Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

For the most part the speed limit in Germany is as fast as your car will go, The majority of German Autobahns are derestricted although there is an unofficial limit of 155 mph. (kill joys :) )

About half of the autobahn is now limited to 130kph because apparently going faster will hurt the earth and cause people to kill school children or something.

Law / Visa Stamp if you overstay (American with a Polish Wife) [29]

Interestingly, the Spanish authorities could care less about all this so we came back and now here we are.

I'm sure everyone has better things to do than deport an American. I know a couple of Americans that have been deported from the Czech Republic (after Schengen came into effect). Used to be, you could cross the border, get a new stamp, and be good for another 90 days. Now you can only stay as a tourist for 180 days out of the year. I'm fairly certain that going to the townhall won't do you any good.

History / Teaching our kids about Poland's History [57]

I'm from poland and I think all schools in US should teach polish history.

Good for you.

I think that all schools in Poland should teach Guatemalan history.

News / Crucifixes to stay in Polish schools [364]

Of course we don't see Chrstians walking around wearing headscarfs and it is strange to wear it anywhere outside desert regions

Lots of Christians in the countryside wear headscarfs. Most of those older ladies also wore them when they were young....

UK, Ireland / Female health in Britain - Polish view [105]

My experience is that they are good and they are available in Poland

Don't you have to be referred to a specialist by a GP in Poland before being able to visit one?

Just curious. I personally haven't had any experience with Polish gynecologists, but I've heard nothing but terrible things.

Travel / Poland from a Persian Tourist's Perspective [269]

Here we are, good way to frame up the conflict

These guys would be celebrated as resisting the occupation had they been Palestinian.

Not hidden, not covered up, but celebrated.

That's the difference that I see. In the end, you've still got corpses all over the place.

Law / What do you think about the Gerlach company? [28]

I have a bit of Gerlach in the kitchen. Good quality, a bit pricey. The brand is decent here, but I think it's pretty much unknown outside of Poland, you'd have to build the brand.

News / Do you think Germany will stop buying out Polish media? [15]

The overwhelming majority of Polish press is owned by Polish interests. Some of the dying local periodicals were purchased by VGP. Axel Springer is a minority stakeholder in the paper that they started... And Fakt, well, if you get your news from there, I don't think it really matters who is printing it.

Travel / Krakow a safe and friendly city for foreigners? Read this! [161]

There was no defense treaty but there was presidential election, during which Roosevelt made promises and gladly took photo-ops in front of a map with Poland's borders promised to the Polish-American voters to be the same as pre-1939

Wait, a Presidential candidate made vague promises to voters and didn't keep them? Stop the presses!

Thisa forum is well short on Poles living in my country.

Interestingly enough, most of the Poles that live here are much more into the history threads and tend to stay away from the "life in Poland" threads. For expat Poles, it seems to be the exact opposite.

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

I've said it already - over 50% of EU people are learning english. That three times more than any other language.

51% vs 32% that's not a huge gap.

And once 50% of EU citizens can speak English to a level that is higher than directions to the train station, let me know :)

Maybe in near future the US will talk mainly spanish, who knows...lingua francas are changing and then nobody in Europe will ever talk about english being the #1 in Europe either...

That's true actually. Voter registration forms are available in Spanish. 50 years ago, no one would have thought that the majority of pamphlets and brochures would be dual language. Product labeling, billboards, radio...

The problem is that there is an assumption that one can quickly learn a second language enough to communicate on the same level as a native speaker.

Technical documentation is a good example. I would rather get documentation in perfect Korean and have it translated, than in "English" from someone who can't string together a single coherent sentence.

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

that was long time ago. I wish that... unix, for example was invented in Germany. Even if now you do find Germans making big new strides, they're most probably working for American companies.

Hey, that's a good example. Take a look at the names of the contributors for linux packages. Lots of umlauts in that lot..

What about the quality of roads and infrastructure? Health care? You can't privatize everything. Well, actually you can, but I think we've all seen the wonderful results of privatizing certain businesses, haven't we?

Sure you can. Name one public entity that has needed less money year on year to produce a good or service. Good luck.

when our birthrates are dwindling towards zero already

Population reversal would be great.

Yea, you can translate couple of words, but until Microsoft, and Apple, and ATnT Bell labs.. etc. etc. start doing their business in German, why bother?

In Germany, they do.

You might want to start looking at the comments (if there are any)... You'll probably see a lot more Portuguese, German, and Russian that you might imagine.

But seriously, technical documentation is a good example of why you should pay a professional translator that knows what they're doing.

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

I gave programming languages as one example, but there are many more instances, like electronic industry, that have already adopted english as an official language. And in most cases, it has nothing to do with UK.

You gave C++ as an example with real deep English like "bool" and "int"...and "false". And that can be fixed with the compiler...

I gave programming languages as one example, but there are many more instances, like electronic industry, that have already adopted english as an official language.

I think the lawn mowing industry has picked up Spanish as an official language.

This would make about as much sense as making Spanish an official language in the US.

Let me ask you, and I really don't know the answer, but all the most common programming languages, are they translated from english to other languages? A simple example, can you code C++ in german?

Not that difficult to replace a couple of words. You could do that with whatever compiler you're using.

And you'd get umlauts...and drop letters too. type become typ. sweet.

Think long run(regarding cost).Ppl are already being forced to so many things that I don't think it would even matter. If you would want goverment job in any of EU countries you would have to speak english.Plain and simple.

You would have to change the way contracts are enforced... in the government and private sector.

I still don't think that makes much sense as most people in the EU currently speak German on a day to day basis.

That's what I am talking about. This is YOUR money ppl and it could be spent much more efficiently.

Right, by saying that this is an idiotic idea. To say that free trade is good, but the rest of it is crap. Parallel governments are nothing but overhead.
