Travel / Ryanair travel by air - subtle scams to be wary of [98]

You tend to get what you pay for in the airline world. The main reason I won't touch Ryanair is because they carry very little spare fuel. When you've been held in as many holding patterns as I have, this matters more than the lack of free food.

Travel / Has anyone used OLT Express yet? [8]

Inspired by WB's Ryanair thread lol. They fly a few routes I would definitely use. Has anyone used them yet? Any good?

Travel / Ryanair travel by air - subtle scams to be wary of [98]

I've only flown with three low-cost airlines; none of them were particularly good experiences, and I won't do it again. One missed a landing (never heard so many screams), another kept us on board for 3 hours (to fill the seats with an incoming flight), and of course there is Ryanair's in-your face advertising (although this was in the days when you really could fly WRO-STN for £30, so it was worth it). I fly quite a lot, and I always manage to find good prices with LOT/BA/bmi etc. I have to take checked baggage, so full-service carriers work out better for me. Slightly off-topic: anyone know why I keep having this recurring nightmare... BA OneWorld 747 crashes vertically (nose up) soon after take-off, flying east-west from the "north" runway at LHR? :(

News / Will EURO 2012 be a proud moment for Poland and its people or set back Poland 20 years? [86]

Surely a PiS-loving paper would be posting "TUSK TO BLAME : 10% OF VISITORS WON'T COME BACK" ;)

lol :) But what you know what the usual suspects are like on here ;)

So far, so good I'd say. The ones who are objecting are, as usual, either moronic hooligans who couldn't afford tickets anyway or the usual PiS voting suspects.

Agreed. I've had a love-hate relationship with football for many years, but I think I've come back a fan :0

Or came over thinking that Polish women would be begging for foreign men, but couldn't find one, despite being foreign :D

Go back to England if you don't like it. You never post anything positive about Poland, so why you waste your time on here is beyond me.

Back on topic...

Well, after spending a most of the past week in Poland, I can happily ignore the (cough) "impartial" UK media's biased opinion of Poland. Not that I ever thought it would be any different, but still.

Take Krakow on Friday, for example: hundreds, if not thousands, of people in football shirts - not just Polish, but German, Russian, English, Irish, Dutch, Ukrainian, Czech, German, and probably a few others I forgot about. Groups wandering about in their respective shirts, some noisier than others (the English, naturally - especially the Newcastle fans lol)... but NO TROUBLE whatsoever. Can you imagine that happening in an English city?

Or Warsaw yesterday: lots of groups of non-whites (many, many more than usual) standing or wandering around, clearly there for football... yet they seemed happy and enjoying the atmosphere. In fact, I probably looked more worried, but that's because I know Warsaw pretty well (lol).

I also read a report in one of yesterday's Polish papers which suggested that over 80% of Euro 2012 visitors would return to Poland, and over 90% would recommend Poland as a holiday destination (I await the inevitable "lol which PiS-loving paper did you read that in?" insult, but I'm ready for it :p ). Unlike the UK, it's unlikely that anyone in Poland would attempt to divide the responses upon racial lines, but it tells you something that the BBC will never tell you - despite all this allegedly widespread racism/anti-Semitism/whatever, it hasn't put many Euro 2012 visitors off returning the country.

Clearly, the tournament has been good for Poland, and looks like it may be very good for future Polish tourism as well. And if you object to this, because you don't feel that Poland "deserves" this boost to its tourism sector, then you're welcome to take your holidays in Lagos or Port Moresby instead.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

that's a very old borrowing, in case you were interested. probably pre-WW2.

