Life / School and stadium violence in Poland? [21]

World poverty is falling. From 1970 to 2006, poverty fell by 86% in South Asia, 73% in Latin America, 39% in the Middle East, and 20% in Africa.

However, it's still a huge problem in the world.

Life / School and stadium violence in Poland? [21]

There is no Milicja Obywatelska anymore. In the PRL you knew what the consequence would be.

You can find a lot of this in, for example, Russia and Brazil (and many other Southern American countries) as well. You can't blame Western Europe for this. It's a global phenomena.

The main problem is that the football violence is not limited to the stadium. You can find it in many other places as well. And it affects people who have no connection to football. It's has grown to a strong subculture.

Life / Passing your Polish language and culture to your kids [74]

Who made you decider of what parents should do?

I don't decide what other people must do.

But I make my own choices when it comes to my own thoughts and opinions. What I write should be considered as what I think other people should do. Not what they actually must do. And I don't judge people who have the opposite opinion. But I know that these children usually benefit a lot from being bilingual.

I have several bilingual friends, who all are very happy that their parents gave them this gift. I also know a few people who are disappointed that their parents didn't gave them this opportunity in life.

Language / Question about podoba sie [23]

I have a pretty good explaination of this kind of constructions, that I can scan and send if anyone wants it.

but shouldn't the phrase here read "PodobaJĄ mi się twoje buty."

Yes, it's true, buty is a plural word. My mistake.

Language / Question about podoba sie [23]

It's not so difficult.

Podoba mi się twoje buty. = Lit. Your shoes are attracting me. (Your shoes are attractive to me).

The person who likes is the object (dative) and the thing that is liked is the subject (nominative).

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

Difficult to know. Because these clients/clinics are probably very discrete in PL. I don't think it's something they promote in traditional ways.

Love / How to make a guy (Polish or other) happy? [62]

very smart... thanks for that :)

I think it can be applied to most situations concerning love/relationships.

All I can say is: Proverbs are wisdom of a nation.

And that means?

Genealogy / Mixed-Blood Poles in America (Do we count?) [118]

Nationality depends on culture just as much as genes or where you were born.

So it depends, in some ways, on what culture you choose.

Language / may/might (expression) [25]

It's one of the main problems. Many people have problems with ć, ń, ś, ź, ni, si, ci, zi. The so called softening of consonants.

Language / Self-Study books for level B1 [2]

Polish in 4 weeks level 2 is designed for B1. It's a pretty good book.

However, you need to revise the A-level grammar. Polish in 4 weeks Level 1 is probably the best Polish course book I have seen.

Also try to read Polish online newspapers. It's free, and it's one of the best ways to get a better vocabulary on this level.

Travel / Traveling on a TLK (Tanie Linie Kolejowe) - where to buy tickets? [13]

If you want the cheapest tickets go by InterRegio.

Hmm... are you interested in masochism?

Cheap yes, but the seats in IR are harder than hard. And the word ventilation doesn't exist in their vocabulary.

But for short trips they are okey. ;)

Travel / Traveling on a TLK (Tanie Linie Kolejowe) - where to buy tickets? [13]

I think that you don't need reservation on TLK anymore...? I travelled with TLK several times lately without reservation.

However, on Intercity you usually still need reservation.

If they didn't change everything once again...

Life / My first impressions of Poland, long time ago [37]

The restaurants, where all items also mentioned their weight. Did they actually check this in the kitchen?

In many places they still have it like this.

Life / Things we enjoyed as kids in Poland [140]

OK but in which way is it different to the "swieże mleko" I buy in bottles (and which stays good for like max. 2 weeks) ?

Niepasteryzowane hasn't been heated and can contain some pathogenic bacteria. Ordinary milk is always heated before it's filled into bottles.

Language / may/might (expression) [25]

Może "is" actually 2 different words.

Może (number 1) means maybe (and it's never conjugated or declined). So it's easy to handle.

-------------------------------------------

Może (number 2) is the 3rd person singular of the verb you mentioned moć (on/ona/ono/to może). This word means to be able to.

To be able to (moć):
Ja mogę
Ty możesz
on/ona/ono/to może
etc...

This conjugation you can find in 301 Polish Verbs.

-------------------------------------------

Może (number 1) = maybe
Może (number 2) = to be able to

You must look at the context to determine which of the 2 meanings is the correct one in a given sentence.

i might not go there today
i may want to see you today
you might not like it

In these cases you use Może number 1 (see above).
