Food / What made in Poland produce would you recommend [110]

Stores in Polish border towns and cities are sieged by shoppers from neighbouring countries. Lithuanians, Belarussians, Ukrainians in the east and Czechs, Slovaks in the south prefer to go shopping in Poland to have good value for money. They buy out everything. In northern city of Białystok shops display notices/ads in Belarussian.

why do polish people (atleast the few that i know) think that all things made polish are better..

They are right. Why should they buy Swiss chocolate if Polish is equally good?

We have already talked about plum in chocolate pralines, now more from Solidarność:

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

In any country with a functioning, independent media the govt would fall.

Not so fast. It is easy to topple a government but what next? You surely know there is no alternative to PO government right now.

And if you want to imply that PiS government would do much better, forget it.

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

The advanced medical services have again become inefficient and scanty at the end of year. I heard about people diagnosed with cancer and sent home without treatment because traditionally state hospitals and clinics run out of money from the state National Health Fund contracts in November/ December due to the poor financing system. What a shame.

Fortunately, I have still been able to keep up good health. How long?

that somebody as eminent as Mr Brzezinsky shares my views about PIS being the useful idots of Moscow.

It is sad but true. PiS led by Kaczyński are able/ready to set fire to Poland and destroy it in order to get power.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

But yes, i mean those with cheap bunkbeds, communal area etc..

If so, yes, you are right, apart from two or three major cities, hostels are pretty non-existent here.

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

My workmate, a teacher of Polish, emigrated to Norway with her husband and son a few months ago. The man works, the child goes to primary school, she learns Norwegian. They rent a flat, bought a car. Pity that Poland lost such intelligent people but I cannot blame her for that decision. Making a living from teaching is getting more and more difficult in Poland.

Also make the gov should make it more viable for young couples to have children before you start to bring in others. Poles are breeding very fast in the UK.

I thought about it many times and arrived at certain conclusion. Later I read the same in an expert`s article. The idea is that no matter how much money is spent on sponsoring people`s procreation in Poland, they will never fulfill the expectations. Developed societies tend to have one child, max. two, per marriage/partnership, that`s all.

Only immigrants can save us.

Boze Swiety ratuj Polske. I hope they change their opinions before Poland becomes Muslim France.

Better Muslim than none, don`t you think so???

Travel / Bus and tram drivers in Poland are hated [4]

Is it possible to hate bus and tram drivers more than I do right now?

In NYC, commuting to or from the uni, I once saw how am elderly lady blocked the door which the bus driver tried to shut. She did it to give enough time for her female friend to run and get on the bus. The driver got pisssed off and started shouting - You have no right to do such shyt on my bus! It is my fekking bus! I am the boss here and decide when to open and close the door!

I was really shocked because it reminded me communist times so much.

What do you think? Was the lady`s act justified or not?

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

But I have purchased some cheap, good imported Polish grape juice from the produce stand also, owned by a Belo Russian.

Because of your patriotism?

The young people and Mr. Romney in the pictures were just a spontaneous reaction on my part about how insane the culture is many times.,,They're all crazy.

I fear I am not sure how to understand it. Did you put those young coloured men together with Romney as representatives of the same culture or are they juxtaposed to each other as contrast?

A few weeks ago Americans, Brits and others celebrated Halloween

Joe, the young man in the first pic is holding a bottle of grape juice drink! I remember it from my stay in US. Shyt, it really tasted like grapes. Yes, I know it was all artificial like Matrix, but nevertheless, I loved it.......

Travel / Traveling around Poland - our photo stories with very personal commentary [225]

As ardent Polish patriots, we didn`t forget about visiting such places as:

Westerplatte, Poland

Out of date plaques - the last defender of Westerplatte died this year.
Souvenirs

Pam, as for outdoors meals when you are in the Old Town, I can recommend you a milk bar in Szeroka Street. It is called Turystyczny (Tourist) Bar, offers excellent Polish dishes, great value for money. We frequented it 3 times and never regreted.

Famous chilled soup - chłodnik litewski.

I devoured potato pancakes ala Hungarian (with rich gravy and large chunks of soft pork) while my kids and wife ordered regular pancakes with cottage cheese and sugar.

or they tried out scrambled eggs (???) and blueberry pierogis.

