Language / Meaning of git majonez [7]

'git majonez' can mean perfectly alright, fine enough or somewhat better than fine enough

I don't know what actually literally 'git' means or meant (as far as I can tell 'git' or 'gites' was once in the past criminal slang for good, ok, fine or originally perhaps a fine fellow (a criminal one especially serving the sentence)- it then entered colloquial Polish) but majonez is simply 'mayonaise' -

the majonez is added to git just because it sounds handy, funny and interesting :) I smile when I think of 'git majonez' but I have some inclination towards pure nonsense

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

Play the young dutch woman means pretend the ignorant.I told him that and he played the young Dutch woman.Or He played the Chinese. He pretended not to understand.

funnily enough the same thing is expressed in Polish with an expression 'to play a Greek - udawać Greka'

Language / chodźmy vs idźmy? [32]

Same difference as the forms for other verbs: Mówimy po polsku. = We speak Polish
Mówijmy po polsku! = Let's speak Polish!

you should sometimes bite your tounge .. er .. fingers Lyzko ;)

Language / chodźmy vs idźmy? [32]

It may sound more impatient than the regular "chodźmy".

I agree

Travel / Which bus from Poland to London via the Eurotunnel? [27]

My Polish friend Aneta did the coach Polska to UK...she said it was full of drunken Poles singing very loud all the way...

She says she wished she had walked instead....

must have been a nightmare - I traveled quite a bit by coach but was lucky not to have such experiences (I fear drunken people especially in groups)

Travel / Which bus from Poland to London via the Eurotunnel? [27]

look above - I've just edited my previous post

yes - the timetable suggest that they go by ferry but the lady on the infoline told me all their coaches use the tunnel

you can call them too perhaps just to check if they talk English too - if you have problems with the 0 801 number (I can't phone this number cause I have a pre-paid) use the regular line

Travel / Which bus from Poland to London via the Eurotunnel? [27]

I remember once crossing the English channel through the tunnel on a coach trip but can't remember the lines - perhaps check Sindbad - 0 801 22 33 44 or +48 77 443 44 44 - their are pretty big so they can have an option of going through the tunnel

edit: I just phoned them (Sindbad) - all their coaches go through the tunnel (I guess they it's because they are big) - you can even book online

Travel / Motorcycle tour of Poland [137]

paradoxically Poland does not offer much hairpining experience even in the mountains - the best thing I can think of is in Czech Republic close to the Polish border between Jesenik and Sumperk (in the Jeseniki mountains) - there is this mountain pass that the main road traverses and its a long stretch of hairpin turns (it easily takes more than half an hour by bus to cover)

(it easily takes more than half an hour by bus to cover)

or perhaps even a whole hour - can't remember that well

News / How long will it take for the first 9/11 to occur in Poland? [55]

So...its just a silly story somebody put on some site... complete and utter bollox...

well, that can be true unfortunately - I just don't know - but it would be nice to hear from Mr Mandierej or whatever he is called in some serious media just to cast away any doubts

Life / Homosexuality in Polish Culture [231]

News / How long will it take for the first 9/11 to occur in Poland? [55]

Quote

legend:
Did anyone hear that the guy with the video of the crash got killed later on somewhere?

Yeah it was on some nutty website...

But strangely the police in Kiev , where he was supposed to have been murdered knew nothing about it....

and i believe he turned up later..

btw isn't strange that you mention the police of Kiev while he was a witness in Smolensk (two different countries btw) - did he leave Smolensk for Kiev after the catastrophe? and if so why?

Work / Find Job in Poland - How difficult is the law for the foreigner [4]

depending on the area you can perhaps be better off giving private lessons of Spanish - Spanish is the most sought after foreign language in Poland after English and German

you can also try to look for a job in companies that deal with imports/exports from Hispanic countries - these are mostly located in bigger cities

another possibility is trying some multi-national companies - IBM opens an international support center in Wrocław for example - perhaps they still need people

News / Poland blocks carbon targets [11]

An attempt by European Union environment ministers to strengthen EU action to combat climate change was blocked by Poland last night, prompting a swift rebuke from the energy minister Chris Huhne.

"I'm deeply disappointed that the only country in the EU that could not accept a good compromise on how we can move Europe to a low carbon economy was Poland," he said in a statement.

