News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

Marcin Bosacki, a spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry, is not denying the facts, but points out that. The Polish government has done a lot over the last year to make the problem of racism and hooliganism disappear from Polish stadiums.

Jumping in to defend ourselves is a natural impulse, but it blurs our vision. If we are able to see our own faults, we can work at eliminating them, instead of taking offense at those who highlight them.

I rest my case!

And how much of the racism did he receive from Polish/Ukrainian fans?

It isn't the point that this is not a problem, or that it exists, it is that based on selective reporting that Campbell can make such a statement.

What point did he say that he'd been racially abused in Poland? Did you watch the interview?

He was interviewed as a recent ex-football who had played club and international football at all levels and had also suffered racial abuse. He was asked to respond to the video and the information that he was given...which however a small select piece of information was however Racist.

To the single Jew given up by an Pole and murdered in one of the death camps...to him there is probably nothing between the two of them. I'm not saying all Poles were implicit in the destruction of the Jews in Poland but some were and in some countries the very fact that you deny this is a criminal offence.

If an international newspaper were to ask the same question to the Polish PM and he denied it, it could be very messy for the Poles in the EU.

Terry has been scrutinised enough in the Press. He has been demoted from the England captaincy and is awaiting a court hearing. (WE IN ENGLAND DO THIS!!).

I'd be surprised if Campbells never been to Poland having played 73 times for his country and in 48 european games. I think he's more of an expert on the effect of racism in football then you or any other Poles will be.

To be honest nobody in the rest of the world care what the Poles think it's a disgrace that the Poles even consider denying it. This story has made over 250 newspapers around the world the day after it appeared on the BBC. the whole of Europe are now aware of how useless the Poles have been at stopping this.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

The worlds most expensive transport system, what do you expect? Average wage in London is about £50K. 275K pln, which compensates somewhat.

Is that a mean average. I lived in London for 6 years and knew probably 1 or 2 people that earned over 35k never mind 50k. Take off the 5% top earners and you'll find a lot of Londoners earning less then 25k...

in 2007 the gross median average income in London was 27k.in 2012 it is 33.9k... the mean average will be far less.

I think I understand what you mean. Then if I'm right about you, you would agree that the Filipinos are equally to blame for the Bataan Death March. Right?

Being equally to blame and being partialy to blame are two seperate matters. I have read hundreds of accounts of Poles driving jews from their homes, giving Jews up to the Germans and so on.. It's funny that Poles always think that they have done no wrong in history...ever!!!

Answer me the following question then..

Why have the 'Polish' Jews (Jews who once lived in Poland - im not making Obama's mistake ;) ) never returned to Poland?
(ok you can undestand communist times..but now with the Polish super economy why arn't they exploiting it?)

Hi Monia....

That's the Polish way....deflect criticism of Poles by questioning what other did! Of course Poles have never done anything wrong ever!!! (...it was somebody else!)

Rybnik... you must be one hell of a blind Pole not to think that some of the Poles had nothing to do with the Extermination of the Jews.

Unlike the one-sided polish history lesson that you got taught we in the west we have a more broader approach to History.

Are you a Jew ? Firstly - Poles not poles and secondly Poles don`t say that, just few ultra Widzew or Wisła Kraków supporters !!!!!!!

No i'm not a jew but what difference does it make if i am or not? - A few ultras standing shouting in football stadiums with the police and stewards turning a blind-eye.

If you think Poles arn't racist then go back under the rock where you have obviously crawled from under.

This 'black' guy happened to be an ex England footballer who has played the game in all levels for clubs like England, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. This 'black' guy obviously knows what he is talking about having suffered from racial abuse in his past.

I think the Poles and the Ukrainians have done absolutely nothing to stamp out these idiots. I suspect the lack of action has more to do with the general view of Poles.

The very fact that an Englishman commented on football crime/the lack of safety in Poland and the BBC running a hack job on this IMMEDIATELY makes relevant anything similar, as bad or worse that happens in the UK. IM-ME-DI-ATE-LY..

This is about Euro 2012 and the threat from Neo nazi extremist's and football hooligans. What has the olympics got to do with that? The last time there was a violence associated with the Olympics was in Munich and that was how many years ago?

Nojas
The UK government has stepped up security to an unbelievable level in order that it will go off without any trouble. Whereas, the Poles have taken EU money to stage this and have done nothing to prevent these idiots from disrupting the tournament. Get online and try to find any stories regarding football violence in EURO 96, you may find isolated incidents but that's it.

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/special_report/1998/hooligans/60451.stm

independent.co.uk/sport/euro-96-books-reveal-record-profit-of-pounds-69m-1358058.html

Am I the only one thinking this will be a non-issue? Yes, there probably will be riots. It's European football, there's ALWAYS riots. And it is also likely that it will be the usual suspects like every tournament (Euro/WC) played in Europe: England-Germany-Poland. I think it will be a great summer and a great tournament. Mind you that most of the hools you see on domestic matches, won't be seen on the national ones. Especially pricy Euro-matches.

Because hooligans on a whole don't work? can't afford 120zl for a match? can't travel to the city to look for random fans to 'have a go at' (JUDE RAUS!! as the poles say)

As of today, 12 zł/kg in my neck of woods.
But I think in a week it will be 6-8 zł.

Again!! another mistake.... glass houses, stones!!!

