Life / Why in Poland most people use cloth sponge to wipe off windscreen? [23]

Probably in case the handbrake or other brake slips and the car rolls forward, or a child or unlicensed driver or thief tries to jump in and drive off,

No, law doesn`t regulate such things....

and because of the pollution build up.

Yes, that`s the main reason - pollution and noise which disturbs other residents in the vicinity. 15 years ago I kept my parked car running in the street 3 meters from certain lady`s window and she looked out and shouted at me. And she was right, but I was young and stupid so I shouted back. Today I regret it.

UK, Ireland / Why are Brits so left-wing? [60]

You`re welcome. How about this theory?:

British society is still divided into social classes which tend to keep to themselves. Lower and middle class are probably left-oriented to balance the power of the upper classes which hold real control of the country. On the other hand, upper classes pretend to be left to pacify the classes below and keep them self-complacent.

Hence, one can get an impression that most Brits are left oriented.

You forgot about guns

(e.g. If you don't want guns in your society, that's fine with me but don't tell me, what's good for me/us over here, this is all I'm saying).

That`s better.

They also like to hook car keys out through the letterbox flap in the front door of many British houses with a long stick or rod

Hard to believe.

(notice I didn't say with a long pole!)

hahaha Yes, you are a very well-behaved young man. :):):)

If you start your car up and leave it isnt it then your tough luck if someone jumps in and drives it off?

No, come on, it never occured to me. Poland is a safe country.

And lols at defending a barmy, over nannying dictatorial traffic law by claiming the Germans also have it.......yeah lols.

What? Don`t you really know why and also refuse to think, like smurf??? :):):):):)

I thought you were wiser than that. I must have been mistaken. :):):):):):)

Also, insurers tend to protest if your car is stolen with the keys in the ignition while you are not in the driving seat.

Of course, it is natural.

Language / Correct way to say the date in Polish? [4]

This first is better.
The other is more often used for talking about past events e.g., The January Uprising broke on .............

And it also could do with a slight improvement

b) dwudziestego drugiego stycznia dwa tysiące trzynaście

trzynastego.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

but its over 14 in some cities

Yes, true, but in towns and countryside it must be less.

BTW, did they take brutto or net earnings when talking about Ireland? Which is more popular system of counting it?

Love / Woman 23, man 47 years old. What do you think about ? [162]

You shouldn`t brag about it in public. People tend to be awfully envious of someone else`s happiness and they might try to destroy your beautiful love. E.g., they will tell her that you have other female partners on the side. Or even male partners to discourage her more.

Be careful, protect your relationship.

Of course, all members of PF wish you both all the best. May you have many children and grandchildren.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

The answer he gets is 'no' , highlighting the first of many clashes of culture! For those that aren't aware, 'no' in Polish doesn't mean 'no' as an English person would understand it!

First of all "no" wouldn't be use in such situation. A person who would say "no" for the request of a daughter's hand must have been highly unarticulate...

In theory, such a situation is possible that a reserved uneducated Pole may reply no meaning yeah or OK to his wannabe son-on-law.

Pawian, try this: 1/3 vodka, 1/3 blue curacao, 1/3 orange juice, slice of orange, ice. What color would it be, then? Serve it to your wife, she'll love you for that!!! :-)

Thank you very much but my wife doesn`t drink. Her brotehr, either. Some inborn genetical deficiency, I suppose.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

In Ireland, a house or apartment now costs 14 × an ordinary adult yearly wage to own

Another interesting thing. How many yearly salaries does a flat cost in Poland now???

I am sure it is less than 14.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

and many people also need to understand that Polish real estate is an enigma. It doesn't follow the rules of the rest of the world....otherwise it would have exploded by now.

Almost nothing in Poland follows the rules of the rest of the world. We are one and only.

Totally

Don`t be silly. You brought English teachers into this thread, not me.
Btw, do you have any education at all? Your English is alarmingly bad for a native speaker.

LOL, what a construction....

Yes, I didn`t notice it at first but really, the guy drops amazing errors.

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

But there is no bubble. The prices have been slowly decreasing. Which, by definition, is not a bubble. A property bubble is defined as a sharp increase followed by a massive drop, kind of like jumping off a cliff.

Don`t be so meticulous about the words. Bubble or not, the fact is that prices have gone down by 30% since 2007.

September was the seventeenth consecutive month when the real estate in Poland got cheaper . Taking into account inflation, housing prices are almost a third lower than five years ago - the portal domy.pl.

Housing prices go back further lows. Domy.pl value calculated by the Housing Price Index declined 17th time in a row . It was 13.8 percent . lower than in September 2007 . Last , a slight price increase took place in April 2011 . The value of that index rose 2.1 points then oo .

Noteworthy is the value of the index price trend adjusted for inflation . It was lower by 32 percent . than in September 2007.

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

ny way if you think starbucks coffee is expensive BTW its only 6.90 pln for a tall cup and 2 pln for refill

Yes, of course, it is cheap, but still too expensive for the crap they sell, that`s the common opinion about Starbucks. They blend the cheapest stuff and sell it as quality stuff.

2 pln for refill in a new papercup

You never cease mentioning that refill! Refill, refill for 2 zlotys!!! :):):)

Why? Are you obsessed or what?:):):):)

I love there 2 pln refills

:):):):)

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

the current property boom is a bubble- this bubble will burst, investors- beware! do your research, This is a wise advice so that is why I am passing on

Indeed. You predicted it well. Prices have gone down. People who took out loans in 2007 to buy their flats/houses are complaining about the drop of the real estate value.
