will survive [49]

Seanus: I have swathes of evidence on 9/11

There's a fair bit of evidence that a couple of Saudis flew airplanes into buildings because they were pissed off at the great satan.

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

The 25% has been from '04-'08

As that other poster is saying, a dollar for a house in the states?? is that realistic?

No, that's idiotic.

There are sites (like open finance) that provide answers to this and it is published in the papers too.

Alright, according to your link, in Wroclaw it's 51 m2 for 306,000, seems about right (we won't even add in the 7% tax, or fees).

"Average" gross salary is 3,283.18, seems a bit high, but ok, we'll go with that.

That gives us a net salary of 2700 a month.

Lets be generous and say that you can come up with 25% for a down payment (37 months of full salary), that leaves us with a mortgage payment (on the low end, and adjustable) of 1400 a month, on a 30 year note. Fixed you're looking at 2000 a month.

That leaves the new "average" family with a 2+1 with 1300 a month, before things like insurance and bills.

Would you loan that family money?

For bonus points, salaries are expected to be stagnant for a good while to come.

looks like quotes are f*cked up

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

I think it is a bit sharp for people from the U.S., Ireland, England etc... whose housing prices have just been completely and utterly bust to be poking fun at a relatively, let me repeat "relativity", stable priced market here in Poland.

4 years of 25% year on year increases is relatively stable?

It's not poking fun, it's just a couple of simple questions. How can someone making an average salary afford to buy a place?
