Life / Why is Orange Poland such a crappy / expensive network? [53]

I am still using orange, just because I can't be bothered going through the whole thing with moving my number to a different network (I last did this in the UK about 6 years ago, has it got any easier?). Although I used play for a while for data services and thought it was good in the city. However when I have stuff to do out in the country I had nothing, it's not great with Orange either. This will improve, but it just takes time for the masts to go up.

The issue I have is with the time limits on top-ups. I don't use my phone all that much, just very short phone calls and texts. However if I topped up the amount I use in a month (probably around 10-15zl, unless I deliberately phone the UK to use it up) I would only get 10 days before it was useless. I remember this being the case when I got my first phone in the UK around 10 years ago or so, but is it really necessary. It is such a colossal rip off saying that, I only have a limited amount of time to access my credit!

As I have not used Play for cellular service I cannot say if they are the same, but if they are I might just go through with the hassle!

News / Could be in prison for 10 years for trying to bribe the Polish traffic police [39]

As someone who is about to buy a car in Poland with a UK driving licence, I can see where the road rules come in. I drove in Vietnam where you can bribe your way out of anything and the roads were chaos, maybe 500 people dying every month on the road. You may think that Polish roads are bad for crazy drivers, but you have seen nothing until you hit poor parts of South East Asia or Africa. When there are no rules the whole thing goes tits up. You can value your freedom all you want, but don't do it on my roads!

UK, Ireland / The West Highland Way - 96 miles through some of Scotland most beautiful routes. [28]

I've just been reading Ranulph Fiennes' book about his Transpolar expedition, in which he said that Scottish lumberjacks use Avon's Skin So Soft, or something like that, against the wee fukcers (midges, not American ladies). Ever heard that? I wonder if it would work with mossies.

It's actually issued to the Royal Marines for tropical conditions and every Wind Farm building team on the West Coast of Scotland is given it by the box load. I found that it's the best thing on the market for midges and it works very well for mossies too. It's well worth getting hold of some.

Love / Is it acceptable for a Polish male to have a German girlfriend? [58]

HOW DARE YOU! I can't believe you would even think about dating a person from a 70 year old enemy, I mean, I am not even Polish and I am disgusted...I wish something terrible to happen to you and all your family...

...wait, no I don't. But I will give you some advice:

1. Unless you want stupid answers, don't ask stupid questions.
2. Don't feed the trolls, even if you aren't tolling, realise trolls will pounce on this.
3. I don't think there are many people in Europe as a whole who hold the german youth responsible for the war, so let's just let it lie.

4. Seriously, that's the question you asked??

UK, Ireland / Is the UK referred to as the Islands in Polish media back home? [62]

Hm, don't Brits refer to the rest of Europe as 'the continent'? So, from continental point of view, they are 'the isles'. What's strange or offensive in that?

Exactly, the Isles isn't a term I've used much or heard people using here. But I don't see why on Earth it would be offensive or strange. If I heard someone refer to the UK as The Isles I may think them a bit outdated but I would understand what they meant and wouldn't be offended.

Language / 24 hour time telling in Poland vs. other countries [29]

Is it possible that the Polish student might run into a 19 year old American/Canadian/Australian guy who won`t understand 17.00 written on an invitation to a party?

Theoretically it is possible, however anyone who didn't understand that as written would not be welcome at my party due to idiocy.

If it were speaking then that would be different. Saying, "I will meet you at 21 hours" is very different to saying, "I will meet you at 9". However, when written, I would say about 99% of English speaking people would understand.

Life / Are Poles winter lovers? [63]

Are those numbers included with windchill or without?

This is from the thermometer on the window, but it wasn't very windy. Big problems in the country were with electricity lines falling due to huge icicles on the lines, you wouldn't get that if it was windy.

Life / Are Poles winter lovers? [63]

I would say the extremes are worst in Canada

I would agree to an extent. One winter in Kraków I went to work and it was -37 celcius! In the country it was -41. I know this is nothing compared to artic Canada, but think about Canadian cities, how often does it get that low?

Life / Are Poles winter lovers? [63]

I have found a lot of Poles (in Kraków anyway) seem to just go about as normal in winter, maybe just stay in a bit more. Personally, I loved winter in Poland. It's so bitterly cold, but so dry and fresh, and (a big thing from someone from Glasgow) EVERYTHING still works!

This is coming from someone living in a part of Scotland you cannot physically get to if there is too much wind, rain or snow!!