In the sense which refers to środki zabronione w sporcie, I agree - I've known about this usage for decades. But it's only a few years since I came across the other meaning, so I thought it was a more recent usage. I seem to have come across it much more often in the media recently (and not just during Euro 2012 either). I was not aware that this meaning was also very old! lol

Noticed in this week's Euro 2012-obsessed media: w foodzonie, w fanboxie, and the increasingly- popular doping/dopingowac (etc). I love this language :D

News / British senior politician compares Poland to South Africa during apartheid [129]

Seriously... a Labour politician claiming that another country, one with virtually no visible minorities, has Apartheid-like conditions? If anyone has increased the prevalence of "Apartheid-like" conditions in the UK, it's the last Labour government. Remember that this was the government which deliberately increased immigration for political reasons - I'm not going to add links, but the evidence is easily found online. Poland has no non-white "ghettos", whereas the UK has plenty. I've lived in several areas where whites are a small minority, and you don't stay long there if you have a choice.

Before the usual group of expats to Poland start ganging-up on anyone Polish who dares to express a reasoned pro-Polish opinion, I'll state that I do NOT agree with the abuse which certain footballers have experienced. Even if it wasn't considered racist, what kind of person makes "monkey noises" towards other people anyway? That's the kind of thing a seven year-old would find funny. It's like "Beavis and Butthead" humour - "huh huh huh, she said horn", etc. - funny when you're a child, puerile when you're an adult.

Everyone who has commented on the football-related thread has failed to understand the UK media's underlying agenda here - which is that prejudice towards Poles is the acceptable face of racism in the UK. This has grown during the past eight years, as Polish immigration increased. Yet there is never any criticism of continued immigration from Third World countries, which is still far higher than Polish immigration to the UK.

Whenever there are reports of Pakistani Muslim crime against whites of any ethnicity, they simply avoid any ethnic/religious terms, or use the inadequate catch-all term "Asian" - which is an insult to the Chinese/Indian/Vietnamese/Filipino/Japanese etc communities in the UK, who rarely pose any problems. Likewise, when a white person or group is the victim of an "Afro-Caribbean" gang, they dare not even use the catch-all term "black". The race of the criminal should be irrelevant, but there have been plenty of crimes committed in this country where white ethnic groups have been targeted by non-whites, but these are always reposted differently to crimes committed by whites against non-whites - they always add vague terms like "the police are at this time unsure whether this was a hate crime, but investigations are continuing" - which is not used when the roles are reversed. Although it's also true to say that the biggest threat to blacks are black men, but the media dare not state facts like this, as it's easier to blame "whitey" for black gunmen who murder their own.

Any major city in the UK has more race-related problems than the whole of Poland, yet Poles and Poland are yet again seen as pariahs in the UK media.

Yet whenever there is any report of crime/wrongdoing by European immigrants from Slavic/Baltic countries, they don't even use (admittedly incorrect) terms like "Eastern European", it's always reported as "Polish/Lithuanian/Estonian/Slovak etc <insert name of crime here>". I work in a very PC environment, yet blatant prejudice towards Polish workers (and towards me, when they learn of my surname) has increased since 2004. There is NO WAY this would be allowed towards non-Europeans, so no-one can claim that there isn't an accepted underlying agenda here.

Any major city in the UK has more race-related problems than the whole of Poland has, yet Poles and Poland are yet again seen as pariahs by the UK media. We're sick of the hypocrisy of UK politicians and journalists - get your own house in order first, before lecturing other countries on how to deal with their own problems!

Life / Best Polish production TV show [12]

If you like detective/crime shows "Ojciec Mateusz" is good.

And Kryminalni

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kryminalni

I still wish that they had made more series, but they probably ended it at its peak (which is the best way to go).
I have the whole series on DVD, fortunately.

Something for everyone who likes cop/crime drama - gun-totin' cops, SWAT teams, car chases, evil gangsters who look like Warsaw cabbies, unusual and bizarre crimes, hot Polish women (including the kind of Polish women a lot of PF members love to hate, lol), and shows a side of Poland which the average visitor will never see. It's a Polish "CSI", I suppose.

But I have no taste in TV anyway (I watch stuff like "Ukryta Prawda" and "Sędzia Anna Maria Wesołowska" ffs lol) so I'll leave it up to you, haha.

Travel / No warnings to soccer fans going to Euro 2012 about Polish drivers and Polish roads? [40]

Krakow next week NO football. Maybe no matches in Krak I think you will be shocked at the numbers of fans staying in the city.