But it is normal that off-season they are imported, no?

Yes, it is. And that is a good moment to see the difference in taste.

Do you know that Polish diplomats and Euro Parliament members advertise Polish strawberries every summer?

We always try to buy seasonal, that ensures it is local.

Yes!

But chocolate? There are only two countries in the world who produce chocolate....The Swiss and these mad Belgians :).
Poland has way to go in that field :)

:):):):) Who knows?

Well, I tried once or twice Lindt pralines. Yes, they were good, but really nothing special, comparable to products made in Poland by foreign and Polish capital.

PS. Sobieski, I just recalled communist times, late 1970s. We could compare between Polish, Czechoslovakian and Hungarian chocolate. Which one was the tastiest, you think? :):):) I know you know the answer. But if some other members don`t, I can say the Czechoslovakian and Hungarian chocolate was simply inedible. :):):):):)

pawian: The pre-war Polish Post office, famous for its defence on 1 Sept 1939 and execution of Polish workers by Nazi Germans.
I didn't know anything about this Pawian. It's really sad.

No, pam. It isn`t sad today. It was sad when those people gave their life, either during combat or later in hospitals and executions, including the 10 year old daughter of the post office caretaker. It was sad because those people had families who mourned them and also, there were many witnesses of their suffering and pain.

Today, they are all gone. The sad moments turned into glorious history of Poland - thanks to me and other history lovers like me, those heroic people who died for Polish Gdańsk will be immortalised on various pages till the end of this world.

E.g.,

Konrad Guderski (19 February 1900 - 1 September 1939) was a Polish engineer and military officer. He was the organizer and commander of the defense of the Polish Post Office in Danzig in the first hours of the German invasion of Poland, 1939. He was killed during the Defense of the Polish Post Office in Danzig, during the World War II invasion of Poland by Germany

Alfons Flisykowski (22 September 1902, Gorrenschin, Kreis Karthaus, West Prussia, Germany - October 5, 1939, Danzig-Saspe) was a Polish worker of the Polish Post Office in the Free City of Danzig in the years 1923-1939 and a second commander (after Konrad Guderski) of the defence of the Post Office from the invading Nazi German forces when World War II started on September 1, 1939.
Flisykowski was captured by the Germans on 2 September 1939 and handed over to the Gestapo.

More about them in the Museum of the Gdańsk Post Office.

More chocolate i'm afraid......Pasia biscuits are my new addiction. It's impossible to just have one.....

You mean Pasja by Dr Gerard?

Poland candy

drgerard.eu/strona/o-firmie

The main activity of the company Dr Gerard ( until April 2011 functioning under the name Lider'S - KG )
is the production of pastries and chocolate products , which is the result of excellent quality
combination of traditional production of " sweet " products with the most advanced technology
currently available on the market. The company Dr. Gerard is one of the largest and most important
confectionery producers in Poland , whose success is based on very high
quality and a wide range of products.

.. this summer I found some astonishing tomatoes in Poland. Like, tomatoes from Greece. From a hot Mediterranean country. They were amazing. I brought a whole Ryanair cabin bag full of them home. And they didn't cost £1.99 each.

That`s true. Polish fruit and veg are much tastier than foreign stuff. Unfortunately, we still have to buy foreign veg and fruit when it is off season in Poland.

We went to Auchan hypermarket in Krakow. I like it because not only is the choice there the greatest in the city but prices are lowest too.

The ready-made-dish freezer is so tiny. Definitely, a clash of cultures. :):):):)

I am worried i will run out of time........so much to see and do!

Quite probable. But everything is possible if you plan it wisely.

Probably won't have time for the Zoo, i have Museums, castles and monuments to see!

Which castle are you talking about? Malbork?

BTW, don`t forget churches, especially the biggest one which offers a great view.

After the war, a few rows of destroyed houses weren`t rebuilt to make more space in the cramped quarters of the Old Town.

Gdańsk is famous for amber jewellery:

the above statement means that 83% of British women CAN crack the art of cooking".

Yes, that`s right, but still.....
let me remind you and all other guys who mentioned it that the art of cooking isn`t really the subject matter of this discussion. :):):):)

In fact, it is NOT discussed here if British or Polish women CAN or CANNOT cook.

The discussion is about the POPULARITY of home traditional cooking from the scratch.

