Love / "Marian" complex of Polish women [16]

Off-topic but I've no idea where to ask this. Dtaylor,in one of your profile pictures you're wearing a kilt. Now, the tablecloth on my kitchen table is exactly the same colour and pattern. Should I take it off? :)

and now on topic: and here I thought it would be about this:

Language / Adjective endings for Polish surnames - the role of the suffixes? [8]

Duda is an existing surname, it happens to be mine.

I know. I know some people named Duda too.

Could you just add the suffix?

No you can't. Ski/ska is an adjectival ending and you need to observe the rules of creating adjectives from nouns in Polish. So the adjectival form would be Dudziński. Dudaski wouldn't make any sense, it's against the rules of the language.

if the person is male or female, would their legal last name be different then?

yes

Does it matter what surname it is?

it does- some surnames end in ski/ska and some don't

Could it be done with Duda

Dudziński/Dudzińska is the related ski/ska form of Duda, but it's a separate name, actually existing.

Travel / Will I get instantly laid with my American accent when I speak Polish? [30]

The folks at the airport frown upon copulation on the terminal floor.

Don't forget the airport staff has been properly instructed for every contingency before the Euros and their task is to make the tourist feel welcomed so the five minutes walk might not prove necessary. The football fans are just expected not to block the area around the gates.

Your every fantasy will be fulfilled.

You will get laid alright. Probably in a brother, mind.

lol

History / Why WERE Those Death Camps Built in Poland, Then? [47]

Just tell me one thing. How exactly did Poland, non-existent at that time, offer to sacrifice Jews? Who did that and when? Who was consulted in that matter and made the decision to, as you say, "throw out the payload"?

A simple answer, please.

in government positions to ultimately halt the atrocities for all but a minor few.

What government are you talking about? The General Government?
The area was not a puppet state; its rulers had no goal of collaborating with Poles throughout the war, regardless of their political orientation. The Nazi authorities made a determined effort to avoid even mentioning the name "Poland" in government correspondence. The only exception to this were the German-backed banknotes and coins (called 'zloty' and 'grosz') printed in 1940 in which the word was used for propaganda purposes. The government and administration of the General Government was composed entirely of Germans, with the intent that the area was eventually to become an ethnic German province.[4] According to Heim ins Reich initiative the only locals remaining were to be those of German descent.

You really have no idea, do you?

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

He was recruited by the owner of the team to take the head coach position after he got injured in the NFL..

If they were such racists they wouldn't have employed him at all. Coaches get sacked every day, good ones too. Did they sign a contract with him first and then became racists overnight? Or do you mean to say they had no right to sack him as he is black? now, that's racism.

Genealogy / Where are the Lemkos now? Do they still exist in Poland? [32]

I don't have any personal bonds with the £emkos but it's always sad to see a culture disappear. People need the sense of identity and belonging. We had enough levelling in the communist times and it's good to see the smaller groups rebound now. Maybe the success of Lemon will convince the old £emko farmers that it's not a waste of time to teach their kids the language. And the music is very good, simply.

A young £emko musician and his band called Lemon won the latest Polish edition of Must Be the Music. They're basing on the £emko musical tradition and sing in the £emko language too.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

For these people the far right provides them with a sense of self through patriotism, in an uncertain world when you can't define who and what you are it is easier to define 'the other' negatively, thus reflecting on you positively.

Very true, unfortunately. Very good post on the whole. I see the pendulum going right mostly for the youths, born after 1990.

Life / Require a few pointers on Do's and Dont's in Poland [25]

Never heard of it o_O It's definitely not like that where I live (Southern Poland). God, I would never consider a man stretching out his hand first rude or bad mannered - quite the opposite! xDStrzyga, where do you live?

It's not where I live, it's the good old rules of savoir-vivre, dying fast nowadays, at least in informal relations and among the younger generation. Still, they remain valid in business, diplomacy and formal situations and some people do observe them in everyday living.

a short-term job agreement, you may pay it out of your own pocket but you do not have to.

Depends on the type of contract (umowa zlecenie or umowa o dzieło). But if you run your own business, you must pay it.

Nothing wrong with handshaking, it's just that between a man and a woman the woman should initiate it so a man stretching out his hand first may be considered rude or bad mannered. Young people don't always observe the rule but, like Jason, you may find yourself in an uncomfortable situation. Among guys it's ok.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

online tax returns

You're late. It was introduced a couple of years ago.

laundrette

I think somebody has already tried that, there was a thread on it - it didn't work too well - Poles are probably too used to doing washing at home, a washing machine is a must.

But I like the idea of mobile tyre service.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

Strawberries

As of today, 12 zł/kg in my neck of woods.
But I think in a week it will be 6-8 zł.

Apples are next. 2-3 zł now, out of season.

But the fairy tale ends when it comes to manufactured products.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Y'know, I think the merit of this post is being lost on some of you.

No, I still don't get it. So where exactly does the line go separating the "rich and powerful", responsible for all the evil deeds in history, from the "fairly ordinary people" whose inventions contributed to the well-being of the mankind? How much money do you need to fall into the first category? And what about an average Joe, who murders the family next door because he's found their dog irritating, compared to the likes of Queen Elizabeth I or lord Byron? It's pure absurd. It just doesn't work like this. You can't be "proudly British" (or "proud anything", for that matter) selectively, only when it suits you. Take the thick with the thin or leave it all out.

Strzyga...another idiot blaming every English man for Yalta!!! (poles have this 'blame' everybody else culture! blame the russians, blame the germans, blame the jews, blame the english, blame the french...blame it on the sunshine, blame it on the boogie)

Why are you getting so abusive? I'm not discussing Yalta here. I just used your own words. Could be the Falkland War, or the Boer war with the original concentration camps, or anything else for that matter. What I'm trying to discuss is this:

I can choose what to be proud of.

I don't think so. Your selective concept of "pride in the Britishness" doesn't appeal to me in the least. You, personally, have as little - or as much - in common with the fathers of the industrial revolution as with the British soldiers in the Empire colonies. So, take it all or leave it all. That's all I'm saying. And please, leave out the unfounded abuse. If I want to discuss history with you, I'll use another thread.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

as for boat building the Polish goverment has been threatened with action on numerous occasions regarding state handouts to the Polish shipyards

I'm talking about yacht building companies, privately owned, not about the big shipyards. Have you ever had a look at the link I provided? Here are some more:

business.inquirer.net/6893/smooth-sailing-for-made-in-poland-yachts
synfo.com/IYR/MarketRpts/BusRptPoland69.pdf

Check out Mantra, Delphia, Sunreef, among others.

The top and bottom of it is that the UK and the British people created the world that we live in through the Empire and through the industrial revolution.

So you feel British when talking of the industrial revolution which took place 200 years ago, but you're not British anymore when it comes to Yalta and South African genocide, which happened 150 years later? That's a very convenient stance.

Off the top of your head name me 10 Polish things that are exported and sold abroad by foreign consumers?

Yachts and boats, for one.
en.poland.gov.pl/Polish,yachts,and,shipbuilding,in,Poland,12686.html

It's a Polish gov. promotional site, but you're free to check other sources.

by the time the Polish wage levels get anywhere near to the UK then you'll see two things... jobs returning to the west of europe from Poland

Isn't it a contradiction? Jobs will return to the West of Europe only if the cost of labour is lower there than in Poland.
