Law / The Euro, is it a good idea for Poland? [66]

Yeah, nice dark wooden frame and on green felt, looks good.
I even have the half penny
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halfpenny_%28Irish_decimal_coin%29

The coin was removed from circulation and demonetised on January 1, 1987.

My local shop keeper was soooo mean she would tear a jelly baby in half, for your half penny hahahahahahaha

I have the old Irish currency framed hahaha.

They are gonna be worth a lot later on, they said. :D

Law / The Euro, is it a good idea for Poland? [66]

introduction of the Euro in Holland, caused the prices to go up quickly

Same in Ireland.

Before friends would drive to Slovakia and fill their cars full of alcohol, in the doors of their car etc... because it was so cheap there.

Now, after Slovakia has joined the Euro, the Slovakians are all coming here to shop because it is much cheaper.
It should be noted that the Zlopty did drop about 20% against the Euro.
And that the credit crunch came in at the same time Slovakia joined the Euro currency.
So it is not as clear cut as I first stated.

I would like one currency all over Europe.
When I was in Ireland I did not feel part of the E.U. until the Euro currency came in.
There is a feeling of "us"(Poland) and "them"(E.U.) here in Poland.
When the Euro becomes used in day to day transactions, there is a psychological change.
Also it makes it easier to travel and you don't feel like you are being ripped off.

P.S. the Dutch Guilder was the greatest looking currency I had ever seen :)

Hi dnz,

Great idea,
I think they are very cool cars :)

I hear Polish people are very sentimental about Maluchs, as it is normally the first car they had.
The fewer there are the more attractive they become.
Unfortunately I will not be near Poznan for some time.
But I wish you all the luck in the world on your project.
Check this out Maluch

UK, Ireland / Poland continues to milk Ireland dry. [129]

RN was born with a silver spoon up his hole.
He is too young to know that Ireland was a poor country and blames anyone for his problems.
The truth is, even that statement is giving him too much credit, you have read his posts, you have seen his hypocrisies, he loves attention and will do anything for it, watch how he insults to provoke.

He is a boring little disturbed boy, nothing more, how do I know? he is here talking shite.

I am here to get an opposing view.

no your not.

I could post on an Irish forum, but I would be preaching to the choir in the vatican!

You keep getting banned from the irish forum and have to rejoin using a new user name.

One good thing about this free movement of labour lark, is that the Irish nation is free of SeanBM. Hopefully forever. He is a disgrace to every Irish person who has ever lived and those yet to be born. I highly suspect he was forced to leave Ireland by his own community.

I didn't know you cared.

At least when the Brits where ass raping us they where honest about it.

How were you ass raped by a Brit? hahaha

the Irish government(Fianna Fail) had bought 3.5 million tons of carbon from.,,,bla bla Poland

So what.
You are such a baby.

Polish Mom claims daughter got pregnant from swimming in pool!

Maybe it was the ghost of the swimming pool?.

Oh no, because ghost's can't do that.
They can only mess up your CD collection and do a spot of interior design.

For book lovers, I recommend Massolit Books & Café in Krakow for second hand and new books.
They do not sell beer it is not that type of place :)

It is a very cool American/Jewish/Polish bookshop and Café.
With a retro feel and lots of 1920's jazz and blues played at respectable levels.

So if you are in Krakow and fancy reading a good book, pop in.
I personally love this place, I used to spend hours reading the many books there.
And don't be afraid to go through the door at the back of the café into the main library section.

I am not affiliated and I do not know who runs this wonderful café/bookshop.

Also they have the nicest bagels in town.
So if you are looking for a quiet time, good environment and a comfy place to read, a short walk from the market square, look no further.

I was debating whether I should put this on the net as it is one of my favourite oasis :) but life is to be shared :)

They have a huge collection of books, mainly in the English language.
I also had my very first bagel in this place about nine years ago.

Travel / Polish Architecture [147]

These are houses in Myslenice, 35KM south of Krakow.
The first two photos are of a modern house with a tached roof, simply a wonderful design and arched to make maximum use of the sun.

The second photo is of a house I am not particularly mad about but this classical "castle look" is very popular here in Poland. When your home really is your castle :)

I do like the roof tiling when it flow over the roof windows like an eye.

The last one seems to be one of the oldest houses in Myslenice.
There is a lot of intricate designs carved in to the wood but this photo does not show it so well.

History / What are the key features of the Polish Eagle? [56]

The crown on it's head is important.
And the colours White and Red.
The commies tried to chip off the crown from the the symbol of the eagle on walls and statues.
But wait for someone else's reply, as I am not certain.

History / The Celts in Poland. [71]

Celtic version of the Welsh National Anthem in Welsh.

Very nice, thanks.
I can't understand a word of Welsh, it is very different to Gaelic Irish, to my untrained ear.
But please add to this thread as you see fit, show us something from Celtic Wales, time to shine :)

is this thread about me?

If you consider yourself a Celt, then YES :)
My hair is almost completely grey, women like it and that is all that concerns me about that particular point;)

the name 'Legnica' (Polish town; German version is 'Leignitz') is associated with Celtic god Lug.

Interesting.

Lúgh/Lug

Lugus diffusion in Celtic religion is apparent from the number of place names in which his name appears, occurring across the Celtic world. The most famous of these are the cities of Lugdunum (the modern French city of Lyon) and Lugdunum Batavorum (the modern city of Katwijk, 10 kilometers to the west of Leiden)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_mythology#L.C3.BAgh.2FLug

I am very interested in Celtic mythology, perhaps when I get a chance I will mention a couple.

Oohh, I like it, I like it.

Next year, Admin could pay for the moderators to paint-ball us members, as a kind of anger management training course but probably he will just want them to paint his 6 star luxury duplex apartment in the Wawel castle.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

Seanus, every time I read your posts, they seem to contradict themselves.
That post above is a perfect example, everything you say is coherent up until the last two lines, which completely contradict what you have just said.

Maybe I am not reading you properly but this happens to me often when reading your posts.

Travel / Recommendations for Krakow and Myślenice [80]

Near the centre of Krakow just over the bridge is were the Jewish Getto was in the Podgorze district
There are strange eerie sculptings of chairs there now.
Symbolising the furniture and other personal objects that the Getto's Jews were forced to leave behind as they were transported to various death camps.

Near by is Schindler's factory,

"He is credited with saving almost 1,200[1][2] Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his enamelware and ammunitions factories"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oskar_Schindler

It is preparing a permanent exhibition entitled "Krakow during Nazi Occupation (1939-1945)"

The grand opening is scheduled for September 2009.
