Food / Podpiwek, anyone? [4]

It tastes like a very light beer--the same way as we used to buy used whiskey barrels and make "swish"--watered down booze.

Travel / Fish and Chips in Warsaw [53]

England is best known for it's "fish and chips". The British consumed nearly 300 million servings of fish and chips and that equates to six servings for every man, woman and child in the country. There are now around 8,500 fish and chip shops across the UK - that’s eight for every one McDonald’s outlet, making British Fish and Chips the nation's favourite take-away. wow!!!!So much for Mac's competing in England

Food / Looking for recipe for Murzynek layer cake [6]

Here ya go---enjoy!!!!!

This is a dark, chocolaty cake, filled with a delicious vodka and cherry cream.

This recipe comes from my Polish wife. If I can say one thing about Polish food, it’s that the recipes aren’t simple, but trust me, this one is worth it; it’s easier to make then it looks. We’ve divided this one into 3 steps.

Murzynek Recipe – Ingredients – STAGE ONE

» 250g Vegetable Shortening (such as Stork)
» 150g White Sugar
» 150ml Water
» 6 heaped Teaspoons Cocoa Powder
» 600g Plain Flour
» 2 level tsp Baking Powder
» 3 Eggs
» 1 tbsp Blackcurrant Jam
» 1 packet Flaked Almonds, for decoration
» 2 Handfulls of Cherries
» Vodka
Murzynek Recipe – Method – STAGE ONE

1.Start by placing cherries in Vodka (enough to cover) – we’ll come back to them later
2.Heat Shortening gently until melted
3.Add sugar, water and cocoa, and mix well
4.Heat gently until simmering; remove from heat, and stir well continuously until cool.
5.Transfer to mixing bowl.
6.Add flour, baking soda, eggs, and jam. Mix well.
7.Place inside greased/lined cake tin
8.Bake for 40 minutes at 180 degrees c. Check before removing; probe centre with wooden cocktail stick, and if still wet, cook for a little longer.
Meanwhile, you will be preparing vodka cream for the filling…

Murzynek Recipe – Ingredients – STAGE TWO

» 125g Unsalted Butter
» 150g Caster Sugar
» 1 Egg (Whole)
» 1 Egg Yolk
» 50ml Vodka
Murzynek Recipe – Ingredients – STAGE TWO

1.Cream butter with sugar with a hand mixer. Add to this the eggs, and mix again, then add vodka, mixing one more time.
2.Place mixture in fridge for approximately 20 minutes
3.Take your (cooled!) cake and cut in half – 2 frisbee shaped slices
4.Spread cream over bottom slice of cake evenly
5.Dot cherries evenly into the cream
6.Place top slice onto bottom one – your cake is now whole again
All of which will lead into the chocolate topping…

Murzynek Recipe – Ingredients – STAGE THREE

» 125g Unsalted Butter
» 5 Heaped tbsp Sugar
» 1 tbsp Water
» 4 tsp Cocoa Powder
Murzynek Recipe – Ingredients – STAGE THREE

1.Heat butter until almost melted
2.Add other ingredients, and stir – fast.
3.When all ingredients are combined and starting to bubble, remove from heat. Stir continuously, for approximately 10 minutes (the longer the better).
4.Pour onto centre of cake, spreading with pallet knife.
5.Place almond slices evenly on the still soft chocolate until cake is covered.
You’re done! Allow to cool, and enjoy a slice with a cup of freshly ground coffee. Enjoy!

Food / OKOCIM PORTER BETTER THAN GUINNESS STOUT? [43]

Did you know the easiest way to spot one of those guys in a pub is to look around and find who's drinking a Corona with a slice of lemon in the neck.

Food / OKOCIM PORTER BETTER THAN GUINNESS STOUT? [43]

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed - Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

Food / OKOCIM PORTER BETTER THAN GUINNESS STOUT? [43]

Between the two beers ,I think the Okocim Porter beats the Stout by just a little !------here is my experience comparing the two. First, the beer was deep chestnut brown, and thick with it, almost as opaque as Guinness Extra Stout. Next, the smell was rich with dark, ripe, pit-fruit: plums, prunes. Finally, when I took a sip, it was like sunrise of a dark star: my mouth filled with malt power and twisting skeins of those rich prune notes, sweet as pastry but not tooth-aching like candy, a mellow pillow of powerful sensation. There was a strong thread of anise through the beer that lasted right through the finish, taking the cloying edge off quite nicely

Then slit it's neck and colleted the blood into a frying pan and then beat some eggs and cooked it, It had a brain like look------mmmmmmmmmTasty!!!!!!

Food / Why is it that some Polish people refuse to eat anything that is not Polish? [120]

My favorite breakfast was bread dipped into the fat from the pan of a roasted goose, with pickled eggs on the side and washed down by several pints of dark beer. My mother would fix a goose at least once a month and save the drippings for her, and as a result, I'm not that big a fan of roast goose. You'd think it was hideously unhealthy but I was one of the slimmest people in the family. If eating really, really greasy turkey drippings is your thing, it wouldn't be too bad. Just be sure and leave the window open when you hit the bathroom.

I would say it's a combination of both-------read on
WARSAW, Poland - A Benedictine nun is facing jail for driving a tractor into a car while drunk outside her convent in southwestern Poland, police said Friday.

The 45-year-old nun will be charged with drunk-driving and causing an accident, which carries a prison sentence of up to two years, Dariusz Waluch, police spokesman in the southwestern Polish town of Dzierzoniow, told the local news agency PAP.

He said the nun was 17 times over the country’s legal alcohol limit for driving

Food / Is carp indigenous to Israel? [39]

The threat of carp in the great lakes is real----latest news of of what is being done:

Environmental officials in Illinois plan to dump a toxic chemical into a stretch of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal hoping to keep Lake Michigan safe from a species of massive and voracious fish called Asian carp. The fish, which can grow to 4 feet long and weigh 100 pounds, are known for their ability to leap up to 8 feet out of the water as motor boats speed by, injuring fishermen. Scientists fear that the fish, which can eat the equivalent of 40 percent of their body weight every day, could damage the ecosystem of the Great Lakes, which is the largest body of fresh water in the world.

Food / WHAT DID YOU EAT FOR POLISH EASTER TODAY? [45]

Yup----So the story goes like this-----------
When the Germans Settlers, known as Mennonites, or Amish, had settled in Dutch Country, Pennsylvania, in the 1700's, they had introduced their Easter traditions into the American Culture. Oschter Haws, was one of the greatest and most fun traditions for children. The children waited all year long for the Oschter Haws to come, and lay coloured eggs in their nest, so they were especially good behaved children, for fear he might not come.
