UK, Ireland / Bath City offers 80% discount to Polish people [18]

It's a great idea - trying to include Polish newcomers in the local community.

Even better if Polonia Warszawa gives a discount to British people :-)

Language / Polish word "Dom" and its similarities in different languages [46]

I gave a simple possible derivation of "dam" from a Turkic word/verb.

Possible but not probable. It comes from Proto-IndoEuropean, far older than the Turkic languagest. It may have passed into the Turkic family through transference from Anatolian, Tocharian Armenian or Indo-Iranian.

Love / In 2009 nearly 4000 Poles married a foreigner [170]

taking a white woman from a white man (not necessarily his girl, might be a daughter or sister) his taking his most cherished possession.

Do you really think a woman is a "possession"?

Travel / Visiting Poland in May - what should I bring? [28]

Cholula hot sauce

Sounds great. Don't forget Mexican chocolate or other sweets, if you can get them. They will go down very well. Forget chewing gum - every shop sells seveal brands and flavours.

All researches approve that interracial/mixed ethnicity children are better formed, fitter and more intelligent. Inter breeding creates the best results.

Very true. And with links to more than one culture, heritage and (ideally) language, which can only be good.

Language / Polish word "Dom" and its similarities in different languages [46]

However, I don't see any relation of these to the root "dom" in "house" meaning.

There isn't. No connection at all. the do in domagać is a prefix.

Dom.....Domicile....Ive no classical education but sounds latin to me.

And this is right. Before Latin, from IndoEuropean roots. Not Turkic.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Pretty basic. I knew this when I was 3 years old.

Which was probably about ten years ago. Many of us here have lived in Poland longer than that.

You are not a Pole, you are a transatlantic troll who would be slapped down the minute he arrived in Warsaw. If you can even get in without a tourist visa.

I am 24.

Says a lot. Maybe even true.

I am Polish.

This however is not. You are an American who has visited Europe once. Not a Pole.

I never lived in Poland but I visited once.

hahahahaha

A back seat driver if ever there was one.

How old are you, by the way?

OK, you didn't answer the question about how many years you've lived in Poland, so we can safely assume you've never lived in Poland.

An easier question. How many times have you been to Poland?

after WW1

Not exactly yesterday.

This is the basis for Polonia. A Pole in America is still a Pole.

No. They are Americans. I suspect you'd have real problems adjusting to Poland if you ever lived here. You have lived here, I assume?

not Poles.

Exactly, they're Americans. However the ones who can't get on in life get obsessed with their ancestry because it's easier for them to deal with than reality.

Law / Question on allegro.pl. Have I actually paid? [5]

Yes. You need to make a bank transfer or another form of payment. Allegro.pl has a function whereby you can contact the seller. You need to ask for his or her bank details.

Life / Are there aliens already in Poland? What do Polish people think about extraterrestrials? [34]

I think we do, I have seen the photos of the radiation from the edge of the universe.

So distant! String theory is one of the oddest things - how our 4 dimensions are bound to something called the M-brane (which apparently is black - how do they know?) and gravitons are the dead tips of something from outside. Hawking is right, the Universe is not only stranger than we know, but stranger than we can know...

The Jelenia Góra incident
alfredolissoni.net/pol3.htm

I was reading a while ago about the Kardashev scale, and the Omega Point, the moment in time when life (so far ahead we can't talk about humans) have got to know everything that can be known and done everything that can be done. What happens then? And if time is relative, isn't it already there?

How come Polish are not into Aliens? Everyone else seems to be.

There's always the Jelenia Góra incident...

Seriously, the odds of any alien species being at a similar enough evolutionary level that they could communicate with us, much less have anything to say, is smaller than winning the lottery if you only buy one ticket in your life then put it through the washing machine.

Language / Free Polish Lessons On-line, looking for websites? [14]

Lesson to remember: People are not dumb.

Exactly. One person having a 'conversation' with themself to promote a business like glossa which sounds increasingly dodgy!!

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

is warsaw better than krakow? are the people there accepting towards foreigners?

Krakow has a lot of visiting tourists. People also say it's a bit of a closed city - you can live there for years and not really be accepted as a local. Warsaw is very cosmopolitan. Krakow's OK, but I prefer Warsaw.

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

yes, night clubs! when i said polish/ eastern european girls that offer themselfs for money. it wasnt just red light districts i was describing. you get approached by these women in all the night clubs there.

These probably aren't typical of women in Poland. Why not come to Warsaw? You'll meet a different class of Polka!

Language / Polish Language classes - what do your lessons look like? [21]

I know what you mean - I have the same if I write in Polish. The grammar may be OK, but a Polish person wouldn't neccessarily say it the same way! It doesn't mean it's a mistake - just transference from one way of speaking to another.
