News / Polish Stalinist criminal hiding abroad supports KOD [101]

Then your doubts would make sense.

Then what about this?

tvn24.pl/wiadomosci-z-kraju,3/wielu-gromowcow-straci-wyzsze-emerytury-mam-zal-do-dowodcow,698606.html

(people who were serving in the military at the end of the PRL are getting their pensions cut even if almost all their career was serving free Poland).

Why does PiS come up with such poorly writen legislation? (they're not the only ones)

what legislation? Why badly?

The famous slashing of pensions of state security agents from the PRL. As usual it was poorly written and affects a bunch of people it shouldn't have. Want to cut pensionsof those guilty of specific crimes? Great! I'm on board, but at least write the law so that it doesn't have a lot of collateral damage.

That what is all about - not about what he did or didn't in the past.

If he just owned up to what he did I'd be for forgiveness, but his "I was helping the opposition" with no evidence whatsoever that's irritating.

The PRL compromised everyone so there were no angels in 1989, I get that, and I'm fine with those who want to repent and not have their PRL experience held over their head (unless there's evidence of real crimes) but to play the injured saint is just too much.

It's probably a typo, you'll notice that it's only the one time, all the other examples of her name aren't declined

córka przyszłej premier Ewy Kopacz (gen)

w rządzie Ewy Kopacz (gen)

Poza Ewą Kopacz (instr)

I noticed they also used the old -ówna (daughter of) suffix for her daughter to keep the two separate.

News / Polish Stalinist criminal hiding abroad supports KOD [101]

I would suggest a separate Piotrowicz thread but I'm sure the dangerously insane and stupid moderators would attach it to some other completely unrelated topic.

But the case is interesting. All of the evidence is that he participated in the prosecution of dissidents and the evidence that he didn't is that..... he says so.

tvn24 went to his old stomping grounds to talk to those involved in the opposition movement when he was a prosecutor and they all agreed that if he was "helping" dissidents they had no knowledge (and they were sure they would know about it if he was so involved).

I wouldn't much care except that it reflects badly on recent PiS legislation and Piotrowicz's unbearable smug self-rightousness.

News / What will drive Poland after 2020 - when Eu funding dries up? [96]

were the only three EU members to open their borders in 2004 allowing Poles and others to work legally.

Because eternal bad neighbors Germany and France did everything to keep them out of the labor market.

That was a temporary aberration (from mass producers of European aberrations).

News / What will drive Poland after 2020 - when Eu funding dries up? [96]

I think the idea is supposed to be that EU member states do whatever they can best do to help other member states

Tell that to Germany, regarding Greece.

In the case of Poland, a country which has spare housing

Define "spare housing". Is it sitting empty or is it being used by the owners occasionally. And of course, housing is just the first step, then there is furnishing and food and possibly education and healthcare etc etc etc. Poland can't afford a decent social safety net for its own citizens and you want it to prioritize a million new residents over citizens?

within living memory seen millions of its own citizens helped as refugees

Which is why Poland is ready to help in cases of real need, rather than manufactured human trafficking need. Need I remind you that Poland has already tried helping real Syrian refugees including free housing and education and they almost all ran off to Germany without so much as a shukran or see ya later?

given legal worker status as economic migrants

Where? There is no migration within the EU, there is the free movement of citizens. You're mixing apples and bricks.

There is no refugee crisis apart from Syria (and most of them are in Turkey and neighboring countries), a very large majority of "refugees" seeking "asylum" in Europe now are fleeing the bad governments created by their own bad cultures that they will do their best to import to Europe. Aiding in that process is neither moral nor humane.

Life / What is the reaction of Poles to Russian? [95]

quite a few Russians on the internet who seemed like they did "give a ****" about Poland

Well I think the current semi-official Russian position is that Poland caused WWII through it's intransigent refusal to meet entirely reasonable German demands. I've seen that position outlined by a number of Russians (Putain's aςς-lιckers) writing in English.

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

The whole Brexit thing is becoming quite surreal.

Yes, what's interesting is that the more pro-EU a person is the less they seem interested in democracy....

If they had a sense of humor and could get the joke then it would be really funny.

For one thing it's supposed to go along with Merkel's kabuki play about "resettling" migrants in other countries.

For the other it's supposd to fork out money - almost the entire refuge "crisis" is a financial con - "non-profit" groups being paid to import people into Europe (that mosty have no chance of any kind of life with dignity there) and then they get paid to "help" them once they're in situ.

It's a modern version of slavery - selling people for money and no one who supports it has the moral high ground.

I do seem to remember references to the government of Ewy Kopacza

I'm pretty sure you didn't.

for women, even Polish surnames that don't end in an 'a' don't seem to be declined either.

The basic rule is last names for women that are adjectives or femine nouns are declined and others aren't. There might be an exception or two I'm unaware of....

Poland can refuse to help EU member states which are having problems with the numbers of migrants arriving on their shores

This is a money making racket at the cost of the European taxpayer! Why are you in favor of human trafficking?