Strawberries are plural, Strawberry is singular. So you should say 'they will be 6-8zl'

Western Europeans still have hooligans too, they just dont fight near the stadium and under the glare of CCTV.

Out of sight, out of mind.

The UK after China has the most CCTV camera's... police can follow practically anybody's movement around any city centre and beyond... In the UK hooligan's can't hide. The thing is that the UK addressed the problem of racism at football and hooligans (the so called english disease) 20 years ago. There was a big push after Heysel and the subsequent banning of teams from european competiton. It's amazing that only the English FA have ever been 'blanket banned' and all other nations including Poland seem to get away with it 'scott free'.

If Poland addressed the problem you would see an increase in crowd numbers, football tourism (nobody comes to poland to watch league football from abroad) and better football.

Polish people saying 'it happens in the rest of Europe' and 'riots in London' are just excusing the Neo-Nazi behaviour.

p.s. 1995!!! 17 years ago! Landsdown road....is that the best you can do!

I honestly think that Obama has more to worry about then 'over-sensitive' Polish people. You all know what he meant when he said 'Polish camps' stop making an issue of it... the war was 70 years ago... get over it!!!!

In the great scheme of things if he annoys a few poles so what!

Let's not forget also that the USA has a very large number of Polish people (most of whom are not Jewish anyway). They do have the vote, you know!

I cant imagine every American with a Polish ancestor (approx 3% 10million and some are jewish!! ) voting against him. Get real. A lot of these people won't even care about Poland. It's like saying that if he said something wrong (a mistake or misinformed) about the UK then 40,000,000 british americans would vote to kick him out!

Poles outside of poland don't hold the balance of power to do anything...get over it! Your a small country in Europe...not very rich or powerful.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

Hi Gustav

Poland has a higher percentage of prisoners then the UK. The UK's numbers are usually made up from repeat offenders. The problem in the UK is not the criminals its the fact that the autorities are too soft on sentencing and the fact that the Police forces account for every crime sometimes 2 or 3 times on the figures to make their detection rates seem better.

Take also into account the amount of crime commited by immigrants which Poland hardly suffers from. If you have time can you pull out the figures for Poles in prison in the uk and also the stories of the flights bringing polish criminals back to poland. I think you'll be surprised. Poland is not only exporting it's cheap labour to the UK but also it's criminal element.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

is there a comment to accompany this ?

Peter. It's about time you stopped listening to the smiling polish economists who invite you to shirt and tie functions in Poland in order to gleam selected facts and figures to show how fantastically well the Polish economy is doing. Economists are like Politicians and Enviromentalists. They all have an agenda and all make money from Gerrymandering the figures. If the Polish press/government gave and idea of the true situation in Poland then their would be riots on the streets.

From now on ask the 'real' polish people who are 'living' in Poland what the reality is...

Falling unemployment is due to mass emmigration on a whole and nothing else.

The number of people in work in Poland has hardly fallen as the GDP has been 'dramatically' rising take a look at the Employment rate.....

15-64 year old in employment
1997 58.9%,
2011 59.7% a massive rise of 0.8%!

(so 0.8% of 30million is 240K people and you have to remember that it will be less then this as it's only the 15-64 year old range...so probably at most 200,000k extra jobs). So with a minimum wage of less then gbp300 per month and the perceived mass investment in Poland this is hardly an indicator of a highly successful economy.

When you compare these figure with UK (with a decrease of GDP and a recession and companies leaving for cheaper production) 1999 71% and 2011 69.5% a drop of 1.1% (although with mass immigration there are probably more people employed)

as a futher example here are how some of the old eastern bloc countries fare against poland....

slovenia 58.1 to 59.5 (up 1.4%)
estonia 61.5 to 65.1 (up 3.6%)
bulgaria 50.4 to 58.5% (up 8.1%)
eu member states (27) 61.8 to 64.3% (up 2.5%)

Therefore as an economist what can you gleam from the fact that the Polish economy in the past 20 years has seen a lower rise in Employment then it's other neighbours?

You should never look at the unemployment figure as a representation of how well an economy is doing. As you well know goverments tend to 'massage' figures for their own means.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

The problem with the BBC is that they push a 'champagne' socialist ideal and political correctness hard down the throats of the UK and are now trying to do the same witht he Poles. There may be Racism here but the Poles will deal with it their own way. Why don't the BBC just do one. I remember the 1970's an sitcoms like 'love thy neighbour' 'mind you language' and alf garnett. These things wouldn't be allowed in the UK now but to be honest if you watch them they are quite 'anti' racist...alf garnett for example was made to look the fool, as was the white guy in love thy neighbour. In the UK it's gone too far with ethnic minorities being given preferential treatment with jobs (public sector) and housing. This is were the problem lies... a breeding ground for facism! if you look at extreme socialism and extreme fascism there isn't much difference (look at hitler and stalism...egotistical mass murderers)

It's not racism thats the problem it's respect for each other..

Jon

The problem with Facists (these people arn't racist they hate everybody of every race) is that the more advertising you give them the more they thrive on it. Ignore them and they will go away. If in the 1920's and 1930's nobody gave the Nazi's attention how different would the world have been.

There is Racism in one form or another in all countries. Do you think Blacks arn't racist? Go to Derby and watch how the blacks and the indians hate each other. The difference between the UK and Poland is... in the UK we have been brainwashed (right or wrong) into a 'political correct' bubble and have every one of our moves filmed by a CCTV society. In Poland they turn a blind eye!