Well, as it's only costing me 10% of the price of a stay in Warszawa, I think I can deal with a few English idiots ;)

However, considering the huge number of rooms still available, I don't think I'll be too "shocked" - I know what to expect from certain English visitors to Krakow, anyway.

Travel / No warnings to soccer fans going to Euro 2012 about Polish drivers and Polish roads? [40]

hmmm, never yet met a confrontational Polish driver.

I have. Unfortunately, I'm related to one. :0

An uncle once picked me up from Radom railway station, and it was only about two minutes after we had left the station that he launched into a fist-waving, minute-long tirade of the usual Polish expletives (and a lot more), just because someone had got a bit too close to his car. He would be lucky to survive if he had tried that sort of thing round here!

He's so laid-back at home, too :)

You should come up to Warmia-Mazury, No football in Olsztyn, but some bloody good local beers.

This is why I'll be in Krakow all next week - no football to spoil my holiday :)

History / Why WERE Those Death Camps Built in Poland, Then? [47]

Lots of Jews in Poland = Kill them in Poland

Indeed.

I can imagine asking this question in a local ghetto (it's forbidden to ask such questions in UK schools, apparently) and getting a "maybe it's cuz dere wuz loads of Jews in Poland

innit?" response.

You would think that this was obvious even to the stupidest of Twitter-obsessed school-leavers.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

holy mackerel. almost as bad as "trollowanie".

Indeed.

I'm not sure what's worse - European Polglish like "peelingi" or U.S Polish like "golumpkies" :D

My mum's pretty bad at it, but I'm taking a stand for real Polish, and refuse to use these kind of words, whenever possible :)

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

Poland is still waiting for more speed cameras, cameras at junctions to stop the red light jumpers.More speed bumps and road traffic cops who do their job effectively.

You're welcome to ours, we're fed up of these cash cows. Councils round here have plenty of money for speed humps, but no money for fixing pot holes! Driving in Salford is like driving in Beirut.

If a sandwich shop is unlikely to be the next best thing in Poland,(outside of Warsaw) then maybe services such as mobile hairdressers, nail technicians might be an option.

You can't move for kosmetyka/fryzjerstwo/peelingi signs round here, I'm surprised it's not big over there already. Or maybe it's because they're all over here? lol

UK, Ireland / Where do Poles in London go to watch football games? [9]

The Falcon, Battersea - it was my local for a number of years.

Unlike many of the pubs in the area, it's not a dodgy "estate pub" or full of upper middle class Nathan Barley types. The back room has sport on, but I can't remember how big the screen is (I'm not into sport anyway). Went in there a couple of months ago, and it's still a decent pub. I'm sure there are several other pubs in the area with big screens if it's not quite your scene, though.

Love / It is more fun to have sex in Polish than in English. Discuss. [27]

French is all twirls and slightly too-thin men, with garlic under their manicured finger nails.

Shame that you had to spoil a hilarious thread with such generalisations, but there is an element of truth in this (as in all generalisations - Pawian take note :p ) :)

Am I alone in this?
(well, obviously not ; ) ... but in this slipping into another language and finding that less exposed, somehow, than sex in one's own language?

I can't really say, not when it comes to Polish, anyway. To me, Polish is like an extension of English (or vice versa), so it's not foreign as such. But if I think of nations with hot women, I don't really think of how "hot" the language sounds.

For me, it's more about accents, or the tone of a voice - and that doesn't necessarily cross national boundaries.

So I would never, ever need Sildenafil with women from (white) South Africa, Spain, Italy, Newcastle or Lancashire (particularly north of the M60. Yonner girl fetish!? lmao). I could tell you a few tales about girls from Bury or Padiham, but I won't, because you don't deserve it. Besides, this is a family forum ;) lol

Whereas I would need a CRATELOAD of little blue pills if she comes from the south-west, Liverpool, Ireland, the USA or Australia. :0 Nothing against the people (apart from whingeing Aussies of course) it's just the accents. Each to their own, I guess.

