News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

and I believe we need a Senate - it often had to block really terribly written bills

It's nothing more than a rubber stamp doing the lower houses' bidding (it's not fulfilling its function as a house of review), it should be gone-besides the actual chamber looks awful.

you are very wrong on this - in the past the Senate would often amend drawbacks and idiocies in the law that passed through the Sejm

. I wonder what it is going to take for people to wake up? Perhaps if they find that almost every business in Poland is run by Germans and they are just cheap workers. Perhaps if Putin or Medvedev openly says he cannot stand our country. I dunno.

a very real financial kick in their backs will awake them and it's coming - not that they will learn much from it

News / Poland Elections oct 2011/your feed back about RP Janusz Palikot? Poland is changing! [106]

the major thing is Polish state is really paying into the RCC (and to a lesser extent other churches) - I don't think Jarosław Kaczyński and most PiS politicians really think it is the way it should be so - but they will defend it not to alienate a big part of their electorate - PO will not target this church funding in the coming time untill the next elections - they will most probably have to raise taxes - create the tax on real estate based on its market value (podatek katastralny) but they won't target the money paid to the RCC (mainly in the form of financing religion classes in schools)

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

I guess US Polonia were bombarded by PiS slogans and didn't live here when they were in power.

Polonia are not bombarded with PiS slogans - why? - because there is noone to bombard them with PiS slogans (isn't it obvious) - if anything they perpetuate any PiS slogans themselves -

Seanus you're going to pay for the Tusk indebting this nation, for Tusk pat-me-on-my-back European policies (because Poles will love me if you just pat me on my back) - you may be well unaware of the fact but you will financially feel the 'miracles' of the Tusk rule - and you will regret that you haven't warned people around enough about the 'beneficiencies' of it

I guess US Polonia were bombarded by PiS slogans and didn't live here when they were in power.

what was so terrible living here under PiS Seanus - bombarding with negative comments from media? - would you agree that the media are for some reason hostile to PiS? - so why blame PiS for negative media hypes (inflating things out of proportion) - or was there actually some other thing that affected many people personally including yourself - WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG with the PiS staying in power???

i want to see a reduction in the number of MP's and maybe the abolition of the senate

You do seriously believe PO holding all the major offices would actually support that ? Are you 3 years old ? You both are clueless about real politics.

well, actually the abolition of the Senate can well be a major issue in the next elections - not because it is that important for Poland - just another helpful media created distraction

until the time of the next elections the Senate issue will not be raised by the PO

and I believe we need a Senate - it often had to block really terribly written bills

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

Once again the American Polonia has shown it has a better grasp of what is good for Poland. Their Old Country brethren, mesmerised as they are by PO's clever political marketing, image-mongering and glib rhetoric, have once again fallen prey to slippery, tricky Don & Co.

the difference is Polonia are not subjected to the media brain washing here - there was no Palikot 2 months ago - then suddenly 1 month ago someone decided to give him a big push and the media and polls all suddenly were very favourable to him - to say those who vote for Palikot are gullible is not to say enough

Travel / Krakow November! [16]

Could anyone tell me what the chances are of it snowing in krakow at the end of november/start of december?

last year the end of November was a thourough winter time in Poland (with temperatures falling below -20 celsius in the night and lots of snow)

such conditions are however fairly unusual - still the weather can be very unpleasant even if there is just snowfall and around zero degrees with snow melting - the humidity and the snowmelt cause a serious cooling factor (which is not present in the dried conditions of frost below -10)

I would have voted PiS If NP hadn't register their list in my area and I feel much more sympathy for PiS than for PO, PiS would at least try to do something for this country, PO doesn't bother at all.

I'll tell you something Grześ - imagine now that PO + Palikot + SLD could now change the constitution (including writing the whole of the Charts of Rights and Freedoms from the Lisbon Treaty into the new constitution) - imagine that PiS had not the blocking power (I still don't know if they do) to stop them - now I can imagine you are not an avid supporter of the Lisbon treaty and the Charter especially - imagine PiS not having the blocking power because even though there are people who oppose such things they voted for NP and PJN and deprived thus PiS from having a power to block a constituion change - isn't then your vote lost and your personal failure ??

there will be time for voting for parties like PJN and NP - but it's not now - now it's time to stop the flood to have a too much impact - our constitution isn't so bad so it's worth to defend it

Language / pisać-pisanie, jeść-jedzenie, what is the rule for jeść to jedzenie? [9]

Thanks, yes they are nouns but I would like to know how to change the verb jeść into a noun jedzenie, what is the rule?

I found another verb also, spaść that that I would like to turn into a noun. Hopefully the rule will be similiar to jeść to jedzenie.

catsoldier - the irregularity comes from the history of the language (i.e. it is an etymological one)

jeść come from a verb root that looked like ed- (you see the root in edible which is a Latin loanword into English and equally is to eat a developement of the 'ed' verb root)

j is called a prosthetic consonant here (early Slavs didn't like ther words to start with 'e' for some reason)

so you got (j)ed-ti (that experienced contractions) - the form with -edz - is still retained in conjugation forms Oni jedzą. Oni jedli.

about promises.. in 2008, Kaczynski "promised" to leave the scene if his party doesn't win the 2011 elections...

in 2008 there were many personalities in PiS - Grażyna Gęsicka, Mrs Natali-Świat, Zbigniew Wasserman, Janusz Wojciechowski, Zbigniew Wasserman, Paweł Kowal, Paweł Poncyliusz, Michał Kamiński - now these people are gone -

if you say promise your mom pgtx that you fetch her and you go to the mountains for a week and then your car gets stolen and what you got is only a company vehicle that you should not use for your private things that much are you still bound by the promise

