Before i begin: I am not racist or a daily mail reader however i think the polish inflex was to great into are country!

And there's far too many moaning British people who'd rather come here and try and stir a little trouble. If immigration bothers you so much, why don't you start campaigning to the government? Nah, you'd rather come here and moan.

I said somewhere before that the schools and the NHS were stretched before Polish people came here. That's also the fault of the government as they've been steadly closing down schools and hospitals for years.

But the BNP are free to voice their opinion like everyone else and some of their policy makes perfect sense to me.

Which they do and they always put their foot in it, which is why they'll never gain the support they want.

A Polish festival would be better in an already established Polish community. There are areas of the UK with such people.
Wouldn't it be an idea to get in touch with one of these communities.

I think that it would be better to have it out with a Polish community but I do think that getting in touch with some Polish clubs etc would be a good idea, I can see what I can do up here.

Yeah I agree with that. Of course an entry fee would be unavoidable but some freebies once inside would help ;)

I'm actually saying that we or someone on the forum can organize, with help, a new festival.

I could be interesting in getting involved - as a non-Pole in central London who travels to Poland fairly regularly and does business there, and just wants to get more into the culture.

Yes, I could also be interested in setting something up. I quite like the look of the fruit stock festival. It's schedule looks busy and anything that is set up would have to have a full schedule to first make people interested in attending and keeping them going once they get there.

If they do get Polish bands to play here, the level of interest in it would indicate the partial level of interest in something bigger and more Poland specific.

This is the problem. All the organising in the world won't get people through the door. So what will?

PD, are you an event organiser? I think that there could be a niche market for a smaller event or festival, maybe focusing on food and drink etc

No I'm not (my friend is). I agree with you that there is a gap here in the UK for a good Polish festival. Personally I would have music, food with maybe some stalls with homemade art, jewellery. Taste of Polonia in Chicago is a good example of what I mean but obviously anything here would be on a much smaller scale and probably one day would do it.

I really do think that the music and the food would be the big draw.

I'm not sure about it, to be honest... it's a bit of everthing... tourism... business... finance.... culture... property...... medical tourism.....

Yes I wondered about this too. Although, I imagine there will be a chance to try some Polish food and buy Polish jewellery etc. I think there is a lot that could be learned from it.

Although I would say that if you live in the area or would be in the area at the time and considered a holiday to Poland (for exmaple) that you should attend. However, if anyone did go it would be good to hear how opinions on the whole event.

Earls Court is a drafty old place if you don't fill it with people.

True...so I wonder if they already expect it to be busy...

Although, I would like something up here similar to Positively Poland. If it were so easy to organise...

Hopefully they will start to say who has actually paid for any of these pitches. I imagine these things encourage more people to take up stalls if they know it's already going to be worth it - are other interesting things already going to be there? And so on.

Good point. All it really says is there will be exhibits of food, fashion etc, etc. I'll maybe email and see what they say. I reckon food would sell it for me! ;)

I know. It just says sold etc. Maybe something else will be added nearer the time.

if it's no good, there's plenty more to do in that part of the world.

I think it will be good. I meant that it's a much longer journey for me if it's something that will only take half a day to view. I dunno. I'll think about it.

For you, yes. For me, no...although it is over a weekend...I'd like to see it but it might not be worth the journey. It is more of an exhibition than a festival but would probably be OK.

I'm not sure about the Angel of the North. Every time I pass it I wonder what it's all about. It's just a distraction.

A pal of my father served with Wojtek all the way from Iran to demob in Scotland. he has very vivid memories of Wojtek and his daily bath in the river while in Iran. As a child I always thought that it was just a barrack room story........

wozzy (and everyone else :), I wonder if you know anything of the soldiers who served with Wojtek or can link me to a site where I can find out more about the regiment or perhaps give me some contacts of people who served with Wojtek. My friend is trying to write an obituary of someone who served with the bear and who just died recently. Thanks :)

He has a memorial at the Zoo but I am not truly sure what it is. Yes I think if anywhere in Edinburgh, the Zoo would be ideal. He was in Hutton in the borders so there would be another good place for a memorial.

I prefer the idea of a big bear at the border rather than a piper :)

they should have seen yesterday's CNN program about corruption in Africa and their difficult living conditions.

I didn't see it but I know what you mean. Anyone saying Poland is a third world country (particularly here) is only saying it to cause trouble...maybe they should type "third world country" into a search engine and improve their general knowledge a little bit more.

At a guess I would say that people who refer to Poland as a "third world country" have no knowledge of Poland (or wish to), probably don't really like Poland or Polish people and if they have been there, most likely had a bad experience due to the examples I've already written.

They also probably have no knowledge of what a third world country actually is...

If you ignore the senior management and directors (easy done) of the place I work then at least 25% of the workforce is Polish, in varying job roles. And it works just fine :)

It could be that - or some other oddball reason :)

if they were male, and clerks in a tropical fish store AND had to be topless, there should be a law for them to be buff, too.

topless clerks in tropical fish stores... now thats an intersting one, and unlike the other ones it doesnt sound so out dated

but there would be some ridiculous reason why they should be topless - nothing interesting. BTW - the clerks were maybe male ;)

These are amusing and there are loads more. If you have time you should pick a particular city and look into the "by-laws" there are some funny ones there too. :)