Surprisingly, Polish accents do nothing for me, either. If she's Polish, I want her to speak Polish - which is great :)

Life / Relocating to Wroclaw, any suggestions? [15]

Currently not having much success getting any landlords to reply to my emails when I tell them I'm from England

This is typical of Poland, unfortunately. When dealing with everyone from estate agents to airlines, I've never had a response by email (writing in Polish makes no difference). The only way which works is to actually phone them up or turn up at the office. It's the Polish way. They will learn eventually, though - they will have to or lose business.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

The last time I looked (not long ago) the average wage was about £33K in London (i.e. nowhere near £50K), and about £25K outside the capital. When I last lived in London, I earned about £38K p.a., but that included unsocial hours payments. Most people I knew earned around the same, or even more. But London is full of people earning a lot less than £25K a year.

on what scale?

this entire thread is useless without comparing wages to earnings.

Which was my point above :)

When I'm in Poland, I rarely stay in hotels, so I have to do "proper" shopping, and do not live on restaurant/takeaway food.

While there is a significant difference in prices on many items, it's simply not enough to compensate for the difference in wages. And, as we all know, the prices of many goods (e.g. electricals) are almost identical. I do a fairly normal job, but one which is now at degree-level upon qualification. Yet I earn quite a good wage over here, but would NOT earn a good wage in Poland.

.but if you want to buy plane tickets.....who the hell would want to be earning PLN. In Poland I'd have to blow an entire month's salary in order to fly home and back.....now, I can book the same flight for maybe 6-7 days worth of work.

Same here. I only need to work for about two days to afford a return flight to Poland (with LOT or BA), but if I worked in Poland, in the same job, I would need to work for two weeks to afford the same return flight to the UK and back to Poland. Which is exactly why I would not move there! Only those running businesses, or working on "expat" terms and conditions, can really say that Poland is an affordable place to work and live in.

damn! Poles be "lovin' it" all day long!

They will be getting fat all day long, too! lol

Not sure if it counts as a "service", but I've visited many parts of Poland, and nowhere seems to have anything resembling London's Camden Lock or Manchester's Northern Quarter. The dominant camo pants/backpack/shaved hair image will hopefully become unfashionable with time, so there is still hope :)

Compared to Poland, there's some parallels. So much of Poland's income comes from food production and light engineering however the wealth flows into Warsaw.

Very true.

Thats because the SE of England is the most heavily subsidised part of Britain much more so than Scotland or Wales.

Indeed.

While we made all the real money for the country by spinning cotton, Southerners still whine about how they have to subsidise the North. :)

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries

lol, a typically cliched and uninformed PF response, from someone who is probably Russian anyway (which explains why you conveniently fail to mention crime rates in places like Moscow).

It's no surprise that a thread mentioning criticism of Poland, quickly turns into a UK-bashing thread. Are you going to start going on about "Zionists" in a minute as well? It's up to post #15 already - some anti-Semitism is long overdue ;)

If you seriously think that the UK has more crime than SA, then I suggest you go wandering around Johannesburg after the offices have all closed, or take a drive into a nearby township. Then come and do the same in a UK city. I live in one of the highest-crime areas of the UK (my car tax would cost 60% less in London, because there is so much car crime round here, and the media loves to call us "Gunchester", lol), yet absolutely nothing happens round here - it's one of the safest areas I've ever lived in! Unless you could count a bit of verbal abuse from Polish drunks outside the row of Jewish shops around the corner, but that hardly constitutes major crime, does it?

It's not a fair comparison, and not strictly accurate. That fare is for cash payments - using an Oyster card, it only costs £2.00.

It's also possible to catch a bus in London for £1.30.

I earn six times as much as I would in Poland, so those "expensive" British fares would be much more affordable than Polish fares.

Come to think of it, I can't think of anything which is genuinely cheaper in Poland (if you consider local wages).

Oddly enough, it costs £2.70 for a bus fare round here - more expensive than London, but we have much lower wages!! <grr>