If the feminine, ending in a 'a', surname is declined for males then why isn't it the same the other way around?

That's a confusing question, but...

Obama (declined like a feminine noun ending in -a, like the name Wajda) for both genders.

Kennedy (declined like a masculine adective without a feminine equivalent) that type of name isn't declined for women in Polish. In the past it might be possible to add -owa (wife of) but that sounds old fashioned or even kind of insulting now.

Neither Jackie nor Michelle gets declined either.

My impression is that he's chasing her until she catches him.... (It's a common dynamic between Polish women and foreign men).

Before you have done the deed

Mentioning the last few letters of her name is a stretch - how do you think he'll react to that?! You've probably just undone weeks of work for her...

Language / Collection of learning resources for learning the Polish language [129]

Thing is that I learn better by following the logic rather than learning it by heart

Me too.

The old Teach Yourself Polish by corbridge-patkaniowska was pretty good. Some of the language is very dated, but the structural descriptions are very good and it drips the structure rather than dumping declination tables on your head at the beginning.

It seems to be hard to find, however. The updated Teach Yourself book is crap - just a glorified phrasebook.

Anything descriptive by Oscar Swan is also good (and maybe hard to find)

Online, I've seen lots worse than this: mowicpopolsku.com/polish-grammar

It seems to be originally in German with an English translation added but the little I checked out seemed okay.

The reason for my discretion should be obvious from my statement

Contrary to popular belief, we are not mind readers. Just regard your treatment here as desensitization. If you think we're prying and nosy, then just wait till you meet her freinds and family (or her for that matter - once she's decided she's locked you down).

Just don't say you weren't warned....

. I would never dream of insulting someone online without just cause

You just did! First you asked for help and then would not give enough information so that people could actually help by you and you clearly implied we're a bunch of snoops for asking for the necessary information.

I find that highly rude and presumptive. If you're going to ask for help, be cooperative!

Sorry for my vagueness. I'm just a really private person

We're not spying dumbαss, get over yourself. The ending of her name (in this context) might be -y, -i or -ii if you won't give the last few letters then you're on your own.

She's going to love the book - even moreso with a dedication in her mother tongue.

Not if you screw it up cause your too weird to give people who know enough informaton to actually help you....

Lots of luck in the relationship: Polish people in relationships tend to be nosy (not obsessive or jealous but they want to know your business - it's a cultural thing)

Language / Perfective vs Imperfective - grammar [150]

'the dog pee-ed or wee-ed on the rug'. Or we might say 'the dog wet the floor' in Ireland.

I might say the "the dog went on the rug" (though that could also be number two). "The dog did his busines on the rug" (common in the American south) would surely be number two.

Life / Electricity, water, gas charge in Warsaw, Poland. [17]

There will always be someone at your place of work or your school who can help. Of course, they should be properly compensated for their efforts.

I agree with everything you wrote except the last. Many foreigners would interpret that in monetary terms which would/could offend many Poles. Of course the offer of monetary compensation should be made at the beginning which the Polish person will probably decline. The person helped should then buy some kind of small gift as a token of appreciation.... and be ready to help in return when the Polish person needs something.

looks lke we are both in trouble with Ziemo

Oh.... woe is me! How will I ever recover from that crushing blow??!!?!?

Perhaps a small formal dinner with guest of honor Queen Margarethe of Denmark?

A celebrity golf tournament (with the voice actors from Futurama)?

A fireworks display over Sieradz? Those poor people do deserve a break.

A royal hunt on the Mongolian steppes?

Decisions, decisions.....

I'm sure the original thinking wasn't that crude, but... it does make a useful mnemonic device (not exactly mnemonic but that's close enough).

Will you ever forget or get confused now?

The circle is a........

Or.... both are very stylized drawings of human plumbing.... for number one at least

Or.... to be less crude, men have sharp edges, women have curves....

Which brings me to another question, where did the symbol O for female and a triangle for male toilets originate.

Confused me too in the beginning, until I began thinking structuraly...... then it was easy to remember.

An equally modern term is ubikacja

That has... institutional connotations to me, do Polish people talk about ubikacja in their homes? Not sure what native speakers would say.....

c. undertsnad toilets but generally have a blank expression when they hear gents, lavatory or loo.

Also in Polish toaleta refers to the room and not the thing you sit on (as the word toilet does in the US) which is sedes in Polish.

It took me some time to get used to asking if there was a toaleta, since in US English asking where the toilet is would be really crude. I kept telling myself that they're just false friends but it wasn't that easy.... And I imagine most Poles would not understand "Excuse me, I have to go talk to a man about a horse"....

WC (wu ce) is also still used in Poland though I don't think the term was ever common in the US. Lavatory (to me) has connotations of transport, it's what you'd find on a train or plane.

The outhouse is also called a wygódka and sławojka.

And wychodek... (from wychodzić - to leave, exit)