Which probably means England 1, Poland 0

I am afraid not. :):):)

Dear guys, let me remind you that I didn`t expect to get the info who eats or doesn`t eat typical British breakfast in the UK. I know that it is eaten occassionally.

My question was quite simple:

making sure the chicken breast they are about to eat is really dead by beating it to a pulp with a hammer.

Hey, it is the recipe! Don`t you beat your chicken breast before cooking???

Strange......

Step 1: Chicken
Place a boneless, skinless chicken breast on your cutting board.
Step 2: Plastic Wrap
Get two large pieces of plastic wrap and fold them over to double thickness so that they will cover the breast with room to spare. Remember we are flattening the breast so it will expand.

Step 3: Top and Bottom
Put the breast between the two pieces of wrap and place on cutting board.
Step 4: Hammer Time!
Grab a mallet (if you don't have one use anything with a flat hard surface) and using the flat side pound out the breast to desired thickness. The thinner you pound it the quicker it will cook.

but generally I've found Polish food fairly basic

With such knowledge, sure, you have. :)

No, let`s not. The nature of this thread is generalisation. I write here about general tendencies prevailing in countries. It is obvious that not all people in a country conform to that generalisation but most do.

The same kind of generalisation is taking place in threads about Poland and Poles, and you are also an important contributor there:
Why Manchester rules over Warsaw :)

there are some women that can cook and some that cannot - all around the world.

Yes, some can cook ready made food. :):):):)

thaindian.com/newsportal/health/why-cant-wives-cook-the-mothers-way_100604947.html

London, March 16 (IANS)

According to the men's survey, a mother dishes up hearty traditional meals unlike the smart culinary stuff or quick food favoured by modern-day women. Remarkably, many men point this out to their partners.Mothers rarely serve ready meals, have a wider repertoire of dishes, and always cook something they know their sons like. Wives and girlfriends, on the other hand, are likely to rely on the microwave or oven-ready meals from the freezer because they are strapped for time because of work or child care, it was found.

[...]
London, Nov 27 (IANS) It seems the fast-food or meals-on-the-go lifestyle is steadily overwhelming Britain's lifestyle, with just one in four meals being now cooked at home.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

By accident, I had a look at British breakfast and sth occured to me...

Lightyears ago, I thought that British bacon and Polish boczek are the same - ham-like meat with a lot of white fat.

Boczek Poland

Later I realised that British bacon is in fact Polish bekon, like the one exported to UK by Polish meat producers

Ham-like stuff with a little fat on the side.

But today I can see that fatty stuff rules in English breakfast in a lot of online recipes

Breakfast Poland

What the hell?

But Pawian, you shouldn't believe everything you read! This is the Daily Fail after all.................:):):):)

dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-1382709/One-British-women-struggle-cook-basic-dishes.html
One in six British women struggles to crack the art of cooking, a survey revealed today.
More than half said their husband is a better cook.
The poll of 2,000 men and women commissioned by the Good Food channel found that the typical female can cook only seven dishes from scratch.
More than one in five women struggles with a basic curry, one in six cannot bake a cake and one in ten has never cooked a roast.

One in 20 even messes up boiling an egg or preparing a cooked breakfast.

Comments to the article:
" .... the Good Food channel found that the typical female can cook only seven dishes from scratch." My wife's cuisine can't be bettered. Yummy! I weighed 9 stones when we married six months ago, and now I'm a more manly 18 stones. You can't beat modern home cooking. Here are her seven favourite dishes. Dish 1: Microwaved chicken korma and rice from the supermarket. Dish 2: Oven heated quiche lorraine and oven heatedroast potatoes from the supermarket. Dish 3: Scrambled eggs and oven heated chips. Dish 4: Beans on toast and oven heated chips. Dish 5: Supermarket pizza from the supermarket.

PS. Stop boasting of having all English girls! It is pathetic! :):):):)

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

Romney is hardly ideal but there is no other choice for those who fear an anti-Christian crypto-socialist. Same in Poland.

But we already settled that PiS` economic program is purely socialist. If they got power and fulfilled what they are promising now, Poland would be ruined within 2, 3 years, like Greece.

Fortunately

adn only a fraction of campaign promises ever come true.

Good for Poland! :):):)