If you think that PiS would be a better partner to difuse future tensions with Germany, you are hopelessly wrong. :):):)

it's not about difusing tensions - if one side is bent to have it their way there's not much room for compromise - then it is about fighting for your interests - if you rely on patting by your 'European partners' in your politics how are you going to win anything from them (appart for some symbolic gestures)

One of the most accurate comments I have read online:

Poles chose boring stability over fascinating unpredictability.

this stability is a very illusionary and actually delusional - this is a 'stability' with a price tag that is full of zeroes before the point. we will all see this in the coming 2-3 years - we will see how is actually Germany friendly to Poland and how it really cares for Polish interests in Europe - if someone can't see that we're on the collision course with German policies for the coming time he will be enlighted with the events to unfold (if he/she can't be enlighted by the development so far)

We can observe how rats can swim and board different ships easily ;))

actually all the rats that were prone to leaving the ship of PiS have already done so before - but they have mostly made a grave mistake in fighting with PiS and personally Kaczyński and unless they ended up in PO they are rather without hope for survival in the politics

Bulgaria and Romania voted PO!

hahha - wow - it's saying that Polish diplomatic corps is voting for the hands that feeds them - yeah, you should really be enthusiastic about this - I'll tell you something pawian - consider sometimes what poeple are those people who are eligible for vote in America - these are the people that this country Poland has actually spat out - they have enough energy and intellect to make a living and probably run a business in America - they most probably couldn't find ways to use that energy in Poland - think about it

=Grzegorz_]I voted JKM's party, like always... 1.1%... unfortunately people are too stupid...

Nope, quite the opposite. Polish people are wise and resistant to lunatics.

Polish people can't think for themselves - they just vote for what TV tells them to - see Janusz Palikot case

you need more time to process the American votes - and people want to know what is the outcome right after the election - that's way the voting is held earlier in far away places (add the time difference factor - the polls there should be open more or less as long as in Poland herself - and it's obvious you have to let them vote a day before the voting day in Poland)

Life / Mosquitoes in Poland [40]

hiv doesn't live outside the human body.

if a mosquito bites you sucks some body fluids and then is somehow chased off (it is quite rare thing indeed) it can carry some virus - I think it is still pretty difficult for the virus to return into the sucking mechanism of a mosquito so it could possibly be injected into another person in case another person is targeted within minutes

Life / Mosquitoes in Poland [40]

@GrzegorzK

there are small pools of water around after thaws every spring these can depending on the amount of thawed snow and the subsequent weather either dry up already in spring as early as end of April (in southern Poland) or they can actually retain water for the whole summer (which means lots and lots of bloddy mosquitos) - a hot spring can mean mosquitos as early as the first half of may

this summer was very humid in Poland - this meant plenty of mosquitos generation after generation - and again if you think mosquitos are bad there are worse things (but only locally - I happen to live in a place these worse things breed in the bogs) :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceratopogonidae
pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuczmany
(the only positive side about these little buggers is they tend not to enter homes - but if you want to do anything outside after 7-8 pm forget it - they will eat you alive - oh fortuanately they tend to appear in waves during the warmer months - mostly 2 waves late May-June and then August - sometimes there is only one significant wave)

nd again if you think mosquitos are bad there are worse things (but only locally - I happen to live in a place these worse things breed in the bogs)

they are called midges, aren't they

News / Tusk wants to privatize PKP Cargo. [38]

Tusk wants to privatize PKP Cargo, which is the second largest railway cargo operator in EU, for EUR 400 million. The potential buyers are DB Schenker and Rossiyskie zheleznye dorogi. Please comment. Thank you.

they will sell everything - and it still won't save us from ending up like Greece - corrupt governments are like that (if someone says it was not corruption that drowned Greece just tell him to knock himself on the head a couple of times)

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

cash flow

I have never heard anybody use thin in a Polish conversation or on the TV - maybe they use it in their professional environments - but this one is clearly over the top as there are Polish words and terms to describe these things

the other examples that you have given have all been accepted into Polish for the lack of short handy words to describe such notions and phenomena in Polish simply - well some do have sensible POlish counterparts like 'szorty' (krótkie spodenki in Polish) but these are often much more cumbersome

...so what do we have here? One technical borrowing "hard drive" and two "fun" words - cool and trendy. Wow - some invasion, huh?

again, I have never heard a Polish person use the 'hard drive' term in a Polish conversation- 'dysk twardy' is equally easy to say and write - and it gets yet simplified into colloquial 'twardziel'

'cool' is not actually so cool in Polish - it simply is too short to transfer any emotional emphasis - it's only kids who grow up on internet FPP games and MTV who would use it - mostly for the deficit of Polish vocabulary - these kids will even perhaps start using such English words as 'fun' - but these will still be looked down by even most of their peers

The Polish energy industry has to be modernised anyway. So, what is your point abiut climate agreements?

and you replace it with what? - wind farms? solar panels? geothermy? - in a matter of 3 years? - my guess is those presumed to be unsuitable for further operation in 2015 will still have to be kept running - because even building a gas fired power plant takes a couple of years - and I am not completely sure now it is economical in Polish condition (compared to coal generated power - not taking into consideration those idiotic CO2 limits - the whole 'global warming' issue is very dubious to me - lots of doubts and definite beneficiaries of the imposed policies
