Work / Is it true that foreigners in Poland can teach English without any teaching certificate? [30]

took a one week tefl course and then went off to the Gulf of Thailand area, touring the surrounding countries and 'teaching'. He left school with a grade E(or worse) in English.

yes I had a friend who took three attempts at English O level, failing each time, failed a TEFL course, and went off to Taiwan and did really well playing hangman etc for a living....

More recently a mate has gone to Vietnam armed with nothing but a business suit and is already employed by two schools....

You can pick up a tefl cert. over a weekend's course and advanced level takes another two days.

not a proper one, though, modafinil.
A real tefl course that employers recognize (RSA/Camb/Trinity) takes four or five weeks of intensive study and daily teaching practice, and it is quite possible to fail it. And it IS only an entry level qualification. Most employers would ask for an A or B pass in this, or/plus a minimum of two years experience.

As you say there are some joke courses, but any school that took these seriously would not be worth working for.
I think anyone attempting to teach English without a proper qualification would no longer find any work anywhere in Europe.
Could try Vietnam though, from what I have heard..:)

Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

You must live a sheltered or horseblinkeredd life if you don't see all this.

take a classroom 30 or 20 years ago and you were far more likely to see violent child hating psychopaths in charge. Was that a good thing too?

Not to mention what might be going on in the home under the cover of respectable married parents. i suppose for you that is also a good thing.

As for organised religion, especially of the Roman Catholic variety, well let's not start..;)
Many people are so 'sheltered and horseblinkered' they refuse to see this.
Families come in increasing varieties, so what?

Life / Funeral arrangements for a foreigner in Poland [28]

there is always the budget approach involving duct tape, a length of carpet and a lay-by

perhaps leaving the dearly departed on a park bench to be dealt with by squirrels and passing crows

*chuckling morbidly*
U sick boy..;)

Life / Funeral arrangements for a foreigner in Poland [28]

So that if you did pass away there you could be interred there instead of a big repatriation hassle? Or if you died there would they try to send you home via the embassy etc?

course they would not, do not flatter yourself.
Repatriation of a body is a very expensive business, it would only be done if your family requested and paid for it, otherwise it would be a pauper's cremation for you..;)

I knew an Irish chap who passed away in Bangkok, his family paid over £30,000 for his body to be returned, I couldn't understand the waste of money myself. I mean they could have zipped him in a body bag and put him on a budget flight (jokes) But for a normal family, that kind of cost could ruin them...

Seriously though, that is why organized people have insurance, or as you suggest, make your own arrangements/requests beforehand.

Genealogy / I'm half Polish American, but I'm very Patriotic about my ancestry [47]

If your dad is Irish, so are you. In the eyes of the law. You are an Irish citizen. You dont even need to apply for it. If you are born to an Irish parent, you are, de-facto an Irish citizen.Betcha didnt know that, eh?

no RN, I did not know that, thanks for the info. But I am still just another Brit as far as you lot are concerned, eh?..;)

Poland (and Polish-born people) couldn't care less about people like me anyway - we're just "Angole" to them

right Sid, it's like me with the Irish.....I have an Irish name and immigrant dad, and a certain family vocabulary, but if I went over to Ireland I am just another Brit to them. Which is why I identify with my accent, my mum, my passport, and my place of birth, that is, England.

Spot on post.
Just imagine if every Plastic Pole and Paddy from America came back over.......;D

UK, Ireland / English dad, Polish mum are parting. What about the child? [27]

In theory kids can not be taken outside of the UK without the permission of people who have parental responsibility

key words here are 'in theory'...I have often taken my kids out of the UK and no-one batted an eyelid, despite my ex husband ostensibly having parental responsibilty.

Life / Who's Leaving Poland? [138]

I totally agree with this. This is why, in my opinion, there are so many sick kids in Poland. Their parents and babcia's are afraid of the weather.

it's true there are so many sickly pampered tiny kids, they are not taken out for fresh air if its 'too cold'....in a way from what i have seen it is almost as though the mums 'treasure' the sickliness.

so is it true that you can only name your kid certain names in Poland?
for example if I wanted to call my baby...say...Tallulah....? (hypothetically.;)
and if that is the case, what about immigrants' kids?

OH ok my mistake, I thought it was the 'Austro-Hungarian Empire'. Good old Wiki...;)
But why are you giving this guy a hard time? As Peterweg said, nationality is about language and name (and self identification).
Why does it matter to you if some American guy is getting into his 'roots'.......?

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

really? How is the Island? interesting?

I spent most of my time in the capital, Halkida. It was a good time, with a great seafront for sitting around drinking frappe.
I was there in the winter with only a drunken Scot for company so I got really good at backgammon and finding cheap bars.
The island is very big........with plenty of beaches and places to go....
There's a port where you can take a ferry to some smaller islands....called Kimi I think.

History / Unusual soldier (The bear - named Voytek) [71]

Merged: Wojtek the soldier bear

wojtekfilm.com/large/index.html
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wojtek_(soldier_bear)

I was reading the paper yesterday and there was an article about this wonderful bear who was enlisted into the Polish army and carried munitions at Monte Cassino.

He liked beer and cigarettes and thought he was a soldier.
The whole story is superb.
Has anyone else heard of him?

Life / What is wrong with Poznan? [197]

Look right into the faces of drivers who might be about to go into your lane as if they were total scum. They always stop. A passive aggressive point to the crossing signal works too.

oh so you lived in Brixton? ..;)

aren't all degrees 'bought'? especially these days?
although of course one worries more about this being true of medical degrees than, say, English Literature...;)
To the OP....

what is wrong with Poznan and why doesn’t anything get done about it?

your little 'complaints' make Poznan sound rather similar to London...what's the problem?..;)
