Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

You'll know if you hit one, especially if it's the middle of the night.

Tickets don't seem to make it out of Germany though, just like everywhere else.

That said, my car starts making noises about 100m before I pass a camera.. very odd.

Genealogy / My father Jozef Nawrot, he played football for the Polish national side - any relatives in Krakow? [4]

my father Jozef Nawrot

Really? Wow.

I just read up, and found this in wikipedia :(

"Pozostał na emigracji do końca życia, nie utrzymywał kontaktów ze znajomymi w kraju."

It also mentioned that towards the end of his career, he played for Polonia Warsaw, perhaps it might be worthwhile to contact them in addition to Legia?

He took part in Market Garden as well, if you have information on who he was with, that might be a good route for finding information as well.

UK, Ireland / Female health in Britain - Polish view [105]

Have you ever been treated in a Russian hospital? Just saying, again, it's a personal experience thing. I wouldn't want my child born in Barnaul, getting xrays left a bad enough taste in my mouth.

It's not aggression, it's just simple numbers. Why not use the Czech Republic as an example? They're doing it right. The Russians most certainly are not. The Scandinavians know what they're doing, so do the rich Asian countries.

There has to be some reason that babies born in Poland are twice as likely as dying at birth than Singaporean babies. Also has to be some reason that Russian babies are nearly three times more likely to die than Polish babies.

Just numbers.

But, if you want to compare things, Russia has even higher medical and hygiene policies.

Bwahahaha

This all probably explains why the infant mortality rate is high in the UK, lower in Poland, and even lower in Russia... Wait, it's the other way around...strike that comment.

As in do not believe in anything you should be approached with caution because you are unpredictable and can turn rabbit no time - just watch it!

Heh, I worship the sun. Comes out every morning, keeps me warm, provides the planet with the energy that it needs to support life.

All hail the the fission ball in the sky!

News / Crucifixes to stay in Polish schools [364]

Even young Poles today openly cross themselves in public. Somewhat behind the times to put it politely. How big a peasant do they want to be? In UK where the church is much less prominent, they'd be "weirdos" or "Jesus nuts".

That's ok with me, I just treat them just like everyone else that believes that there is an invisible man controlling everything. The rituals and the jewelry provide good warning.

Law / Visa Stamp if you overstay (American with a Polish Wife) [29]

US border patrol officers do their job.(if that is what you meant).

I meant EU border guards.

Anyway, every single post in this thread says it's illegal, most with suggestions to leave. Now, would you get the same response on a Polish forum from Poles living in the US? ...probably not. You were saying something about double standards?

Life / Wearing "strange" things for poles and consequences, is it true? [44]

damnit i live my big poofy jacket. well i am not very loud. i just find the fact that people consider a boy wearing one or two earrings "gay" absurd in 2010, and i personally think you wont get beaten up for it or something, but its always better to ask :p

I used to wear two earrings a while back and didn't have any problems, that was back in 2004.

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

One firm, Wood Mackenzie, estimates Poland has 48 trillion cubic feet of reserves in areas deemed unconventional but accessible through an extraction technique developed in the United States that now produces 50 percent of the U.S. natural gas output.

Enough to supply the EU for nearly 2 years!

Yea, I'm not seeing a lot of export there...

Law / Visa Stamp if you overstay (American with a Polish Wife) [29]

The law is the law and I hope everyone is treated same way ,no matter where they come from. How come when Americans break immigration law overseas its no big deal but when foraigners do it in the US they are being called criminals???

I guess because the border guards aren't doing their jobs here?

UK, Ireland / Female health in Britain - Polish view [105]

Not really, In June 2009 the Advisory Committee on Cervical Screening reviewed the policy of starting screening at age 25 and agreed unanimously there should be no change in the current policy.

Stupid question from the audience, why is there an age limit?

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

I was sat on the A2 / A7 Junction for 1 hour this morning.

The autobahn is amazing, it has the ability to transform from a race track to the worlds largest parking lot in a matter of hours.
