Law / On the spot payment with Police (ticket) in Poland? [25]

You can't get an ID card as an EU national - we get a piece of A5 paper instead.

Sorry but there is such a thing, a Karta pobytu and it is recognised as ID and I can travel with it too. Just came back from UK using it

Work / City and Guilds Pitman examinations [3]

I have been out of the teaching profession for ages now so I have a question about the above exams which I'm hoping someone can answer.

My wifes employer wants to send her to do a C2 level exam and cant decide between the cambridge and Pitman exam. How do theyt differ? Is the pitman recognised around the world?

Please help me cos ultimately the decision is in my wifes hands not her employers

USA, Canada / Differences in How Polish People Raise a Child and How Americans Raise a Child [149]

The situation Elmhurst tom described is exactly what goes on at my house.

By all my neighbours and my wifes family I am considered a very bad father. Basically my child fell over the other day and cut his knee. He came crying to me and I put a small plaster on it and gave him a sweet and he was right as rain and continued playing. Thewife got on the phone to her mum and they were cursing me rotten that I didnt do sth more.

Also, I would not allow the child in bed with us after the age of 6 mths nad now when he sleeps over babcias he even requests his own room (when u see the in law, I wouldnt want to be in bed with her either). They curse me and ask me what I have turned this child into and I just tell them 'a healthy, young man', not a snivelling litlle brat like his cousin.

My child got into the habit of biting. His babcia and mum would just tell him to stop it and give huim a hug so biting became associated with the pleasure of a hug. Only onec he bit me and itwas the last time because I bit him back, not too hard but just enough to teach him a lesson. If he starts pullin hair I will do the same too. I am a monster for doing this apparently.

Polish parents are certainly too overprotective. They will use the dotor for the slightest splutter. My wife's sisters' kid has lost most of his toddlerhood cos he was in and out of the doctor for the slightest ail. They paid for a preschool for him and he has been twice cos he always comes back ill. Babaies dont need to be wrapped up in cotton wool, they need to explore the world and all its perils

Law / People who have their businesses in Poland must update or face a fine [19]

I found out today that all people who have a dzialnosc must update it by the end of the year or face a hefty fine. I know this applies in Trojmiasto but ud better check other areas of Poland.

I was talking to a freind who works for urzad miasta and he told me they are hoping to catch a load of ppl who dont update their dzialnosc and hit them with heavy fines.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Cant wait for monday yummmmmm

gumishu:
English cuisine

Sorry, that made me laugh :)

Whats the joke about?? If you wanna eat cheaply in any country the food is ****. In Poland, if u want to you can live off pizza and Kebab. Tell me what is so **** about English food? Everytime I ask this to Poles who make fun of Eng food they cannot answer, they just say that theyve heard about it.

Bear in ming that Delia Smith, Nigella Lawson, Gary Rhodes, Rick Stein, Grdon Ramsey etc all come from the UK and are world famous.

Poland has that wannabe Polae form france and that fat guy who cooks on the streets of the world. Hardly world famous.

Love / I want to meet and date a Polish man [77]

Love making is not just a physical act, with this Polish guy it is extremely emotional.

He probably cries when he thinks of his Polish wife and kids at home in Poland

Law / Can I take the Polish written test and obtain a Polish driving licence? [28]

De facto, someone with the required residency papers will have a PESEL. Why do you keep trying to insist on proof of this? It may very well be that other driving centres (particularly in Warsaw) are being more flexible, but if you can't put a PESEL on the form, then they won't accept it in Poznan.

It used to be like this cos the offices here used to get scared when someone didnt have a PESEL, they simply didnt know what to do. Now people are finally realising that stuff can be done without this pesel and most places will accept just a passpoet or id card number. If you called the office they would indeed say you need a PESEL cos its protocol but if it was pushed they would have to accept the application without the PESEL - thats the beauty of the EU

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

None of us Ex pats will ever know Polish enough to understand the subtleties of the language, neither will Polish ppl in ENGLISH.

It really rocked my boat when ppl sid that the Polish version of Shrek was funnier than the English version, but these people couldt totally get the English version so its bound to be less funny for them.

LAnguage is also an issue of culture. We as ex pats will only be able to gin a certain level of understanding of Polish because we have been brought up in an English culture and vice versa

Law / Can I take the Polish written test and obtain a Polish driving licence? [28]

I have a PESEL now but thats cos the rules changed. When I first came here it was very diff.

The Pesel problem in poland lies in the fact that the computer systems in this country can't yes process anything without the entering of the PESEL. As soon as it comes to this screen then the computer cannot move forward to the next screen. THis can be remedied by just writing any combination of 11 numbers as the computer cannot recognise whether this is a valid pesel or not, all it sees is 11 digits. The obstacle here is convincing the computer operator to do this for you.

Now the programs are being changed to accept passports so things are becoming easier.

Law / Can I take the Polish written test and obtain a Polish driving licence? [28]

The defining factor is that you have to have a PESEL to get a driving licence in Poland - if you don't have this, then you won't get a licence.

I got min e without a Pesel. In fact they were happy just to see my passport and evidenc that I lived in POland. Its very difficult to get a PESEL here, one has to live here for some period of time.

Work / I'm interested in teaching in Poland and I need some help. [33]

Its amazing how many teachers I have seen in the Trojmiasto area write wrong spellings on the board. The 'there, their' mistake is a classic. I have aslo see teachers writing plane instead of plain and recieved instead of received.

Most of the small private schools around here (not talking the chains likle bell and profi lingua) employ native speakers of English who can hardly string a senetence together themselves and the schools charge more for the students to have lessons with these people. In my teaching days, I had to observe a lesson with a new teacher who spent most of the lesson asking the students how their weekends were and checking homework.

Genealogy / Changing my name to a Polish one [35]

Polish heritage (and Finnish, Croatian, Slovenian and Roma ["Gypsy"])

Not another one. How can someone be from so many different nationalities. Ur American just accept it and get over the hangup you have.

As for this new name sounding cool, Czeslaw doesnt even sound cool in poland let alone elsewhere in the world. Have you ever even stepped foot on Polish soil? In fact, you will sound liek such a t**** when you have to tell people ur name and ur not even Polish.

GROW UP

Food / Poland known for their sweets? [67]

I was afraid (and Polish chocolates are a serious matter to me) that similar fate would await the 155-yr old Wedel brand when it was taken over by Cadbury.

This is a great tnig, Cadbury is some of the best chocolate I have ever tasted.

Look at this site for some classic British sweets. Ahh the memories

Life / 80% of Polish people are boring or can't party, why? [179]

My experience of the Polish partying is that they have to be pushed to enjoy it. I hev been out with a wide range of Polish people and most of the guys stand around with a drink in their hand looking at their watches. The girls are a differnt story. They like to dance.

Im interested in what Sadieann said about them being crazy. A crazy night out is one that culminates in something wild, skinny dipping in the Baltic sea etc. The Poles I go out with are far from crazy, they are more conventional if anything. When staying in mazury and drunk I suggested we all go skinny dippuing in the lake. It was as if i asked them to cut their right arms off. Geez chill out

Life / Britains got talent vs mam talent [15]

I have been a keen follower this year of Britains got talent. It has revealed an impressive amount of talent and the competition for the final is strong. Mam talent on the tother hand, was rather weak and the guys who won were just a copy cat act from a prformance I saw by cirque d' soleil a number of years ago.

Anyone been watching this???

Your views please