UK, Ireland / What do you like about living in Britain? [134]

but they are popular in scotlan

Amongst tourists exclusively you will find, I am not trying to defend chip shop cuisine, but having worked in one I know that it was only ever prepared for tourists.

Popular it is not, deep fried Pizza however...

Travel / Any Hooters in Poland? [28]

What?? I was saying Roosters food is pretty terrible. I love the food in Hooters, great wings and crab. As for your shooting and friendly fire stuff, I literally have no idea what you are talking about.

Anyone??

UK, Ireland / We live in the UK; my husband is not legal in England [47]

I do feel sorry for the chap and the poster. However, you seemed to know that he was illegal before marriage. Was it not a bit irresponsible to come to the UK where, at the moment, we are cracking down on illegal immigrants. The fact is that what he has done was illegal and, well, there's little that can be done. As was mentioned before, talk to citizen's advice and see if they can get you a decent immigration lawyer. That is if he didn't realise what he was doing was illegal (going on a long shot). If a lawyer can prove he knew what he was doing then there is no option but deportation.

Food / POLISH RECIPES! [287]

Polish shops near me never seem to have this soup; fortunately, there are plenty of shops locally which do :)

Not sure what the soup has to do with Coleslaw, but it doesn't seem to be very Polish as a brand or as a name. Maybe check out a Jewish Deli or something because the brand has a Hebrew sound to it and the name is using non-Polish names.

News / Wal-Mart coming to Poland? [146]

no one (in visited countries) gets even close to our customer service and this is not some kind of patriotic statement, just my personal experience.

I think it's more to do with being different than being worse. In the US you like the very friendly (what I would call over-zealous) approach to customer service. In the UK it's moving that way, but there is still a slight bit more formality in my opinion. You go out to South East Asia and a lot of people still see Western people as money and so they act slightly subserviently (which I am not a fan of at all). On the other hand, you go to France or Italy where the customer service staff feel they are above the customers and will shout at them.

Horses for courses and all that!

Law / Is PLN affected by the rise of silver prices? [4]

Now do you think that recent spike in Ag prices (btw, tonight Ag is up 5.75 % !!! madness ) has any influence on PLN?

If what you say is true (sources would be nice), especially about 25% of Silver being in Poland. Then why on earth would it not have an influence on PLN? It's a bit of a naive question for someone so informed about silver no?

so the bartender remembers to charge premium.

They sure will remember after they've had to climb up some shelves to get it!

Life / "Whiskification" of Poland? [32]

I think the expense is why bars are displaying it up on the top shelf. Makes the place look a bit posher. However, in the places I have worked, single malts don't seem to do so well. Maybe sell one shot every few months. But then, when you compare 7-10zł for a shot of vodka (or another house spirit) to 30-40zł for a shot of single malt...it's just far too overpriced. The gap is too big and it's really just show-offs who would buy it.

UK, Ireland / WRS (Workers Registration Scheme) - Do I need to get one? [6]

For anyone that is interested, my company went to their lawyers to check this, and anyone that was employed after the 1st of December 2010 does not need to fill in the WRS form or pay the fee. Just so ya knows.

Feedback / Why PolishForums? Give us your stories! [60]

There seems to be lots of people on here from all countries, backgrounds and all that. So how did you all find Polish Forums? Was it a search for family, language help, current affairs, etc?

I know I first found it looking for phonetic translations of nice things to say to a girl *cringe* in Polish. But I am glad I did.

Give us your stories!

Life / Only the poor Poles are buying at Biedronka? [32]

I've seen people doing that in Warsaw!

Yeah, I've seen people leaving Biedronka in Alma bags. Although I did it because I always carried a bag with me and Alma was my closest supermarket.

News / 9 year old Polish girl and 10 year old brother killed by World War II bomb [46]

War is a nasty business. It's horrible that these two kids paid the ultimate price for something that has lain dormant for so long. The fact that these people are preaching death to the Germans for it is disgusting.

RIP to the poor kids...and I hope that these few fools don't influence others into thinking that killing innocent people for what their ancestors did is the right way to do things.

Do we want Europe to become a new Palestine?

News / "Shale Gas Revolution" will make Poland a Leading Country in Europe! [202]

Very, very true...but what country can afford to replace their plants every couple of years. The WHO said that Japan took every safety effort in their plant, but there is little to nothing you can do against an earthquake of that magnitude.