Language / Perfective vs Imperfective - grammar [150]

yes, it is largely so - I cannot think of any exceptions now but I'm pretty sure there are some - appart from verbs and expressions that perfective and imperfective interchange smoothly like in the example Ziemowit has given

News / Germany provoke Poland using Silesian question. Poland's attitude ? [124]

If anything it is more like Czech than German.

there is little if anything Czech in Silesian dialect - Silesian dialect has just it's own peculiarities

However, remember that Poles gave Lithuania a hugely Polish flavour and didn't want to give that up easily

the fact also remains that there are scores of Poles in Lithuania - and still noone sane in Poland wants to reclaim those lands for Poland - now consider the stance of the Vertriebene or whatever they call themselves - ever heard of Germans wanting their property back in Poland and I have heard of instances they actually got it - wonder according to what Polish laws - I have been once to a meeting with Jarosław Kaczyński - he made a speech and also answered questions from the public - in one of the answeres he addressed the issue of reprivatisation - he said we can't have a reprivatisation bill because we would have to give Germans their pre 45 property according to the rules of Strassburg Tribunal of Justice

News / Lithuanian ambassador 'Poles not loyal citizens' [63]

the Communist regime wiped off the face of the earth anyone who calmed to be Polish in the "Litwo! Ojczyzno moja" land....

sorry but you are misguided on the issue - sizeable Polish minority remained in the countryside in Wilno vicinity after the WWII - and it was a conscious decision on the side of the USSR

Language / Why when spelling Polish names abroad, Polish letters are ignored? [68]

It is easier than the Windows version, where you have to memorize the numeric codes.

I know you can enter many signs with Alt + plus a numeric code - you need to switch the NumLock on - but it's pretty cumbersome - there is a small utility for windows that opens a small window with various symbols you can enter almost anywhere

Language / Czech language sounds like baby talk to most Poles. Similarities? [222]

I don't think it was freely open for all locals to cross.

yes- this must be true - I think you needed an invitation to another communist country to enter - my dad worked in Czechoslovakia for some time back in the 80's and also my aunt lives in Ostrava (was married to a Czech guy)

but I think that there wasn't much in the way of Nachod/Kudowa contacts between WWII and 1989 as well

there was not much contact for various reasons - (one was mutual dislike I guess) - but the crossing was not limited access area - I was travelling to Prague as a kid in the middle 80's and Kudowa area was normally accessible so was Nachod area from the Czech side

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

All they said was that GDDKiA delayed until the last moment - according to the contract agreement - of 59 days after receiving their invoice.

they also mention unsufficiently recognized geological conditions which if true can't be a fault of COVEC - and that GDDKiA ignored any complaints from the Chinese about that - I don't think GDDKiA is so very competent - very late payments also tell a thing - it's not that GDDKiA is bursting with cash or perhaps that some machinations were in place to throw the Chinese out of business

Do Polish keyboards have those funny letters right on the keys or do they have to use this procedure too?

as far as I know such keyboards are available (with the diacrytics on the keys) but are not popular - if I wanted to learn to type on that national keyboard I would have to bascially learn to type all those national characters anew (as I use the key combinations to write them)

there was a thread on Polish keyboard layouts some time back here in the forum

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

Responding to Chinese allegations that GDDKiA also did not pay on time and that there were unexpected difficulties in the market.

I don't trust such statements - especially that more companies reflected on the late payments from GDDKiA

Weren't they speaking a local dialect of some sort? This would explain much of your problem. While a dialect of this sort would incorporate both Czech and Polish elements, they would be mixed and matched in a manner totally unfamiliar to you.

not in Nachod Magdalena - all 'mixed' Czech-Polish exist next to the border with Upper Silesia - inhabitants of both sides of the border of Nachod area came there only after the WWII and I would guess they don't speak locally developed dialects

had terrible troubles in a supermarket in Nachod (just 200m from Poland!) trying to communicate with someone working there - and at least for me, it's sad that the people in border areas don't (or won't - I don't know which) speak each other's languages.

btw I had a completely different experience from Jesenik - maybe the lady was from Lach dialect speakin area who knows - I knew nothing of Lach dialects back then - still I wanted to order a meal in a bar - these were 'tasticky' - I tried that in Czech and the lady just asked 'Pan chtiel te pierożki,tak?' :)

not sure - but I would say rural areas around Kraków have their own special way of speaking - I wouldn't say I 'zaciągam' when I speak normally - but sure I can zaciągawszy a little bit - the Kurpian dialect is a zaciągający one

two clarify a thing a bit - my mother's parents came from the area of £omża and they used to speak with Kurpian charasterstics especially grandma - it was cute
